WRESTLING SUMMARY The Bears enjoyed a new sport this year, when they enthusiastically tried their skills at wrestling. Not any laurels were won, but the ex- perience should reap good accounts for the next year. Bruce Wood, heavyweight, placed second in the Slope meet at Montrose this gave him the right to enter the State meet in Denver. Jack Bessire did a fine job in the 133 pound division.

BASKETBALL SUMMARY ln basketball the mighty Bears showed their superiority in athletics by bringing home for the first time, The Western Slope Championship by virtue of an uphill 46-42 victory over Delta. Highlights of the season were the 2 games with Craig wherein fans saw a brand of basketball seldomly seen Craig had a scoring machine that averaged in the 60's but our stalwart Bears took their measure twice During the State Tournament in Denver the Bears were forced to bow to Salida in the initial game but a victory over Brush put them in the Final for Consolation honors against Brighton The battle how ever proved too much for the Bears but the boys scrapped until the very end Bill Rogers was the recipient of All State Honors for his scintillating brilliant play This honor was the first of its kind to ever be received by a Rifle Bear FOOTBALL SUMMARY The Rifle Bears enjoyed their best season in the sport of football dur ing the year 1952 The winning of 10 games the losing of two and the tying of one put the Bears on their home field on December 5 1952 against the formidable Fort Morgan Maroons in the State Championship Final After a grueling battle the Maroons edged our stalwarts 21 14 However in the defeat Rifle Bears gained state wide recognition both for their playing and their hospitality Highlights of the season were an upset win over mighty Golden a 6 6 tie with Grand Junction a 7 0 victory over Delta for the Slope Champ ionship a thrilling State Semi Final game with Cortez which saw both teams coming from behind twice to go into the lead The Bears triumphed with an explosive second half performance 25 14 The team was capably led by seven seniorq Jack Bessire Norman Peercy bone crushing fullbacks Lannie Dix rugged and smashing end Don Hall a bulwark on offense and defense at tackle Bert Griefenburg tough at guard Terry Hogge crafty and pass snaring end Ten of the squad captures All State Recognition Jimmie Kiggins Lannie Dix Bruce Wood Norman Peercy Clark Zas trow Bert Griefenburg Don Hall Terry Hogge Bill Rogers and Robert Reigan. . , .
