The Riddle Irish volleyball team vyas successful in winning first place in the South Douglas Tournament and second place in the 1948-1949 county finals. Riddle High School was represented on the county All-Star volleyball team by the following girls: Marjorie Boyd, Laurel Zumwalt, Jennie Howard, Gladys Rupp, Doris Gilbreath, and Ardeth Aikins. JAMBOREE The annual basketball and volleyball jamboree was held in the Riddle gymnasium on December 10, 1948. The following teams played in the jamboree: Riddle, Days Creek, Canyonville, Myrtle Creek, Glendale, and Camas Valley. The coaches of each team drew a number to determine their opponents for the night. The Riddle girls defeated the Canyonville girls in the first game by a score of 32 to 2. The Riddle boys emerged as winners over the Camas Valley team with a resulting score of 30 to 15. TOURNAMENTS Riddle, Canyonville, Glendale, and Days Creek participated in the South Douglas Tournament held in the Riddle gymnasium, February 9 and 11. The boys' and girls' team both came out the same with Riddle first, Canyonville second, Glendale third, and Days Creek fourth place. In the Douglas County finals -held in the Riddle gymnasium, February 16 and 18, the basketball teams placed as follows: Drain first, Riddle second, Canyonville third, and Oakland fourth. The volleyball teams placed somewhat similar with Drain first, Riddle second, Canyonville third, and Elkton fourth. Trophies were presented to the teams, and both basketball and volleyball All-Stars were selected. By placing second in the County Tournament the Riddle basketball team earned the right to participate in the District B-4 Tournament held in the Marshfield gymnasium, on February 25 and 26. On Friday night Riddle played Powers which ended in a close fought game with Riddle emerging as the winner by two points. Drain defeated Brookings on the same night by two points. On Saturday, February 26, Drain downed the Irish team by a score of 30 to 28 to give Drain first and Riddle second place. At the O. C. E. Invitational Tournament held at Ashland, March 2, 3, 4, and 5, the Riddle boys lost the first game to Powers 32 to 26. They won the second game from Coos River 22 to 21, and lost the third game to Valsetz 40 to 35.
