CUACI-I'S CDR ER With the loss of six starting seniors from 1986 and only one returning senior in 1987, it appeared to be a rebuildingdyear. A very good group of juniors an sophomores gave hope to an excellent stepping stone and a possible shot at the section title, but the inexperience of the younger pla ' ers and inconsistencies on the pitch- ing mound led to a second consec- utive fourth place finish in section play For the 1988 season, the team wil return eight starters and with another year's exlperience, senior pitchers, Wendy ewis and Amy Gambrasi behind the leadership of senior team captain, Carey Balog, the prospects for a first place finish in section play is within reach. 1987 Softball Team RHS OPI' 16 Charleroi 11 14 Uniontown 10 4 Connellsville 9 2 Brownsville 13 6 Laurel Highlands 9 82 Belle Vernon 22 8 Charleroi 9 RHS 31 Uniontown 0 Connellsville 9 Brownsville 8 Laurel Highlands 3 Belle Vernon Won 4 OPP 5 1 7 10 22 Lost 175

COACH'S COR ER The baseball team for 1987 was like watching a child grow into adulthood or watching a garden grow from seed to flower to the finishe product. We start- ed with a fresh group of students and a few upperclassmen. The exhibition games did not hold much promise for a successful season, but we watched, we grew and we survived. The league gave us all we could handle, and before we had layed our sixth game our record was lJwin and 4 losses. All the outsiders wrote us off at this point as having a losing season. But the players and coaches watched and learned and ma- tured. The remainder of the season was a treatp we finished with 8 wins and 7 losses and made the playoffs for the first time since 1980. lt was a rewarding year for the play- ers and coaches.
