As indi- viduals we met new people, discovered new subiects and won new honors. With the additiornof sixteen new classrooms, many of us enioyed enlarged facilities. After spending four months' attending classes in the auxiliary gym, band room, auto shops and hallways, we were overjoyed as the door to the new wing finally opened. As the year ended, all of us, seniors and underclass- men, looked back on the experiences the doors of R.M. opened to us this year and looked ahead to what other doors would bringkin years to come. av, Table of Contents During the year we walked through many doorways each leading to a new as pect of Infe at Rnchard Montgomery Classes Actsvutues Underclassmen Student Lute Advertnsernents 4 Seniors 19 Sports 53 ' ' . , , , 129 ,df K -i 4 X W4 'Y ' 1 lbiil 3 v ik . sg. - CATHERINE W COCKBURN BA Western Maryland College MA Columbia Umversufy Coun selor LEVIN S COMLY Unlverslfy of Maryland Vlce Prm clpa Mr Glbson begins another busy day ROBERT A GIBSON BS Sprmgfueld College MA Columbla Umverszty Prmcupal KATHERINE B KELLER BS Wilson Teachers College Lu HN. 6 MARK E NEJAKO B S East Stroudsburg State Teach ers College MEd Unlverslty of Maryland Counselor ROBERT H SMITH MEd Unlverslfy of Maryland Vncs-Prmcupal B,A,, Wlaghingfon Cgllegei MUAI, brarianp Library Siaff Club l B-5.1 Unllfefslw of M3fYl5ndi l I ' ' l .' Writing compositions, making oral reports, composing business letters, and reading literature of all types occupied most of our time. Mr. Schneider smiles as P. Best takes over Senior English class for a few minutes. i 5 X Department Honorable opponents, fellow classmates . . . De- bates, demonstration talks, and persuasive speeches made speech class exciting. On the same wing as the speech and English classrooms, the new library is one of Richard Montgomery's greatest assets. The size of the room permits many students to do research, study, read current periodicals, and browse, Several new titles have been added to the catalogue of books to make our library an ever-increasing source of information and pleasure to all of us. Students donning earmuffs and composing their own study tapes enlivened already lively foreign language classes. Using the new tape recorder and microphone sys- tem, Mrs. Pyne and Mr. Wight led us through newly prepared and issued material. From room two twelve floated parts of Cicero's ora- tion against Catiline, spoken by our first Latin III class, sometimes augmented by our Latin II classes and Cae- sar's Gallic Wars. Many of us will not forget .the faculty's enthusiasm which made these languages a part of us. From ninth-grade Civics to twelfth-grade Problems of Democracy, with the intriguing U. S. and World history, world and economic geography in between, we explored old and new ideas. These classes taught by our dedicated social studies faculty provided the background for our more factual understanding of both internal and international affairs. To supplement'the basic course, we saw many interesting and lively films. We spent the year learning about our country and about many foreign countries. From seniors puzzling over lines and spheres to freshmen grasping the fundamentals of business math, we understand and accept the challenge given by our math department. Under the able direction of Mrs. Carpenter, Mr. Hur- ley and Mr. Sacco, the theorems of Plane Geometry be- come familiar helpful friends, iust as the world of in- terest and insurance become familiar to us in business math courses taught by Mr. Hurley and Mrs. Carpenter. New rooms for almost all of us waited at the end of Christmas vacation. Our Biology Department finally had two labs in which Miss Smith, Mr. Ray, and Mr. Tomicheck explained the na- ture of living things to us. Down the hall Nlr. Tomi- check and Mr. Vargo helped us to discover and dis- cuss the many complexities of our scientific world. In the new wing, a shining new Physics lab awaited Mr. Maley's seniors and a new Chemistry lab waited for Mr. Fauly and returning iuniors. The second half of the year found some of us deep- ly engrossed in frogs, ore, steam, and equations, so engrossed that final examinations came and went be- fore we realized that school had ended. Many of us found ourselves in more spacious classrooms and others eagerly prac- ticed on new typewriters. Down the hall, the sounds of new copying and add- ing machines emitted trom our school bank and office practice rooms-with Miss Brown, Mr. Spak, and Mr. Adams directing. We students taking Banking and Of- fice Practice sold pencils, ink and paper in our station- ery store under the supervision of Mr. Finn. In addi- tion to enlarging its stock to include binders and fold- ers, our store had new, earlier hours and an improved cash register. M Students purchase activity cards as school gets under way Department Mr. Finn explained the complexities of Business Lavv to our seniors, while underclassmen probed the basis of the business world in consumer education classes. Preparing for actual office work, shorthand ll stu- dents worked for speed and accuracy, while shorthand I students puzzled over and finally mastered the cryp- tic messages in Gregg's manual. With the help of new machines and classrooms, our commercial faculty and students provided their usual excellent service again this year. Jones, football-playing tomboy, brings laughs in Brother Goose. 