IRISH SHINE IN 79 League 8-2 Season 9-12 The Irish team started the season with only four of their six returning lettermen. Eight new players were added to the roster with hopes that they would gain experience fast. The season started out slow for the girls, losing seven games and winning only three. As soon as league started the Irish were shining, however. They sparkled so much they won all their games except for losing to St. Mary's twice. Then, before they or anybody knew it. they were in the district playoffs facing the Yoncalla Eagles; the team they have met twice before in playoff action. But after the match, the Eagles had prevailed once again taking away the District 5-A Crown we had in 1978. At the beginning of the season the OSAA established a new rule concerning substitutions. This rule was created to eliminate confusion between the officials and players. 1. Caron Michaels bumps the ball to the setter. 2. Angela Green goes in for Lesa Aikins as a spiker. 3. The seniors for the 1979 season were Jill Juhl 12, Nena Bryant 21, Caron Mi chaels 14, and Captain Lesa Aikins 24. 4. Angela Robbins waits as Connie Bruner sets the ball to her 5. The Irish team that made the district playoffs this year were: Nancy Block. Nanci Humphreys, Caron Michaels, Jill Juhl, Nena Bryant, Connie Bruner, Cindie Wagoner. Angela Robbins, Angela Green, Kari Zenchenko, Lesa Aikins, Teresa Miller, manager Chris Galloway, and Coach Anderson. Awards were presented to Jill Juhl-Most Valuable and Outstanding Senior. Nena Bryant-Most Inspirational, Cindie Wagoner-Most Improved, and Lesa Aikins-Team Captain. Also a gift was given to Chris Galloway for being the team’s manager and a gift for Ardie Juhl for being a stat. Four Irish players made the All-Star team: Cindie Wagoner and Nena Bryant second team and Lesa Aikins and Jill Juhl first team.
