A-vu.-..,,, ,,40 ' Symbol of a Changing Rio Grande Not in vain the distance beacons, Forward, forward let us range, Let the great world spin forever clown the ringing grooves of change. Tennyson The year 1963-64 has brought many changes to Rio Grande High School. Three new buildings have appeared on the campus in which to teach our in- creasing enrollment. We have added new programs and new teachers. l.B.M. Cards have taken the place of the old, time-consuming methods of reporting grades. The student government has been modified to include class officers. Of the mainy changes that have taken place this year, the most significant has been the new administration. As a symbol of this' changing school, we proudly dedicate the 1964 Po-Ye-Da to our principal, Mr. Gilbert Miranda. If the primary aim of education is directed towarcl the welfare of human beings, then the develop- ment and practice of ideas is the maior responsibility' of a conscientious RAVEN. It must be his endeavor to know and understand himself as he functions in- dividually and collectively. The challenge is great, the purpose is not always clear. It may be to a student's advantage to investigate the notion that man cannot conceive ideas without forming images. Images are built on choices that may or may not reflect the dignity and worth of the individual. The choice of a student must be to strengthen a con- structive self-concept that will create and inspire a wholesome image of a school, state, community and world. If Rio Grande High School is to operate within the framework of ideas which consist of insights into images that strengthen or censure modes of behavior and attitucles, then RAVENS must be will- ing to accept the challenge of developing and un- derstanding the type of individual self-concept that will foster pride and success in community living. There has been hard work on' the part of the coaches and boys to give the student body the best performance they could. ln victory or defeat the stu- dent body is proud of its Raven athletes. 249 Speedy Ernie a UTSTHII din ERNIE LUERAS The outstanding wrestler for 1964 is ERNIE LUERAS. As a sophomore Ernie was the outstanding wrestler at the Y.M.C.A. Tournament. He is as great as any state champion we have had at Rio. The only thing that slowed him down were iniuries: first, a shoulder, then an ankle and then a rib. IN SPITE of his bad luck Ernie never took a back seat to anyone. He always wrestled to win. When he lost, he always worked that much harder. IN PRACTICE, when you combine Ernie's strength and attitude with his ability to wrestle, you have a real champion. For that is what Ernie is. -coAcH CIP ESQUIBEL Gonzales, Lueras., thletes ALBERT SPEEDY GONZALES SPEEDY GONZALES has been a starter on the Raven football team for three years. He has improved to a point where this, his senior year, he was picked first team All-State Guard. In my estimation Speedy would be an outstanding football player anywhere in the country. He is big, strong, and fast and has all the necessary equipment to go on and become an outstanding college player. He is an excellent blocker and one of the best defensive linemen I have had the privilege to see. Speedy also did our place kicking on kick-offs and extra points. This boy was chosen as the outstanding football player for 1963 by his team mates. -COACH AL WRIGHT ALBERT could always be counted upon to perform to the very limit of his capabilities. He was our leading rebounder, one of our top two scorers, and most important of all, he possessed an unyielding desire to win. -COACH LARRY TUTTLE Rio Rio Rio Rio Rio Rio Rio Rio 252 Grande Grande Grande Grande Grande Grande Grande Grande 1963 64 Raven YLZ'Riff?.w2!'4l,'lAl9ii?i3TE541li :J i2a2ig2rg,y.-Q f -QF 1' ,iz ' rr4,qg3,y'fr12'?d'2i,i,5Sr THIRD ROW: Bill Hauer, Pete Sandova, Douglas Miller, Pat Washington, Albert Gonzales.
