Mr Toporas worked at Turbodyne for several years before coming to R.C.S. in 1967. Throughout the years, he patiently worked with students on their math skills. He also was a class advisor and assisted four superintendents. Though Mr T had officially retired from the teaching profession, he never retired as a teacher. He was teaching remedial math at Scio Central School at the time of his death. Students and staff members will always remember Mr. T.'s whistling in the hall and his favorite saying: Scooby-Dooby- Doo. In the morning he would an- nounce that day's menu as The Hillbottom Cuisine ; in the afternoon, he would sing on the p.a. system, The buses are leaving. Goodby; goodbye. The buses are leaving, let's fly; let's fly! Those who worked with Mr Toporas will always be grateful for the effect he had on their educatinal growth and on their lives. MR. ANTHONY TOPORAS On October 28, 1986, former-student Thomas Howard died. Tom achieved many goals while he was a student at R.C.S. He loved sports and played soccer and basketball for four years. He also wrote sports articles for the school newspaper. Tom was a talented musician and performed in the concert and marching bands. He was also selected for the Senior All-County Band and performed in the Solo Festival. Tom was a leader and was elected class president during his sophomore and senior years and class vice-president during his freshman and junior years. He was also co-editer of the yearbook during his senior year. A naturally bright individual, Tom was a diligent student. He was inducted into the Junior National Honor Society and National Honor Society. He received the Baush and Lomb Science Award and was valedictorian of his class. No one will forget Tom's poignant graduation speech. Tom had a wonderful sense of humor and influenced many people's lives. He will remain Always a Friend . A true friend unbosoms freely, advises justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, defends courageously, and continues a friend unchangeably . . Death cannot kill what never dies. Nor can spirits ever be divided that love and live in the same Divine Priniciple. This is the comfort of friends, that though they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are. in the best sense, ever present, because immortal. ' William Penn THOMAS HOWARD 2 Memorials vioiivai SINIIAIQV To The Class of 1987: This yearbook Is as It has been In the past a memory book for you the Senior Class of 1987. It provides a place where In future years you can reflect back to the good times and happy days that vou spent here at Fichburg Central School. You will remember friends, situations and events that took place over the last 13 years: the good times and the sad times. Your education here at Richburg Central School is over now. However, hopefully, you will be able to use the knowledge, ethics, self-discipline and morals you have been exposed to while in attendance here to make your life long and productive. Life will present new problems for you to face each day. You will have many choices to make in how to deal with these situations. If you face these problems with the following thoughts in your mind, I am sure that you will be able to attack the next situation you are confronted with with your head held high. Ask yourself how will my decision affect mv future, my family, my friends, my fellow citizens? Have I looked at not only the short term but also the long term effects of my decision? The staff and faculty wish you a happy, productive and distinguished life. I leave you with these words written in 1911 bv P.S. Reinecke: And when our work is done Our course on earth has run. May it be said, 'Well done Be thou at peace.' Sincerely in Education, CujL v d. Robert L. Klucik Superintendent ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF EDUCATION: Robert Stohr. Jerry Sisson, Winnifred Putnam, Kathryn Griswold, William Locke, Philip Barnes Absent: L. Maurice McCrea Mr Stohr, District Treasurer Mrs. Ueblhear, Deputy Clerk Mrs. Scott. Mrs. Grover, Secretaries Administration 5 RETIREMENTS Mrs. Eva Rae McElroy retired last Fall after twenty years of service to Richburg Central School Mrs. McElroy worked at The Citizens National Bank and First Trust Union Bank before becoming a full-time employee at R.C.S. She worked as an aide with Mrs. Ellabelle Monihan before assuming duties as the full-time guidance secretary. Mrs McElroy was guidance secretary for Mrs Elizabeth Lee, Mrs Ruth Young Mr Stanley Harris, and Miss Betty Pappas during her years of service She provided invaluable assistance to hundreds of students as she made their appoint- ments, gave them financial aid forms, and helped them fill out various form . In addition to these duties, Mrs McElroy was the tax collector and attendance officer. Each year she set up the attendance registers and kept track of thousands of excuses. Even if Mrs. McElroy was at home ill. she kept up with her myriad duties. Not only was Mrs. McElroy a conscientious worker, but she also was a selfless, considerate person. No matter if it was raining or snowing, Mrs. McElroy would go to the bank in Bolivar each day to deposit cafeteria money. She never felt inconvenienced if others asked her to get a card or medicine while she was downtown. She typed resumes and letters for others and even reminded some of her bosses of their anniversaries! Because she saw the good in people, she inspired others to also. We’ll miss seeing Mrs. McElroy's expression of joy as she walked her grandchil- dren down the hall at school. Though she won’t be smiling at us whenever we walk by the guidance office, we ll always feel her presence. MRS. EVA RAE McELROY Mr Robert Umiker retired unceremoniously in June after teaching social studies at R.C.S. for 28 years. Mr. Umiker began his career at Smethport Central School before coming to Richburg. While here, he helped students in many ways. He chaperoned senior trips and directed plays. He also coached basketball for several years. During his tenure, he was vice-principal under two principals Students will always remember the assistance Mr Umiker gave them while preparing for the history regents—and while preparing for life. There weren't many days when he didn't have a philosophical quotation written on the black- board or posted on the doors of his room His immeasurable knowledge benefited both students and staff members. Mr Umiker never called attention to his efforts, but we would like to wish him good luck during his retirement and let him know how much we appreciate the time and work he devoted while nurturing students. She has not only been our English teacher and advisor, but also our friend. We greatly ap- preciate her and would like to thank her for caring so much. She is one of those special teachers who is always there for the students, eager and ready to help. We can't count the number of times we have taken advantage of her gen- erosity. Mrs. Harkenrider is constantly vol- unteering her aid and refusing any credit. We have benefitted tremendously from her guidance and support, and have shared many good times with her. Thank you Mrs. Harkenrider. We all will keep our own spe- cial memories of you! GOOD-BYE Now it's hard Leaving all this behind me now Like a schoolboy so lost Never found until now Yet it's hard Living life on this memory-go-round Always up, always down Turning 'round and 'round And all this could be Just a dream so seems I was never much good at goodbyes Goodbye.
