B0 and irl Staters Learn Democracy l in Action Boys' and Girls' Slate alternates are sealed, left to riglit: William Barry, Michael Salas, Roger Lattanza, Geneva Cole, Cynthia Vigil, Judy Armijo, Barbara Wright, and Becky Atkinson. Standing are: Harold Morelock and James Hogue. Boys' and Girls' State is the most thrilling honor any high school junior could experience. The only fault one could find with it is the fact that only seven boys and seven girls are chosen annually as delegates from Rio. lt is the practical process of learning in a democracy. A government is established and carried out. The offices range from state to city. Many laws are enforced, and new bills are drawn up. , Many new and lasting friends are made during this one short week, and many new ideas are established. This lesson in government is not only educational but also ex- citing and packed with fun. The program, put on by the American Legion, is one of the most profitable pro- grams that has ever been offered to high school students throughout the country. l 75
