During our Standing Naval Force Atlantic deployment the crew of RICHARD E. BYRD earned a Sea Service Ribbon for underway time as well as the Battle ED for efficiency for the 18-month competitive cycle ending March 31, 1985. The Shootin', Steamin' Richard participated in numerous successful operations including firing range exercises, submarine hunting, damage control drills, and anti-air warfare. Exercise Bright Horizon was an especially intense drill which was highlighted by coordinated air operations with military aircraft from West Germany, Norway, and Denmark in simulated AAW operations. A simulated exercise was not in the Plan of the Day on May 23 as RICHARD E. BYRD was assigned unscheduled surveillance operations in response to the largest Soviet Task Force to ever deploy from the Mediterranean. RICHARD E. BYRD operated with NATO units for nine days shadowing the Soviet aircraft carrier Kiev in demonstration of NATO's quick response to potential enemy threat. The deployment had its share of relaxation along with the necessary long hours of combat training. RICHARD E. BYRD made 15 port visits during the deployment. The opportunity for travel in Europe was ag much appreciated reward for the hard work completed underway and in port by all divisions on board. All good things must come to an end and on June 30, during our port visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia, RICHARD E. BYRD was relieved as the U.S. NAVY member of SNEI. by USS STEPHEN W. GROVES QFFG-295, signaling the end of Soviet surveillance ops, Joint NATO exercises, and DDG-23,5 participation in the January-July journey. This cruisebook is a multi-threat effort, it serves as a tribute to the sailors, a picture book of port calls and activities, and a reminder of life on board our home away from home, UNITED STATES SHIP RICHARD E. BYRD.
