' Bda. jau. ' The Sigma BeTa Tau lcommercial Clubl had a very acTive and enjoyable year. To begin wiTh, They had Their elecTion oT oTFicers. Those elecTed were: Lavola Bussing, presidenTg Peggy Gibbons, vice-presidenTg BeTTy Showers, secreTaryg Josephine BallaTore, Treas- urer: Nellie Kuil and Diane Pearson-, congressmen. One of The club's TirsT acTiviTies was an alumni dance, held in The sTudy hall. This proved To be one of The early successes oT The year's social evenTs. In February The club made a Trip To San Francisco To go Through some of The larger business houses. One gay nighT was spenT aT The l-loTel Mark Hopkins. During The year. The club puT on many sales To raise money To help buy a business machine ThaT is soon To be boughT Tor The school as a memorial To pasT and TuTure Sigma BeTa Tau clubs. WiTh Miss Becker as our TaculTy adviser, and Peggy Gibbons and Jackie Kincaid as sTudenT acl- visers, we elecTed The Tollowing oTFicers: Russell Mc- Namer, presidenTg Gene Driver, vice-presidenT: Bar- bara Gerbing. secreTary-Treasurer: Sadie Williams and Russell McNamer, congressmen. Our TirsT proiecT was The membership drive, in which we reached our goal OT IOOY, enrollmenT. DelegaTes were senT To The SacramenTo STaTe Con- venTion where They learned more abouT Red Cross acTiviTies. We were hosT Tor The DisTricT MeeTing, which was held in December. Wi+h The desire of doing someThing Tor The com- muniTy, we sponsored a SanTa Claus To give candy To The children. We also packaged The ChrisTmas candy. We have had a very successTul year and mosT OT The crediT should go To Miss Becker who is always enThusiasTic and desirous OT accomplishing some- Thing worTh while. yas gm The acTiviTies oT The Glee Club This year included parTicipaTion in many inTeresTing evenTs. Their appearance wiTh The band aT The communiTy ChrisT- mas program was pleasing To all. As was The case wiTh The band, They had a very shorT Time in which To prepare Their program. The winTer program puT on wiTh The band was a big success, and was a Tine demonsTraTion oT The work ThaT can be done by This organizaTion. AT The daTe OT This wriTing, plans were being considered Tor enTering The Glee Club in The TesTival aT Oakland, This To be a conTesT Tor high schools Trom all over NorThern CaliTornia. 0 Because The orchesTra was noT organized unTil The second semesTer, iTs acTiviTies were confined To The annual play and To BaccalaureaTe services. AlThough In an exchange assembly program wiTh Tv1anTeca High School during The spring semesTer, The Glee Club presenTed a program which was well meT by The TvTanTeca sTudenT body. Also in The spring. The choral group presenTed anoTher concerT wiTh The band. This was The crowning poinT oT The year's work. Under The able direcTorship oT Mr. Melvin Wey- and, The Glee Club sang iTs way Through a very suc- cessTul year indeed. Like lasT year, and in years previous, The group was an all-girl chorus. Socially, The season was a success, Too. A Tew goT married, some became engaged, and The resT iusT had Tun! The organizaTion did noT meeT regularly, iTs work was greaTly appreciaTed, and showed The resulT oT serious inTeresT on The parT oT all. X Band Having won a FirsT Division raTing lasT year in The STaTe Band CompeTiTion Tor NorThern CaliTornia bands, The members of This year's band planned To repeaT ThaT perTormance, or even ouT-do lasT year's record. They began wiTh a bang on OcTober I8, winning a gold Trophy and a blue ribbon in The regional parade oT The CaliTornia STaTe T-lorseman's AssociaTion. Then. aTTer marching Tor a successTul TooTball season, The band accompanied The Team To Los Banos Tor The league play-oTT. ln The middle oT preparaTions Tor The winTer con- cerT, The band, along wiTh The Glee Club, was asked To play Tor The ComrnuniTy ChrisTmas program, which was a big success even Though The music had To be learned in a week. Everyone goT weT when The band had To march in The rain aT The EasT-WesT game on New Year's Day, buT The music was okay and everybody had Tun aT The beach aTTerwards. During February The band wiTh The Glee Club gave a concerT oT excepTionally Tine qualiTy. In May They wenT To The annual band compeTiTion which was held in Oakland This year. ln The laTTer parT oT May The band and The Glee Club gave anoTher con- cerT ThaT was really someThing To hear. Also in The spring The band made a Tour oT The local grammar schools, and in June ended a very successTul year by playing Tor The graduaTion exercises.
