(2hi£. xHeucL. ti At the beginning of the 1949 school term yell leaders were elected by the student body to serve in that position until they graduate. Doris Hollingsworth-electee from the Junior class-now a Senior, will graduate this year. She will be replaced by an electee from the Sophomore class of 1951-'52 after serving as cheerleader for two school terms. Marlene Smith was elected from the Sophomore class. She will serve as yell leader for one more school term. Noma Townsend, from the Freshman class will leave high school having served as yell leader for four school terms. Working together these three girls have encouraged our school spirit at our many football and basketball games. They wore white long-sleeved satin blouses with kelly green full skirts. iBatld The Riddle School Band was formed under the direction of Mr. Curtis Winders at the beginning of the 1940-'50 school term. On December 22, 1940 the band made its first public appearance at the Christmas program. Main event of the band's first year was the trip to Portland to participate in the Rose Festival of 1950. Forty-two members made this trip by bus on June 8. The band marched in the Junior Rose Festival on June 10 and brought home two trophys which made us very proud of them. They took first place in first year bands and second place in all around competition with other bands. The band started off 1950 by playing over the radio on January 9 and presenting a concert on January 11. A tour was made in April to several South Douglas schools where short concerts were given. On May 7 the band presented their spring concert. Besides selections and marches by the entire group there were a number of solos which gave individual members a chance to show what they could do. Luckily the band will lose only three members through graduation: Doris Hollingsworth, Robert Strode, and Betty Wagoner. 34
