Student involvement was an important keynote to Student Council policy last year. Under the leadership of President John Brown, a task force was organized to make the best use of student resources. In an effort to improve communications and to boost interest in Student Council projects, all general meetings were opened to any excused student who wished to attend. The Student Council sponsored various activities during the year, including College Night, the Homecoming festivities, and the Charity Drive, the proceeds of which went to aid Pakistani refugees. STUDENT COUNCIL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE A mixture of tradition and innovation marked the progress of the Student Council last year. Innovative programs, such as a student grievance procedure and teacher evaluation, were initiated mainly through the efforts of the Executive Committee. Open meetings, in addition to the daily fourth period session, were held twice a week after school to enable interested students to express their feelings about pending Student Council business or to introduce any new ideas for legislation. On the traditional side, the Executive Committee arranged such annual events as the Homecoming Dance, a night of Tropical Intrigue,” the Pumpkin Carving Contest, and the Charity Drive. In May, the Executive Committee conducted elections for next year’s officers, their final duty. The MCR, a body of representatives from Montgomery County high school student councils, became involved in many controversial issues concerning the student and the school system. Several delegates participated in a joint committee with the County Education Association and tin Council of PTA’s to make recommendations on the proposed policy for evaluating and reporting student progress. Other proposals included standardizing of the 7-period day in all county high schools and establishing a student grievance procedure on a country-wide basis. MCR also sponsored CO AC, the Conference on American Civilization. The annual program of seminars on contemporary topics was held in March at Northwood High School. The Richard Montgomery delegates to MCR were John Brown. Theresa Mosimann. Kathy Sacco, and Leonard Burrelli. 154 • Organizations John Brown, Theresa Mosimann. Kathy Sacco, Leonard Burrelli. Kathy Reed, involved the bard work and talent of many Thespians. The highlight of the year for the troup, however, was the Potpourri Frolic. The annual show, sponsored by the Thespians, starred many talented students and faculty members in a fun-filled evening of music and comedy. In addition, the Thespians again hosted a county-wide forensics tournament in February, concluding a successful season for R.M.’s own contenders. Carol Ratliff on opening night. We were engaged in a great golf match, to test whether Mike Cheripka, or any other R.M. golfer so conceived and so dedicated, could long endure. We were met on a great golf course for that match. We had come to dedicate a portion of that course, as a resting place, where three R.M. golfers lost their golf balls last year. It was altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense, R.M. golfers replaced all divots, let faster players play through, and yielded shade trees to outhouses, for the courtesy of fellow and female golfers. The world will little note, nor long remember what we said there, hut we could never forget, or count, the scores of the returning foursome: last year’s captain, Mike Cheripka. Steve Bruno, Brian Pelnick, and Chuck Will. It was rather for us to have been dedicated to the great task remaining — that from these honored golfers, we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of strokes, that we highly resolved that these golfers should not have played in vain — that the golf team, under coach Mr. Fauley, should have a new tee of memorial — and that the golf team of K.M.. by the golfers and for the golfer should not perish from public golf courses.
