As rhe evo urion process rook place in Richfield over rhe past years, rhe srudenrs have emerged as a new breed of loyal Sporrans. The sreps rhar hove been token by rhe foculry and rhe srudenrs have changed rhe school in many ways. Through rhis process of evoturion, Sporrans have expanded rheir horizons ro become a school of exrroordinory diversness. Dy presenring rheir exrreme differences and individuality Sporrans have shown rhar they ore unique and full of unbounded personality. This year, Richfield High School, along with only one other school in rhe store, received a great honor: notional recognition for our excellence and distinction. Oper g 7 Richfield, One Of The Notions Best National Award Of Excellence The award ceremony in Washington D C. on August 27, was the final step in the rigorous process roword Richfield's being announced as one of the no rion's most successful secondary schools in America. Our of 555 schools across the notion originally nominated, only 202 public junior and senior high schools achieved that status. According to the Secretory of Education, T.H. Dell, these schools hove demonstrated that they foster maximum student development and learning, pay coreful attention to the educational needs of all their students, and ore committed to overcoming obstacles and sustaining an alreody high quality program. The long process began in January of 1983 when the odminisrrarion completed a 21-poge application from the U S. Department of Education. Then the Minnesota Office of Education screened the applicants in order to nominate eighr schools. Next, two separate ponels in Washington D.C. met to consider four of the eighr schools for valtdarion visits. The two-day visitation evaluation was conducted in May of 1983 by Dr. Dorothy Shipman from Dali Stare University. Her purpose was to confirm the information given in the application and to inspect the building and programs. She also observed more than 50 dosses and interviewed students, teachers, parents, and staff to get their feelings about Richfield High School. In June, the U.S. Department of Education announced rhor 114 senior high schools would receive recognition. Among them, Richfield ond Edina, the only schools from Minnesota, were to be honored. At the presentation, Superintendent Lowell Larson, Doord of Education Chairmon Dob Lindgren, ond Principal Richard Moos represented Richfield High School. The overwhelming pride felt by them was best expressed by Mr. Moos when he exclaimed, This is one of the greatest championships Richfield hos ever won! Local candidates were brought in ro talk with the students. Public opinion polls showed RHS ro be o student body composed of mostly Democrats. Maybe that showed who should bring their campaigns here? Many students who were in foreign language courses said that speaking more rhan one language “widened” their career possabiliries. Other students said they needed to rake foreign language classes because more and more colleges ore odopring a foreign language requirement. While many students rook a foreign language to furrher their education, other students rook the courses because of rhe “fun things” that go on in rhe classroom. Some of rhe “fun things” were ploying foreign games, attending exrro-curriculor evenrs, and singing songs in a foreign longuoge. Dy doing different things to get away from rhe “hir-rhe-book” routine, teachers hoped to get students more involved in dasswork. Ar RHS some srudenrs faced rhis dilemmo. English as a Second Language (ESL) wos formed ro help srudenrs learn in rheir own language while building rheir skills in English. Srudenrs were placed ar rheir abiliry levels around group rabies ro promore commu-nicarion. These group rabies'' helped form a bond among srudenrs, providing a more relaxed learning environmenr. This relaxed environmenr helped srudenrs rake parr in doss discussions. Alrhough group work os in ESL wos need ed, some RHS srudenrs needed help wirh school-work on an individual level. Sporrs ployed in the foil moy hove included field hockey, flog foorbol, ond soccer. In the winter the offered sports were basketball, badminton, wresrling, fencing, ond archery And in the spring the main activities included track ond softball. Freshmen were required to toke o course m C.P.R and were given the chonce to procrice on special manikins designed for this purpose. There were also elective courses offered for juniors ond seniors, including ream sporrs ond individual activities, ranging from power lifting to slimnosrics. All courses considered, it wos o very enriching program. Some of the units studied were Menrol Heolrh Aworeness, Chemical Dependency, Nurnrionol Needs ond Evaluation of Your Diet, Heart ond Cancer Disease, and Basic Life Support Techniques (C.P.R.) Aworeness. These units provided needed information to the srudenrs obour topics which affected their future lives. This doss wos (a gasp, on ooo, and on ohh) Drivers' Education. Ir wos in this class that students learned how to drive and procedures that they will remember as long as they live. These fears were learned through classroom instruction and rhe use of rhe simulators. Classroom rime consisted of reading from a book; doing a million worksheets, ond seeing films, which illustrated just exactly what the human body looks like ofrer ir has been carapulred through rhe car window ond dragged under rhe cor for 264 feet or 60 mph. Then ir wos on to rhe simulators. (Sometimes referred to by students by another name.) These life-like machines hove certainly influenced rhe driving abilities, in one way or another, of oil who have used them. If rhe student wos able to pass this course, behind-rhe-wheel rroining wos rhe next step. Then on to rhe BIG TEST, and begging mom ond dod for rhe keys every weekend. Of rhese many music dosses, choirs were very popular. The vorious choirs performed concerts inside ond ourside rhe school, while orhers were mainly for developing musical skills in rhe schoolroom. There arc people that could be offended by group prayers because of a different religion or view. I feel kids pray during the day anyway for things like good grades,, get someone’s attention, etc. If people want to pray, they can whenever they want. “Religion should be kept separate from government. That’s what this country is about— Freedom. I think Reagan is more experienced since he is older. I don't think sex is really an issue. I think Bush would make the best President of all the candidates. He has foreign service experience, he is an excellent diplomat, and I believe his business experience would be beneficial to our country. “The age issue has little or no bearing on the race in my mind. As for the religion issue, I think that people should be allowed to pray any time they want (even in school). But they should not set aside a certain time each day for prayer in school. Minnesota businessmen affected by the Twins got together and started to purchase tickets in order to reach the attendance goal. Sellouts were common in June and July. The money was raised, and it looked as though the Twins would stay in Minnesota, but at a freat cost. Then the Buvout came to an end. On July 31, 1984 Carl Pohlad bought 53% of the Twins stock for 27 million dollars, and the long-time owner Calvin Griffin sold out to the Minnesota businessman. Meanwhile, the Twins were having a memorable year. With a team that Griffin hd built, the Twins were leading the American League West as late as August Led by standouts such as runner-up American League M.V.P. No one will ever forget smiling Mary Lou Rclton and her successful attempt for the “10.” Nor will people forget the men’s team, led by Peter Vidmar, in their upset of the favored Chinese and Japanese teams for their first gold medal in 80 years. Also capturing the gold were the U.S. men’s and women’s basketball teams. From wrestling to synchronized swimming to cycling, from Greg Louganis on the diving platform to Joan Benoit in the marathon. Team U.S.A. showed their best. The games of the XXI11 olympiad made more money than any other games, netting over SI 50 million while costing only 5% of the Russian bill. The excellent performances and record attendances really helped to boost American nationalism nad spirit. Grant Comes Back After head coach Bud Grant retired at the end of the ’83 season, many Viking fans despaired. Grant was recognized as one of the most successful and respected coaches in football history.
