That is the idea we were promoting when we all had an X-ray for that dreaded disease, tuberculosis. It caused quite a commotion in the library, but the examination was very important to everyone. Warm weather means spring and spring means the Junior-Sen- lor banquet and prom As you walked down the hall all you heard was Oh lm getting nerv ous already What color is your formal? Then came the awaited night We all consumed the excellent food that the tumors had prepared for us Our usual speaker Mr Dawson could not be present, but Mr Campbell pre sented a fine speech entitled Had den Values With the banquet over everybody scattered off to prepare for the next exciting part of the evening Ted Pechacek and his date Ethel Newberg, reigned over a very crowded gym decor ated to the tune of April Show ers An orchestra from Elmwood provided some very fine music for the dance The next Monday morning was spent in discussing the happenings of that great night such things as what time you got home Sunday morning where you went, etc As usual when school began last fall the air was filled with rumors of new uniforms for the band This year however, it was no rumor Just after Christmas all the band members were measured for the long needed and awaited suits They arrived lust before contest time On April 26 the band resplendent in the new and hearsol concert for the P TA The next few days were spent in proc tucing for the contest on May 7 Did you know that some of our future farmers are very good singers? Yes we have a quartet composed of Kenneth Ames Bob Ames Bruce Meents and Bernell Adams accompanied by Marilyn Stone They will even travel to the state contest to demonstrate their talent The senior class play has been chosen, and practice has already started on A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court . Once again, Mrs. Fuka will spend most of her time with the cast to make the play a success. Characters in the play include the following: Hank, Tom Anderson, his mother, Phyllis Anding, Marion, his sister, Audrey Placep King Arthur, Bob Jensen Queen Guenever, Carol Doffnng Clarence, Duck Laramy, Elaine, Peggy Smith Sandy Kath leen Matzek, Merlin, Marcus Hag estad, Sogramor, Arthur John son, Launcelot Dick Chtnnock, Morgan Le Fay Ruth Foster, maids, Joan Shield and Donna Jones Jerry Baird and Jim Boles are the stage directors The seniors have decided on the color of the gowns they will wear on graduation Blue has been selected for both boys and gurs This will be the last year of school for many of the seniors Once again, another class will be thrust into the world to shift for themselves Some will choose a higher education while others will go right to work to earn a living Whatever the path we will all meet many obstacles and be mode to face many trials and trnbula tions Since no one can tell us what the future holds for us, we will have to do our best and then we may succeed fWrutten by Dorothy Kvapill Page Nineteen Sponsored by Curlys Eats I ' ll Il - 1 , . I G - IT CAN HAPPEN TO US lOraganal orataon wratten by Ruth Foster Presented at League, Dastract and State con tests! More and more attentaon as beang gaven to the problem of gavanq youth adequate anstruc taon an dravanq l am qoanq to gave you some faqures and facts that emphasaze thas need Nearly half of the persons over saxteen years of aqe an the Unated States are dravers of motor vehacles today and the number as growanq rapadly The much too hagh annual to tals of traffac accadents and vaolataons are proof that all too many faal at tames to be skallful competent dravers Yet a qreat many use and enaoy thear cars year after year wath out accadents or other traffac troubles Stall others are an capable of clravanq an automo bale wathout havanq an acca dent The storaes an the news papers and on the radao about accadents that occur daaly are testamonaals to thas fact There are many traqac accounts each day There as the story of Davad a hagh school senaor on has way to a basketball qame Lake most teen aqers wath cars he had has falled wath has fraends As they went speedanq down the street Davad dad not see the truck slade out of the sade street And another evenanq that beqan so happaly ended an traqedy Perhaps you have already heard the story of Paul younq man who wall always have a dark shadow hanqanq over has lafe The realazataon that he has kalled a chald wall never be forqotten Pcaul was speedang to school one morn ang and faaled to see the chald dart out after her dog There was a heart rendanq scream followed by salence, and then the sudden stark realuzataon that tragedy was at hand Better traananq and qood drav anq habats could have averted thas accadent We hear storaes lake thes every day but we treat them all wath the calm andafference that suqqests we are confadent an accadent wall never happen to us or anyone we know Then one day at does Several weeks aqo I was shocked to learn of lust such an accadent unvolvanq two of my fraends These two qarls were leavang for a party an a cty about tharty maes away The father of one lake all qood fathers warned them to be careful Jean thedauqh ter answered wath the stock but empty reply that ot course theyd be careful From that moment her fathers words never entered her mand aqaan untal several hours later when Jeans fraend lcay an the road d ad lmaqane af you can the sorrow and anquash that accompanaed the news of thas traqedy a home where the only dauqh ter has lust b en kalled Now Jean as an a hospatal tryanq to recover as dreadful to see her lyanq there her formerly actave body helpless Jean and her fraend were once happy an thear be laef that accadents always hap pen to someone else There care many accidents each year that are not fatal but the larqest percentaqe that are occur an the haqh school age qroup Nane percent of all Pacture the sorrow an e us of her Ieqs accadents anvolvanq dravers un der eaghteen years of aqe are fatal whale only one percent are fatal an the forty to forty fave year aqe qroup There care many reasons for thas haqh percentage but the most m portant one as lack of com petent anstructaon Every year one and one half mallaon peo ple qraduate from haqh school and an fave years seventy fave percent of these younq people wall own or have complete ac cess to an automobale Each year many of these are qettanq hat and mass anstructaon on dravanq from thear fraends or relataves lt as the haphaz ard practace sessaons that do the most damaqe the trual and error met'aod whach does noth anq but destroy tame enerqy and laves If you are learnanq to drave by thas method you wnll never be a qood draver You wall never be sure unless someone wath authoraty and experaence has carefully tauqht you how to overcome your daffacultaes The story of Nancy as one that represents thas truth Nan cy was dravanq her car from St Paul to Spokane ln North Dakota she stopped to rest her eyes Sance at was a cold dcay she left the motor unnanq to keep the car warm Nancy was so tared she fell alseep An hour later she dropped over the horn and the next motorast stopped to see what was wronq but at was too late Nancy was another vactam of carbon monoxade poasonanq She was better traaned than most an the laws and proced ure needed to operate a car but her educataon was defaca ent wherean nt faaled to tell her how to detect weaknesses rn her machane These facts can and should capture the anterest of haqh school stud nts If the educa taon and sens of responsabalrty as not more d eply ampressed o the mands of our younq people at wall mean that over one mallson poor dravers wall be added to the haqhways each year Of course many wall be added to the yearly lasts f dead and cratacally anlured but the rest wall contanue to en danger thear laves as well as those of annocent vactams To remedy thas condataon not to prohabat the younq peo ple from dravanq but at certaan ly as not to open the haqhways to us wathout farst provadanq complete knowledge of dravanq skalls and mechanacal anforma taon Once bad habats are form ed they are often daffacult to erase Many communataes an the Unated States have set up plans for teachanq younq people to drave safely by the use of the facalataes provaded an the publac schools In Cleveland Ohao where thas plan of student drav anq courses has been offered over a peraod of tome the num ber of accadents an that vacanaty as been cut an half It been so successful an Calafornaa that at has been made a re quared subaect rn all Calafornaa haqh schools Several other states throuqhout the Unated States are also tryanq to ansta tute thas practnce ln Wasconsan alone seveny thousand younq people have receaved thus traan anq an the past seven years However we should not be Page Seventy Eaght Sponsored by Arnae Kuss Servace Stataon xl X I 4 Q . - . .T - . . l ' I .
