Foreword The theme of our SHIELD is, of all things, magazines. Do not tell us that we are buttering our bread on both sides. Think of the advantages. With- out visible strain, the SHIELD’S divi- sion pages, which begin each section, can be matched with a magazine. Con- sider how naturally SENIOR SCHO- LASTIC fits the SENIOR section or MAD fits Activities. We admit, how- ever, that when we came to Administra- tion’s division page, we were forced to reject our more imaginative choices in favor of sedate FORBES. But outside this slight contretemps, plus the refusal of READERS’ DIGEST and NA- TIONAL GEOGRAPHIC to fall in with our notion of snappy journalism, we are delighted with our choice of theme. We think, for example, that LIFE, which graces this page, is a true philo- sophical victory. Which way do we want life to go? FORWARD (hum), of course. What are we looking forward to? LIFE, obviously. What is the SHIELD full of? LIFE! What kind of time have we had at dear old Richmond High? The time of our LIFE. (TIME is also one of our nuggets.) What do we spend hours trying to figure out? LIFE. What natural right do we hold most dear, besides liberty and the pur- suit of happiness? LIFE. What is not a bed of roses, an empty dream, and often hangs by a thread? LIFE. We grow breathless rattling off the possibil- ities. But, as we said, life must go for- ward. So we end. Viva!
