Q M yi KVA I , ,, ,nw , in THE RAY Rising Sun High School Rising Sun, Maryland FQREWORD This was an unusual year at Rising Sun High School. Each rain isolated the building in a sea of mud. Classes were conducted against the back- ground of clatter of construction equipment. Confusion and delay were the order of our environment. But the basic work of education continued. The class of T965 will graduate while each succeeding class moves nearer to that same goal. The Seniors share memories of problems solved by mutual effort, fun which is always a part of school, and the final achievement of graduation. The T965 Ray has captured highlights from these activities and re- corded them for all to remember. The staff sincerely hopes that the reader will find delight in reviewing them. CDNTENTS FOREWCRD DEDICATION FACILI LTY AND ADMINISTRATION SENIORS LINDERCLASSMEN ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS MGMENTS TO REMEMBER ADVERTISEMENTS Dedication Miss Eva P. Nutter The Senior Class takes great pleasure in dedi- cating THE 1965 RAY to Miss Eva P. Nutter, who gave much of her time and energy to uphold the scholastic standards of our school and to enrich the lives of her students. Although she has retired from teaching, she will always be remembered in the hearts of all the students who were fortunate enough to have her as a teacher. X W Seniors, your motto brings two thoughts to mind: CU the achiever has a more difficult problem in choosing a path than most people understand, and C21 the mentally-healthy person does a better job of walking the pathway he has chosen. When the privilege of attending college was offered to the veterans returning from World War Il, hundreds of these young adults asked the university counselors to help them find the iob for which they were best suited. Guidance counselors gave batteries of aptitude tests, and they found that the high achievers had the basic requirements to succeed in many fields. It was not so much that a student was made to be a doctor, an engineer, or a teacher, but that the student persevered in the prescribed course of training and made himself into a competent doctor, engineer, or teacher. With the multiplicity of pathways to service in our modern world, there will be no senior spared to task of making choices. After the alternatives have been carefully considered and a choice has been made, the mentally healthy person channels his energies toward trying to make a success of the path he chose. Noted artists have said that we could all learn to paint in oils, play an instrument, and dance gracefully. Possibly each person does achieve less that he could. But, in one's chosen vocation, to achieve a salable service for the competitive world in which we live requires a concentration of best effort. It is not enough to start down a number of paths. It is not wise to dis- sipate energy detouring to see if untried fields produce greener grass. The vigor with which the chosen pathway is trod helps to make the choice turn out well. Wal if MJ? Our American Field Service Foreign Exchange Student I am very glad to have this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to the American Field Service and to Rising Sun High School, because I could come to the States and because everyone has been so helpful to me. In this our world, where the preservation of peace is an extreme need, a big contribution to this purpose can be given by offering the chance to young people to visit foreign countries, especially the United States, whose prominence and prestige are increasing more and more. Simply watching the political election on television, I could realize how many prejudices can fall when direct contact is made with the feelings and the problems of the nation giving hospitality to us. I fervently hope for the continuation and extension of the American Field Service program for better harmony and concord all the world over. fx . 28 'YYLQMOS 'blblkx v M 1, f , Y 'T r lm 2 The Class of I965 CLASS COLORS CLASS FLOWER Blue and Whife ,, MONO Camafiorw Lef us choose well our pafhvvayg we are The ones who musf walk in if. l L MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED MOST TALENTED Bill Frazier W f L W Gloria Montgomery Linda Fretwell L , L 77,,,,, ,7,,, L, Keith Love MOST ATHLETIC MOST COMICAL Lyn Hubis L,L, , L Jeff Grove Dolly Taylor ,, L LL,,,L Bob Webb MOST SCHOOL SPIRITED MOST MANNERLY Shirley Logan ,,,,, ,,,, , ,,,,, , Jeff Grove Robert Carier O Linda MCCar1r1 Favorites l FRIENDLIEST BEST ALL-AROUND Frank STOUT OO OOOO OOOO O OO Leslie Bishop Gloria Wilson OO ,,7,, 7,,,77 O OO Jeff Grove Our Senior Advisors I Miss Villani, Mr. Heaton, Mrs. Oram, Mrs. Cameron Class History In l959, students from Rising Sun, Calvert, and Conowingo Elementary Schools entered the seventh grade at Rising Sun as the class of