Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1961 volume:

Foreword We, the 1961 Ingot Staff, hope that this yearbook will be a true book of fond memories. In years to come we feel that this annual will become one of your most precious possessions. This book represents the Senior’s four years at River Forest High School. EST HIGH SCHOOL I. ADMINISTRATIONS II. FACULTY III. SENIORS IV. JUNIORS V. SOPHOMORES VI. FRESHMEN VII. ORGANIZATIONS VIII. ATHLETICS IX. ACTIVITIES X. ADVERTISEMENTS 3 Joe Magarac, symbol of Strength and Unity in River Forest High School, pre- sents a copy of the INGOT to Mr. Edward B. Weisse, Principal. The future classes of River Forest will have something to aim for during their school years. A high standard of scholastic achievement that will be the target of on-coming classes at River Forest has been made through determined effort and keen competition found among members of the Class of ’61. This high scholastic honor attained by hard work will reward the graduating class with dignity during adult life. Also will come the satisfaction from knowing that a tradition for excel- lence was set. Tradition of high scholastic achievement will help guide the school to the destiny of excellence that has always been its goal. High school memories will last for a life time — memories of club activities, ball games, classes, teachers and classmates will linger long after graduation. As the class leaves the school and journeys through life, the fraternity of classmates will be shared with joy during announcements of achievement or of honor which will come to members of this class. The school has given a solid foundation on which to build a life. The Alma Mater expects the best from all of its graduates — each one is to build a useful and productive life upon the foundation molded at River Forest. The Class of ’61 will always be a part of River Forest and wherever they go, River Forest will be a part of this class. Ingot Staff Left to right, first row: Eleanor Regal, Editor-in-Chief; Mr. M. E. The 1960 cross country squad did an outstanding job in spirit and wins. After a slow r start of four defeats dealt by: Lew Vi allace, Chesterton, 6th ranked Calumet, and state-champs Hobart, the Ingots came fighting back to comprise a string of ten straight victories ; ending the season with a record of 10 wins and 4 losses. The Season was high-lighted by the team defeating every school in the Calumet Con- ference, and also by the record breaking performances of Randy Remus, George Semerau, and Bob Shirey, each breaking the school record. At the end of the sea- son. Randy Remus finally held the record with a respectable time of 10:24. Things are looking up for the future, with only two lettermen leaving via graduation Bob Kolczak and Capt. Dennis Oldaker. The team was coached by Mr. Bill Logan. Sept. 15 Calumet 17 R. The River Forest High School football team stepped onto the field for their first varsity opener, and one of the highlights of the season. This game broke the ice of a 19 game losing streak, and gave the Ingots the first win in their football history. They defeated the Blue Jays of North Judson 12-6. The team played a nine game season, winning one and losing eight. Although they only had one win the season was very successful in the sense that the team played a better brand of game than in previous years. Student enthusiasm was also very encouraging. The season was also highlighted by the crowning of the Queen at the Ingots first annual homecoming game. This game was lost to Chesterton, 20-6. The team played their final game against Culver Military Academy. This was not only the last game of the 1960 season but is was the last touch of a high school football for the graduating seniors. The team this year was led by co-captains A1 Kasper and Tildon Beasley. It was coached by: Head coach A1 Bromberg, and Asst, coaches John Newton and Don Gear. 90 ha I960 RECORD River Forest 12 North Judson 6 River Forest 13 Merriville _ 20 River Forest 7 Morocco 13 River Forest 0 Baugo Twp. — 21 River Forest 12 Thornton Fr. 27 River Forest 6 Chesterton 20 River Forest 6 East Gary 19 River Forest 12 Calumet Twp. 13 River Forest 7 Culver M. The River Forest Ingots began their 1960-1961 basketball season with four return- ing lettermen and were destined to improve their record of the previous season when they won five games. However, the tough luck that plagued them the entire season hit early when Bob Peters a regular last year reported for practice with a badly sprained ankle sustained during the football season. After sitting out the first few games, Bob reported and played several games. It wasn’t long though before Bob re-injured his ankle and it had to be placed in a cast. That ended his high school playing career. Larry Baxter was out for several games with a serious virus; Wayne West w r as hos- pitalized in a freak accident. Even our high scorer, Willard Brown, played the last half-dozen games with a badly sprained ankle. Though our record isn’t very impressive, Coach Zalas nevertheless thought that this was a good ball club lacking only a little extra scoring punch to help Brown who carried the load game after game. John Uryski was always a steady performer. Only 5’11”, John had to mix it up with the six foot plus men under the basket and and determination, we could see Ron Tucker become a real tough boy. Lewis Sink at a forward spot and gave a good account of themselves. With a little more fight and determination, we could see Ron Tucker become a real though boy. Lewis Sink steadied our back court group and on occasion showed flashes of greatness with adept dribbling, faking, and passing. Sink’s highest single game w ' as 17 points which means that he can also score. Mike Lara and Wayne West are two sophomore who shared a back court job. Both had enjoyed success while on the “B” team and when elevated to the Varsity, continued to play well. Both are quick and aggressive and can also score.
