The Freshman class is well represented this year with twenty-two members. We are very proud of our class members who participated in both basketball and volleyball. Our first year in high school proved to be very enjoyable, and we are looking forward with great eagerness to our Sophomore year. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY President.........................................Bob Strode Vice-President......................jVilliam Vaughn Secretary.....................Doris Hollingsworth Advisor. .............................. Mr. Wilson Class Colors........................Blue and White Class Flower.................................Gladiola Class Motto.........Win or lose-We never give up. In the fall of 1947, in the month of September, thirteen green Freshmen entered the ground of the Riddle High School. This year we lost two freshies in the first semester and gained one in the second semester. We survived the razzing of the upper classmen and the initiation by the Sophomores. At the end of our first term there remained with us the remembrance of past days and with great encouragement to become Seniors. In the year of '48 we entered the Riddle High School as a group of thirteen, with the following, new in our ranks: Doris Hollingsworth from Jacksonville, Oregon, Betty Wagoner from Indiana, Isa Macdonald from Scotland, Jean Renhard from Colton, Oregon, Thomas Scott from Oklahoma, and Neal Lamphear from Aberdeen, Washington. In the first semester of the same year we lost Thomas Scott who went back to Oklahoma. We have been active in all of the activities of the high school this year. We will try our best to do better next year as Juniors. 14

CARNIVAL On the evening of November 5, 1949, a capacity crowd gathered in the gym for the second annual school carnival which was opened by several boxing matches. As people visited the many different booths, they were showered with confetti and nudged by balloons. Some of the booths enjoyed were the fish pond, telegram, country store, dart throw, fleece ball, and, of course, the most frequented one---the food booth. Many valuable prizes were raffled off during the course of the evening. The important event of the evening was the coronation ceremony, when George Vaughn, escort, crowned Barbara Mealer, of the Freshman class, Queen of the carnival. Her princesses and their escorts were Laurel Zumwalt with Don Riddle, of the Senior class; Priscilla Pruner with Don Zifka, of the Junior class; and Doris Hollingsworth with Albert Hausotter of the Sophomore class. FRESHMAN INITIATION Freshman initiation took place on October 29, 1948. They had to wear old clothes which made you wonder who they were. As usual the girls had to wear old coveralls and a very becoming necklace of onions. The Sophomores were all equipped with paddles so the Freshmen did just what the Sophomores told them to do. The boys wore gunny sack skirts and mother’s high heel slippers. After all was over that day, they were given a party by the Sophomores Monday night, November 1, 1948. SHAMROCK CLUB SPONSORED SKATING PARTY On Monday evening of January 17, 1949, the Shamrock Club of R. H. S. sponsored a skating party at Artlees Skateway, which most of the Riddle students attended. They had most of the regular skating, although, some of the boys and girls showed their brilliance by doing specialities that sometimes ended on the floor. Some were really experts on skates while others tried for the first time and found it wasn’t so easy as it looked. Almost all of the couples tried their luck in the Grand March. To our surprise, both Coach and Mrs. Brown did very nicely on skates! Our fun ended at 9: 0 P. M. after a delightful but bruising evening! 16
