Students Display Royalty At King And Queen Dance The Junior High King and Queen Dance was held on Friday, February 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It has become a traditional event for the junior high, given by the Student Council and Miss Kubiak, Student Council sponsor. Four cou- ples are nominated from each grade. All junior high students then cast ballots in class for the candidates of their choice. The winners of the voting are announced at the dance. Jeff Muha and Donna Collins were crowned 7th grade King and Queen, and Tim Armes and Tina Bartley were crowned 8th grade King and Queen. Art Guel and Lydia Bristol were crowned King and Queen for the first crowning in sever- al years. Couples enjoyed the music of Midwest Express and a special appearance by Ricky Val- lejo, singing tunes by Elvis Presley. The tables were decorated with stars and balloons to help carry the theme “Stairway to the Stars.” The refreshments served were tuna sandwiches, cookies and punch. Keepsakes for the couples were glasses, napkins and a booklet. Pictures were taken by Spasoff photography. This page clockwise: Paula Christakis and Rod- ney Thompson enjoy each others company. The couples dance to the music. u The Wassail, a program of medieval Christmas traditions, was presented by the choral depart- ment under the direction of Mr. Brown. The din- ner has been held annually for more than a dec- ade. Each presentation of the Wassail seems to outshine the previous performance bringing new dances, new costumes, and revived stories of the days of chivalry. The Wassail has evolved into more than just a dinner complimented by song and dance. It is an awaited event in the community. It is the one event which truly gives meaning to the words “Merry Christmas”. This page, clockwise from left: D. Morton and D. Barnes lead the dancers in a medieval dance. G. Vallejo lights one of a hundred candles which adorn the Christmas tree. P. Christakis enter- tained guests during dinner with her flute. M. Carter, S. Groover, N. Schumacher, and M. Ondo wait patiently while their guests finish their din- ner. Opposite page, clockwise from top: Elabo- rate costumes and props add to the production of the Wassail. Mr. Brown uses care in serving the enormous array of luscious desserts. The wench- es treat the guests to a song. Alumnus G. Reed returned to do a juggling act. A. Wright and R. Vallejo perform banner waving. W. Frank and L. Lawson bring the dessert course. V. Baker dem- onstrates a magic rope trick to Mr. Tallman. Oklahoma! The Choral Department presented the musical “OKLAHOMA” which ran for seven nights and one matinee. The cast was plagued with many mishaps. The original “Laurey” had to be ad- mitted to the hospital and had to give her part up. Rick “Curly” Vallejo also had to be admitted to the hospital. He was able to keep his part, but missed a number of important practices. Kelly “Ado Annie” McKinney suffered sickness and was unable to attend many practices. In spite of the mishaps, the play had a successful run. Clockwise from top, page 12: Rick “Curly” Val- lejo tries to convince Robert “Judd” Wait not to take Laurey to the dance. Ricky Vallejo , Jeff Freeman Wed Lydia Flores , Tina Lunghofer The Mock Wedding Becomes Tradition For Family Living The fifth consecutive Mock Wedding was held in the Ingot Room on Wednesday, December 7th at 6:30 p.m. Unlike past weddings which were officiated by local ministers, senior Jimmy Dai- ley performed the ceremonial rites. The wedding was a project of the Family Liv- ing class. Each student was assigned certain as- pects of the wedding preparation for which to be responsible. The majority of the student’s grade was based upon a required wedding notebook. The process of being chosen for the wedding was different than in previous years. Each per- son who wanted to be in the wedding placed his name in a hat. Mrs. Wilson then withdrew names for the various positions available. Bridal Boutique, King Tux and Stephans don- ated dresses and tuxedos. Gerties Florist donat- ed the flowers for the wedding. Two of the dress- es from Bridal Boutique were donated to the school. The reception was held in the Ingot Room im- mediately after the wedding. Ricky Vallejo brought his stereo and acted as D.J. The students brought food and refreshments for the reception. Sloppy joes, deviled eggs, homemade tomales, taco salad and potatoe salad were some of the dishes. Students could attend the reception by invitation only. Each Family Living student was allowed to invite one quest. Above: The wedding party included Michaelene Burton, Dave Bruns, Betty Osborne, Groom Ricky Vallejo and Bride Lydia Flores, Groom Jeff Freeman and Bride Tina Lunghofer, Frank Spear, Michelle Duffee, Ken Collmar and Mary Self. SENIOR CLASS POEM by STEPHANIE NELSON As the long awaited moment of our lives approaches, We find ourselves greeting each new day with mixed feelings. Elation and fear of the dawn of a new life as adults, Emptiness at thoughts of leaving old friends behind, And hope for all the tomorrows to come. We will use that hope to achieve our goals And strive to be the best we can be. We pray that we have learned from our mistakes And, with God’s blessing, will be contented with what life has to offer. With the computer becoming a way of life in business, industry, and the market place, it was necessary for students to be trained in its use. Two important changes took place to help meet this need. A three week computer lit- eracy unit became a requirement for the seventh and eighth grades, and a computer programming class was introduced for high school students. In team aspects the department offers sports such as soccer, volleyball, football, bas- ketball, and softball. For those more interested in poise and grace, along with strength, there are aerobics, gymnastics, tumbling, and folk and square dancing. For students who excel in an individual activity there is the challenge of arch- ery, self-defense, badminton, wrestling, track and field, and tennis. The eighth grade team finished their season 3- 11. Coach Whiting said the players worked very hard and showed a lot of potential. Coach Whit- ing also said that the team had problems with freethrow shooting and that the team was inex- perienced having only seven out of thirteen players returning from the year before. Angel Cruz lead the team with an average of 11.8 points per game. He also excelled in passing and re- bounding ability. Rich Fasel showed great po- tential toward the end of the season, said Coach Whiting, who added that he got better as he got more confidence. Phil Pfautz and Anthony Hill took first. Ray Palmer and Steve Crum took second, and Greg Tenorio took third. Five wrestlers also earned regional berths, however, of the five only Greg Tenorio earned any honor by taking forth place. Another highlight for the grapplers was their defeat of Lake Station. This was the first time in five years that the varsity squad defeated the Eagles. The Jr. High wrestling team’s record ended 1-2. This was also the first year for morning prac- tices. Tourney was the highlight of the season. Although the Ingots lost two in close matches, Coach Rieck said the team played their best ever. The J.V. team ended their season 1-19. Coach Rieck said that this team had the largest fresh- men roster since she started coaching. Fresh- men players composed approximately fifty per- cent of the J.V. squad. Several matches that should have been won were lost. However, said Coach Hilla, the girls did show improvement with each game that they played. He also said, “three or four run- ners ran in fifth position throughout the year because nobody was aggressive enough to take the fifth position.” He added that it was not that the students didn’t try, it’s just that the runners had limited potential, and that the team had a lack of depth. Burleson said that next year the team should be go od because they will not lose many run- ners. “If our runners return and if we pick up some freshmen, we’ll be o.k.” he said. After losing to Crown Point 5-0, and Calumet 4-1, the Ingots won their next four matches. R.F. shut out both Gary Roosevelt and Han- over Central and then defeated Lowell 3-2 and M.C. Marquette 4-1. The team suffered four straight shut outs in their next matches against Hobart, Edison, Por- tage, and Highland in the sectionals. Coach Oury said that the team finished the best that they could and won every match that they possibly could have won. The team was considerably larger this year than in the past.
