Football started the first day of school with about 40 boys coming out and with 10 lettermen returning. After two weeks of practice we had our first game with Craig. The score was O to O. One week later the team met Meeker here on our own field and beat the Cowboys 18 to O. On the 26th of September, with there and came home After this game the a very enthusiastic team we played Olathe more so, after defeating Olathe 20 to O. team fought to keep our goal line uncross- ed by our opponents, and had their real battle for this when they met the Glenwood Demons here on October 5 in the first conference game in the new Lower Colorado Valley A League. It was a tough fight with the score coming out O to O. The play off would be Armistice Day. The next game was with Cen- tral and we came out with a 59 to O victory. The next week the newly organized Rangley team traveled here for the next game and went home with a 27 to O loss for them. Our next opponents were the new rivals, Fruita. The Bears met them on their field and came home with another victory, 19 to O. Then came the big game, the Armistice Day Game at Glen- wood, the results of which would mean the League title. The Bears were well supported by the town of Rifle who turned out almost in full. The game was hard fought wlth both teams well matched and each trreatening to score many times only to be pushed back At the end of the game the score was still O to O and it was decided to have a play off games in Grand Junction, November 15 On Friday the 15th of November the two teams met at Grand Junction where the games was broadcasted over KFXJ This was one of the hardest fought in scoring positions only gun sounded the score was coaches and referees they yd line Each team would have 6 had the first play and after that forth until our 5th play Unable still O decided games of the year with both teams to lose the ball When the final to O After a conference of to place the ball on the 50 downs, alternately Rifle the ball sesawed back and to get a pass away one of the Rifle boys was brought down on our 56 yd line This was where the ball was at the end of the game and Glenwood the League Championship which they lost 6 to O So it was that the undefeated, even unscored upon Bears upon a very generous gesture on the part of Glenwood became League Co champions with Glenwood When the All Conference team was selected Rifle had 7 players on the lst and 2nd teams Those making these teams were Wilbur Mikkelson, Jack Latham, Bill Isenhart, Backfield men Mike Lucero, end, Stan Brown and Russell Loesch, Guards, and Kaye Keller, Center There were 21 boys that earned letters this year, 15 of which will be back next year Howard Gardner Maynard Poplin Mike Lucero Tackle Junior End Junior Bob Meisner End Junior Center, Senior Q13 -84' Russell Loesch Tackle, Senior Elwood Hickman Center, Senior Tbn Ross Guard, Senior Stan Brown Guard Senior I I D .
