That phrase describes USS RICHARD E. BYRD perfectly. During our Standing Naval Force Atlantic deployment the crew of RICHARD E. BYRD earned a Sea Service Ribbon for underway time as well as the Battle ED for efficiency for the 18-month competitive cycle ending March 31, 1985. The Shootin', Steamin' Richard participated in numerous successful operations including firing range exercises, submarine hunting, damage control drills, and anti-air warfare. Exercise Bright Horizon was an especially intense drill which was highlighted by coordinated air operations with military aircraft from West Germany, Norway, and Denmark in simulated AAW operations. A simulated exercise was not in the Plan of the Day on May 23 as RICHARD E. BYRD was assigned unscheduled surveillance operations in response to the largest Soviet Task Force to ever deploy from the Mediterranean. RICHARD E. BYRD operated with NATO units for nine days shadowing the Soviet aircraft carrier Kiev in demonstration of NATO's quick response to potential enemy threat. The deployment had its share of relaxation along with the necessary long hours of combat training. RICHARD E. BYRD made 15 port visits during the deployment. The opportunity for travel in Europe was ag much appreciated reward for the hard work completed underway and in port by all divisions on board. All good things must come to an end and on June 30, during our port visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia, RICHARD E. BYRD was relieved as the U.S. NAVY member of SNEI. by USS STEPHEN W. GROVES QFFG-295, signaling the end of Soviet surveillance ops, Joint NATO exercises, and DDG-23,5 participation in the January-July journey. This cruisebook is a multi-threat effort, it serves as a tribute to the sailors, a picture book of port calls and activities, and a reminder of life on board our home away from home, UNITED STATES SHIP RICHARD E. It was disappointing to see friends leave as each ship of the force detached from SN FL enroute to homeport or another assignment, SNFL crew members took each ship's departure from the Force and turned it into a party. The Sailpast tradition was upheld by RICHARD E. BYRD and all the SNFL ships as bluejackets dressed in homespun costumes, waved hand painted signs and banners, and cheered hearty farewells as departing vessels sailed past the remaining Force ships. Sailpast activities included firehose battles, water balloon tossing, shouting matches, and costumed clowning. RICHARD E. Bomb squad investigators said the shots were fired shortly after i3 a.m. and must have exploded in the Tagus Estuary near the ships, which were anchored in Lisbon harbor before heading out to sea for the exercises. r Hours after the explosions, anony- mous cailers telephoned Portugafs state-run news agency Anop and a radio station. Radio Commercial, and claimed the lefiist group, the Popular Forces of April 25, had carried out the action. i J Radio Commercial said it was un- able to iind a note the caller said had been left at a certain location in the Portuguese capital. The three ships targeted inn the attack -- the frigates Arcthusa of Brit- ain, Jan van Braquel' of the Nether- lands and Narvic of Norway -- left the harbor later in the morning to join the maneuvers of NA'I'0's standing naval force in the Atlantic. Capt. Eric Capela, press spokesman at NATO's local command post, said the three ships, along with the USS Richard E. Byrd, the Hamburg of West Germany and the Iroquois of Canada, ina been anchored in Lenoir and Wednesday. o 1 p The Popular Forces claimed re- sponsibility for mortar attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon ion Nov. 25 and a suburban NATO command post Dec.9. ,t y In notes afier the embassy attack, the group said it was protesting Portu4 gal's military ties to theillnited States and NATO.
