We made new friends and renewed old friendships, had much Tun, and sTudied hard. We'll all remember cheering The Tigers on To vicTory, aTTending The dances, and siTTing Through assemblies. Everyone shared The realiTy of exams and reporT cards, deadlines, and The noonTime caTeTeria rush. These Things will never be Torgofren. Underclassmen, remember To uphold The sTandards of Rising Sun High School and sTrive each year To improve Them. As we Seniors go our separaTe ways, we will use The knowledge gained here To obTain success. All of us will Treasure our school years and cherish The fond memories ThaT have been recorded in THE RAY. DEDI CATI ON W F 523 xi :Z VA,, V ,, W 5 J V- Z OUR SENIOR ADVISORS It is with our most sincere appreciation that we, the class of 1964, dedicate to our Senior Advisors, this book filled with our most cherished memories. We wish to express our gratitude for the understanding which they have shown us during our years at Rising Sun High School. For their valuable service and guidance, we are extremely grateful. 3 vi 31 I' MESSAGE Dear Seniors, Your class motto, No one knows what it is that he can do 'til he tries, is well chosen. Through the years the idea has been expressed in other words, such as, A man's reach should exceed his grasp, and, The strongest weapon can't reach a target unless it is aimed high. The wisdom in your motto bears repeating for men and women often need Shakespeare's reminder that our fate lies not in our stars, but in ourselves. This is an era of courageous aims. Currently I am reading We Seven, published last year by Simon and Schuster. The book was written by and about the seven project Mercury astronauts. Each of the men selected was a graduate engineer and a test pilot. That might be sufficient accomplishment for many men, but these seven sought the opportunity to aid in the search for better answers on space exploration and survival. It is an exciting book. The reader will admit that each of the astronauts seem to possess superior health and intelligence, but even so, the world would not have known what they could do unless they tried. You and I are aware that American history contains a long list of men and women who tried and succeeded notably. The need for farsighted goals and faith in one's self is equally as important in the present as it was in the past. It seems to me that there are probably more heroes today than at any previous time. As you leave us, Seniors, you can hardly find better counsel than your own motto. Should any one of you be tempted to complain, But, I do not have the superior qualities of the astronauts or the other heroes, then Edison's way of saying your motto would be directed to you, Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration. Each one of you is well endowed to be a worthy citizen of whom all of us on the faculty will continue to be proud. Most Sincerely, PRI CIPAUS LELIA FRASER Guidance Counselor SAMUEL B. RR NXO?5ON2i EBEAVNXN SN CLASS HI TORY When we the members of the Class of I9611 entered the seventh grade in Sept- ember of I958, we had come from Rising Sun, Conowingo, and Calvert Elementary Schools. One of the highlights of our first year of iunior high was a trip to Philadel- phia where we visited the Franklin Institute, Independence Hall, and the Philadelphia Airport. Another activity was a picnic at the Rising Sun Community Pond. In the eighth grade, we sang in a Christmas program, and at the end of the year, we took a trip to Hershey Park. At the beginning of the ninth grade, we chose the course of study that we wished to pursue for the next four years. Some of us went to Wilmington to see Midsum- mer Night's Dream. The entire class went on a tour of the Tide Water Oil Refinery. Later in the year we visited our state capital, Annapolis. The music department for the first time presented an operetta, Gypsy Rover, in which many of our class members participated. The next year we came back as hard working sophomores. The Sweater Hop was one of our money making projects. Many members of our class took part in Carousel, which was presented in the spring. At the end of the year some of the classes went to Willow Grove Amusement Park. At the beginning of our Junior year we received our class rings. We began to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom in the spring. In the fall we held a Record Hop, and at Christmas, we sold Christmas cards. During that year, the Music Depart- ment presented Oklahoma, We began making plans in February for our Prom. We set the date for May I I with the theme Oriental Gardens. As we approached the end of the year, the staff was selected for the 64 Ray , thus, work on the most important book of our lives was started. As we returned in September of '63 as Seniors of R.S.H.S., we were all thinking about our future and of graduation day. In December we presented our class play, The Perfect ldiot. After Christmas vacation, we sponsored Pep Week. Then we selected our name cards and announcements. After mid-years we began to give attention to the planning of Class Night, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. A CHALLENGE Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. The immortal words inscribed above are taken from the Inaugural Address of our late president, John Fitzgerald Kennedy. When we carefully evaluate these words, we discover in them a special meaning for each of us. We received the greatest gift of all when we inherited the gift of freedom. It is up to our generation to either maintain and supplement this gift to be passed on to our posterity or to let it wither and die at a crucial point of its existence. Let us take our courage in hand to face the challenge, no matter how great, To maintain and preserve this gift we so love and cherish. , --4 I II W Lois Abel Betty Ashley Donna Barrow Arthur Barton Henry Baugher Ruth Ann Bauguess Louise Benjamin Leslie Bishop Jessie Brooks Mary Burton Barry Cameron Robert Carter Barbara Chapman Pauline Chapman Melissa Copenhave Pat Cowgill Virginia Coulson Louise Craft Y ,rfb f X 'N if x' -i ei 4 at 'Q A ig Jimi, Qi gfsivy' Vial Q Tommy Crothers Randy Cumm Francis Dixon Phyllis Duke Nancy Durgin Lavon Eichelberger Hazel Eldreth Shirley Eldreth Nancy Faus Rex Feltman Harry Fisher Delphine Fowler If Virginia Fox David Frazier Sharon Frazier William Frazier - Linda Fretwell - Judy Gabbert i:.:V , -L Robert Gambill 4' 5 ww 6' Writ 'i L L Sr l ,E I -wiv 'F W Q' 'lu ' 'Sf f 2 f ' ... Dan had problems of his own and hoped to turn the situation in his favor when he agreed to tutor Puff. All the group had to help Dan convince his parents of his popularity so they would permit him to enter college. Reluctantly the group bargained with Dan. Linda, who was to go steady with him, particularly disliked the deal but agreed for the sake of her classmates and the school. Dan used his invention, a hypnotic suggestion machine, to transform Puff into a scholar. When Latherby, the soap manufacturer from whose radio show Dan was fired, became curious about the machine, he hypnotized himself into becoming a rabbit. From this point the plot became involved. Puff lost interest in athletics, Jeannie discovered that Jackie was fickle, Dan tried to stay out of college, to be with Linda, who tried to enter college to be with him. Dan's parents were completely bewildered. Latherby shouted for parsnips while Dr. Von Barf pro- nounced Dan the perfect idiot. We wish to thank our senior advisors for all their assistance during our senior play. The play would not have been possible without them. We also wish to thank our prompters, Vicky Frock, Susan Lucas, Barbara Kerns, and Kathy Crothers.
