Miss Miller,s career as the sponsor of Rio Grande's Yearbook staff began in 1958 the year the school opened. With Miss Miller's help the PO-YE-DA has expanded into two staffs which has been a necessity for the size of book which is being produced. In addition to her other work, this year Miss Miller has been promoted to the head of the English Department. The 1965 yearbook staff joins the preceding staffs in honoring their sponsor and friend Miss Sarah Miller. 8 W MN E-J ill-Q, Speaking with two seniors is our principal, Mr. Gilbert E. Miranda THE PURPOSE SHOULD BE CLEAR. Where there is no clear purpose there is no strength of character. Vifhere there is no strength there can be no success. It is one thing to declare a purpose, another to stick it out to the end. What we need is a clear purpose plus the integration of life around it. Integrating all the circumstances and events of life should not hinder but enhance the basic aim. Someone once said that the difference between an integrated and an unintegrated life is the difference between a bound volume and memoranda on the backs of envelopes. Former RAVEN S established the pattern for current and future RAVENS. Much has been said about the students who attend Rio Grande High School. Complimentary phrases have been showered on Ravens by those directly associated with Rio Grande High School. These words of praise have been reinforced by interested observers. Letis enrich this tradition by making our contribution toward the central purpose. Gilbert E. Miranda l l r BOARD OF EDUCATION Charles R. Since Rio Grande opened seven years ago, Miss Miller has been with the yearbook, forming the firm basis on which it was built and on which it is now develop- ing. This year she is joined by Mrs. Mitchell, who is new to Ra- venland. Throughout this school year they have provided the staff with coun- sel and guidance. As sponsors they are also volunteering their time and efforts. Here we would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to Miss Miller and Mrs. Mitchell: Thank you ever so much. We couldn't have done it without you . 40 Compiling the 1964-1965 edition of Po-Ye-Da is a team of two pretty and efficient editors. Into the pages of this book, Priscilla and Karen have com- bined their ideas, their inspirations, and their many and varied thoughts. Rushing to meet the deadlines and running around to make appointments and interviews, both are indeed two of the busiest girls on campus. In the midst of this hectic schedule, they of- ten take time to offer advice and help- ful criticisms to members of the staff. And besides staying long hours after school, they sometimes sacrifice pre- cious weekends in order to finish the work that must be done. It is extremely difficult to sum up their talents and fine attributes. They are not only capable and original but also cheerful, dependable, and hard- working. We, of the staff, take this oppor- tunity to congratulate Karen and Pris- cilla on an excellent job well done. ,.., ., ,, r ...Q-M.. .. an f me-wn.,f.f - The Quill and Scroll is an honorary club for students of joumalism. The Science Club The primary purpose of the Rio Grande High School Science Club is to promote interest' among students in all fields of science. Each spring the Science Club sponsors the Rio Grande Science Fair, a function which permits any Rio Grande student to do research in the science field of his or her choice and then display his project publicly and in open competition. Projects which gain enough recognition from judges of the local fair are selected for competition in the Northwestem Regional Science Fair sponsored each year by the University of New Mexico. If the project survives the keen competition in the Regional Fair, it may be selected for state or national competition. In addition to sponsoring the Science Fair, the club also promotes field trips to local industrial and government plants and various places of scientific interest. Also, during the 1963-1964 school year, the Science Club operated a photo developing service for Ravens. However, the 1964-1965 school year found the club without enough members who were qualified in photography to offer this service. Interest in photography prevailed however, and the members quickly organized instruction sessions which were taught by Mr. Kenneth Cave, a Rio Grande faculty member, who is a competent photographer. The Ravens' unseasoned team had many disappointments, however. ln our first game of the season, the Ravens invaded the land of the Monarchs. This hard-hitting game came as a disappointment when the Monarchs had to forfeit a 26-6 win to Rio Grande because of an ineligible player. Valley seemed to be a more worthy team for the Ravens, but in the last quarter of the game Valley pulled ahead and won the game by a 14-7 victory. At Cortez, Colorado, the Rio Ravens spoiled Cortez' homecoming by romping them 32-13. Our own home- coming was more of a heartbreak, for Albuquerque High defeated us by one point. Score: 14-13. Our third Win of the year came when the Santa Fe Demons rolled onto the football field. By Ray Maxeyls passing, the game was won with a score of 20-13. Rio,s natural enemy, Highland, was the next for the Ravens and the Hornets devoured the Ravens by beat- ing them 53-13. Riois second heartbreak came when the Farmington Scorpions beat the Ravens in the last five seconds of the game by a score of 27-26. Because of the triple- threat quarterback, Ray Maxey, the football team en- joyed a season of good running and passing. On the Rio Grande kickoff at the be- ginning of the game, the crowd thrillsias end Larry Smith closes in for the tackle. As the end of the game came near, the crowd saw a 14-13 win accredited to the Albuquerque High Bulldogs. Yet, with the enthusiasm, co-operation, pride, and help of a great majority of student council members and Ravens in general, I feel l have been able to place student affairs in its proper perspective in reference to our primary purpose in school-education.