l965. During the year we held a Russian Week in our social studies class. All the stu- dents wore dark clothes and conducted themselves in the manner of Russian school children. Our first class trip was to Franklin Institute, Betsy Ross House, Carpenter Hall, and Independence Hall in Philadelphia. One of the classes visited the community pond. In the eighth grade we toured a newspaper plant in Philadelphia and the State House and Naval Academy in Annapolis. This was an election year, so many of the history classes debated the issues of the presidential cam- paign. One of the class dances that year was the Mad Hatters Dance. Many of our classmates were in the op- eretta Mississippi Melody. We ended the year with a pleasure trip to Hershey Amusement Park. In the ninth grade we picked our courses for the next four years of study. Several of the classes, while study- ing civics, made a tour of the Chrysler Corporation. That year our music department presented the musical Ca- rousel. Another pleasure trip to Hershey Park ended the year. In the tenth grade one of the classes went to see Romeo and Juliet in Wilmington. Several of the classes had dances, such as the Mr. lrresistible Dance. In March, many of us took part in the musical Oklahomal At the end of the year one of the classes took a trip to Willow Grove Amusement Park. In October of our Junior year, we proudly received our class rings. To help raise money toward the Junior- Senior Prom, we sold Christmas cards, had a car wash, and held dances. On May 2, we held the Prom at the Newark Country Club. The Concert Choir made its first major trip to Burlington, North Carolina, where they sang at several schools, a church, and Elon College. That was the first year for intramural sports. The varsity soccer team won the District Championship. Our president, John F. Kennedy, was assassinated in November of that year. We will always remember how that news affected us. Our Senior year was filled with memorable activities. The class officers were elected. We began with earnest efforts to enlarge the class treasury. The first major event was a chicken barbecue in October. In November we gave the play The Defiance of David Charles. Since this was also an election year, the Seniors conducted a mock election, which involved grades nine through twelve. At an assembly two opposing teams debated the issues of the candidates. During the months from September to March, the yearbook staff worked very hard to meet the deadlines. As the construction work progressed, our school began to change. Our library was enlarged, and bleachers were put into the gymnasium. Wrestling teams were organized as a part of our physical education program. Through the help of many of the Senior boys, the soccer team again won the District Championship. This year has passed swiftly. Graduation ceremonies will never be forgotten. Each year had its own special mem- ories, but we will always cherish the memories of our Senior year. 32 Llnderclassmen Jesse Abrams Joan Aldred Roberta Baldwin Kathleen Barrett Nancy Baugher Albert Biggs Barbara Brokaw Richard Brown James Burcham Robert Burlin Benjamin Clark Paul Coale Paul Connelly Ray Cowan Michael Cowgill Inez Crigler John Cullen Terry Dalton . The dim lights, the couples dancing to the mel- odies of the dance band, and the quiet conversa- tions of each couple added to the romantic atmos- phere. The: soft rustle of Taffeta and the fra- grance of the corsages and boutonnieres com- pleted the setting. We will never forget the ex- citement as the Seniors assembled for their dance. The evening came to a close too soon. Now we look back with fond memories upon the fun we had that night. HCM I Yr X: if f f RX. f.CC2N 5 .Q Q . f 3 I I I CAST OF THE DEFIANCE OF DAVID CHARLES. The play centered around David Charles, whose mother was constantly demanding that he be as brilliant as his father was when he went to school. Finally there arose a tragic crisis among David, his parents, his school mates, and his teachers. Against the colorful background of a high school group, the play was interspersed with moments of drama and sharp comedy. The dual setting, the timing, and the lighting delighted the audience. The Ray Farewell The yearbook staff would like to take this oppor- tunity to thank the many people who have made this yearbook possible. We especially would like to thank the faculty for their understanding when a deadline was approaching, Mr. Bayless for taking and developing pictures when we found a void in the book, the patrons and the advertisers for giving us financial aid, Mrs. Cameron for helping us proofread, and Mrs. Oram for guiding us. We seventeen tired, but contented. staff members, hope that our efforts to combine a tangled maze of plans, pictures, and names into THE RAY have been worthwhile. !s9 Q4f0f4..
