PAGE QPPG-SJ departed Norfolk, families and friends to join the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY battle group for a routine deployment to the Indian Ocean and intermediate employment with the SIXTHFLT at either end. World events made drastic alteration to our plans. With the U.S. Marines placed in Beirut, Lebanon, a two-carrier battle group posture in East Med was adopted and the PAGEMEN found themselves embroiled in the real world, high-threat environment of those troubled waters for essentially the entire deployment. Tasked within the battle group to perform AAW, ASW and Surface Surveillance, all the PAGEMEN got the chance to shine, and shine they did as their ship prowled The Gap between Cyprus and Syria those many weeks. The reputation we earned was best expressed by Commander Task Force Sixty in his Bon Voyage message to PAGE upon outchop when he said in part, You have been the embodiment of all those desirable characteristics that continue to make our Navy first and foremost. PAGE is welcome in my battle force at any time under any conditions . There were lighter times too - the weeks in Naples for boiler repairs, our visits to Alexandria, Egypt, the relaxed tender availability we enjoyed in La Maddalena, Sardinia, and our visit to Kristiansand, Norway. It provides heating and cooling and allows men to control tremendous amounts of horsepower by simply pushing a button. It gives energy to the many sophisticated computer hardwares that are the eyes, ears and brains of a ship. This power is electricity, the life force of a ship. Being an electricians mate I have the responsibility of maintaining that power. My job requires a thorough understanding of the ships service electrical distribution. Because of the many different applications of electric- . ' n Q s n s b d ity I have a cross rate knowledge of most major fields. Vigilance is a ywor for being the guardian of our ships force. Harsh conditions of shipboard environment can easily cause a casualty resulting in equipment or even personal damage. Through my training and experience as a shipboard elec- trician I can spot potential hazards and eliminate them before they become casualties, This is a continued challenge to my professionalism and keeps my motivation high. After completing repairs on a complicated piece of equipment or just performing PMS gives one the pride of doing a job well done. Best of all is the finding of being a vital member of my ships crew. Indeed, these most visible jobs may at first glance appear to be the back- bone of a fighting ship. Yet a team is only as strong as the in- dividuals who make it, their comfort, morale and general atti- tude is a tremendous factor in their willingness to keep on working hard as each day passes. lt is in this respect that my rate is of great importance to me. A seagoing man whose job actually entails doing the things that a sailor is supposed to do. 'I-ieing knots, splicing wire and line, rigging booms, standing helm and lookout watches and keeping the ship looking shipshape. Not everyone is cut out to be a BM. You will be awakened at all hours of the morning to launch boats, or work long, hard and irregular hours. You must accomplish difficult or your shipmates life depends on your ability to get the job done in the calm seas of the south pacific, or in the seas of a full fledged north atlantic storm. If all these things sound undesirable to you, then a Boatswain's Mate you'll never be. The BM often has to settle for a cold meal because he had to work while the rest of the crew ate a hot one, as it seemed they had nothing better to do. We do that by providing the crew with sufficient time to react against a possible threat and alert- ing other Naval units of enemy intentions. You may ask how is this possible? In brief, Electronic Warfare Techni- cians monitor and survey other units in the vicinity by means of detecting and analyzing the usage of their ra- dars. With the concept, that each radar has a fingerprint, such as each individual person's finger is different. We can obtain identity to a particular class of ship, or air- borne platform and designate the country of origin. We can then provide necessary details to help complete the battle problem picture. EW2 MCPI-IERSON We sit on the surface scope for two hours each, Tracking all contacts that the radar can reach. The airscope we watch with professional cool, The bogeys and the friendlys in an undeclared duel. The DRT is manned every minute of every day, Because we're not in port now, we're underway. We monitor Parkhill with unmatched concentration, aS other US ships report their location, We take fixes twice every hour, We also report if the beaver is sour.
