Seniors, your motto brings two thoughts to mind: CU the achiever has a more difficult problem in choosing a path than most people understand, and C21 the mentally-healthy person does a better job of walking the pathway he has chosen. When the privilege of attending college was offered to the veterans returning from World War Il, hundreds of these young adults asked the university counselors to help them find the iob for which they were best suited. Guidance counselors gave batteries of aptitude tests, and they found that the high achievers had the basic requirements to succeed in many fields. It was not so much that a student was made to be a doctor, an engineer, or a teacher, but that the student persevered in the prescribed course of training and made himself into a competent doctor, engineer, or teacher. With the multiplicity of pathways to service in our modern world, there will be no senior spared to task of making choices. After the alternatives have been carefully considered and a choice has been made, the mentally healthy person channels his energies toward trying to make a success of the path he chose. Noted artists have said that we could all learn to paint in oils, play an instrument, and dance gracefully. Possibly each person does achieve less that he could. But, in one's chosen vocation, to achieve a salable service for the competitive world in which we live requires a concentration of best effort. It is not enough to start down a number of paths. It is not wise to dis- sipate energy detouring to see if untried fields produce greener grass. The vigor with which the chosen pathway is trod helps to make the choice turn out well. Wal if MJ?