'Stude nts mill around a stern patrol during class changes. Through the doors of Richard Montgomery, we un- derclassmen, 850 in number, passed in September. We freshmen tackled new courses, adopted new cus- toms, and solved new problems. Pursuing courses of our election we strove to maintain honor roll grades. We presented the Harvest Hop to boost the figures in our bank account. We sophomores returned to Richard Montgomery's new building to spend a productive year. English, Alge- bra, and Typing occupied most of our time, while we worked toward Honor Society achievement next year. We gave the Sophomore Switch and sold black and gold pens to accumulate funds for the Prom. We iuniors wrestled with the imminent cloud of col- lege, a full-time iob, or domestic life. Some of us reached the goal of National Honor Society for our out- standing grades. Culminating our year with the May junior-senior Prom, we executed our well-planned proi- ect. Emerging a year older, slightly wiser, and more per- ceptive, we closed the door of Richard Montgomery in June. D. Lower, B. White, F. ROCKET ley, D. Lower, P. Stevens, D. Roush. Deadlines December 10, January 24 and March 8 written in easily read script, danced gracefully across our bulletin board. Of course, we noticed the dates but when December ll arrived and untldy mountains of copy for the Senior Section still remained on our desk, Miss Bears began to wonder. The middle of Jan uary found us again surrounded with Senior copy The publishing company had returned the sheets for cor rection. Dauntlessly we righted our mistake Discovering a day' in advance that the Ad Section copy must be submitted for publication Mr Schneider assisted the circulation staff's copywork Unbellevably enough we managed to meet our second deadline with Encountering the usual pitfalls of too little time not enough copy, and a lack of necessary pictures we pro- ceeded to produce the Richard Montgomery Rocket of A. Comly, P. Murphy, R. Hengren, J. Drury, P. K. Collins distributes the Tide at 3:30. Tide Writing stories, soliciting ads, and rushing frantically to Franklin Press captured much of our time this year. More ads, and bigger ones than ever before, covered over one-third of our expenses. With the activity fund, a new proiect, the sale of Rocket iackets furnished the balance. In this year of expansion at R.M., we made many other innovations. We added Fashion Chatter and movie reviews to our feature page. With a poet's cor- ner, we hoped to stimulate student contributions to the Tide. A comic strip featured Joan Kerr's beatniks. Be- sides Senior Snap alternating with Who's Who in Pink and Blue to describe seniors, we wrote articles on outstanding underclassmen. ln these ways Tide grew, to continue to give a comprehensive picture of life in a growing school. Varsity Screaming from the Richard Montgomery football stands, leading lively pep rallies, or traveling forty-odd miles to a basketball game, we yelled the Rockets on to their victories. We want a touchdown! We want a touchdown! echoed the length of the football field many October Saturdays. The Mighty Rockets heeded our call, producing a flawless season and winning the Bi-County Championship. Every other Friday night we spent readiusting the gymnasium rafters. Mr. Gibson appeared at one of these pep assemblies wearing a crepe paper hat streaming our favorite black and gold. Ending up the victorious football season with a ban- quet at the civic centre, we helped the team celebrate. By the middle of December we changed our tune to Make that basket! Make that basket! Practicing three evenings a week we perfected our lumps, formations, and routines for the week-end performances. Best in Bi-County This year, for the first time since i954, the Rockets had a winning season. We won all ten of our games and extended a two-season winning streak to 12 in a row. But most important, we emerged as champions of the Bi-County league. At the beginning of the season we were the team that might win more than it lost, but by the end of the season we were the team ranked fifth in the area and the only team that had a perfect record. We scored five shutouts and allowed our oppo- nents only 56 points while we scored 266 in the ten games. Each of these three are school records. Many individual records also 'fell. Mike Curtis and John Kelly set the most notable ones. Kelly averaged over 45 yards per punt and kicked one 70 yards long. Under the direction of Miss Morrison and Miss Baker, and organized by the members of the Girls' Sports Association, the intramural program provided an excellent opportunity for training girls in teamwork, sportsmanship and playing skills. One of the most popular programs was the badmin- ton tournament. The 90 girls who signed up were grad- ually eliminated from the competition until only the winner remained. White, D. Tucker. Published One word, when spoken, rings ioy in the hearts of hundreds. This one word is NEAP. NEAP, the lowest of the high tides, ranks above all other school periodicals. NEAP is an institution as well as a paper. It is the spirit of light-hearted individualism so typical of the Richard Montgomery Senior Class. The NEAP, when regarded as a publication, is a humorous paper based on school life tinted with all the elements which create humor: satire, ludicrousness, puns, cartoons, and truth. The staff is composed of Bob White, renowned hum- anist, editor, Dick Tucker, most likely to succeed? , as- sistant editor, Paul Wright, Mr. Personality, poet lau- reate, and George Hanratty, Knave at Large. Many other students assist, especially in the field of inspir- ation. The idea of the NEAP began to materialize in 1957, stocks were issued in 1958, it gained widespread recognition in l959, and in l96O, the NEAP controlled the creative thought in Richard Montgomery. Strangely enough, the NEAP manages to infiltrate many school activities. Gr ll9 Beat G-Burg! and Fight! echo through the gym during pep,assem- bly. Partied Joking, dancing and raising the roof, we attended many parties and dances. R.M.'s clubs sponsored vari- ous dances throughout the year. Highlighting the school dances was the Snow Whirl. Never before had the attendance been so large or the decorations so beauti- ful. As enormous, glittering snowflakes danced from the rafters, Bill Earl and his Nightingales provided dance music. The Elwood Smith Teen Center sponsored the beat- est beatnik dance ever. Female beats showed up in tights, long straight hair, black eye make-up and for once no lipstick.
