Throughout time, the rainbow has had many differ- ent interpretations. In mythology a rainbow was at times the bow with which deities fought storm de- mons. At other times it was a bridge between heaven and earth. In Christianity the seven rays of a rainbow are likened to the Holy Spirit ' s seven gifts. Four of the rays represent the nature of man ' s perfection — body, mind, soul and spirit, and three rays, red, yellow and blue represent the nature of Trinity. Red signifies highest heaven, the full perception of the Lord ' s love; blue represents middle heaven, delight of receiving wisdom from the Lord; green symbolizes the lowest heaven, love o f good but obscure perception of truth. Among the Hebrews, the rainbow symbolized bless- ings, God ' s covenant, pardon, rebirth, reconciliation and truth. A rainbow represents many things for many people. For some it represents the end of trouble, the dawn of a new and better time. For others it is hope. It is the promise of peace and contentment. And still for oth- ers, the rainbow represents compromise with its syn- thesis of colors. And perhaps unfortunately for a few, the rainbow represents the unattainable. It becomes a deceptive illusion. Hence, the rainbow with all its different meanings and representations has been and is a colorful arch of promise. The various divisions of the book naturally iend themselves to the attributes of the rainbow. With each section in artwork and copy we have attempted to tie the triumphs and failures and the special memories of the year 1985 to the rainbow ' s promise of wisdom, hope, beauty and joy. It is in the rainbow ' s spirit that we dedicated this edition of the Ingot to the senior class of 1985.
