?6494t Of .4 Eyed. U88 RICHARD E. BYRD fDDG 231 was built in Seattle. Washington and commissioned on 7 March 1964 in that city. Her homeport was designated as Norfolk. Virginia as a part of Destroyer Division 182. As part of Des Div 188, BYRD made four Slxth Fleet deployments visiting ports in Spain. France, Italy. Malta and Greece. Awards received were the Battle 'E' 619651. ASW A i1969l and Gunnery E 09671. BYRD participated in numerous Fleet exercises including NATO's Silver Tower. National Week. Operation Poopdecit and Springboard dur- ing which she rescued a downed pilot. In 1967 BYRD represented the UB. Navy in the Mardi-Gras in Sit-lbllt',AldbBI11d. ln early 1968 she entorod the Nor- folk Naval Shipyard for her flrst complete overhaul. In July 1969 BYRD shlfted squadrons to Destroyer Squadron TWO ae part of Division 22. During the fall of 1989 sho partlolpated In Mldshlprnan Rlmex II-70 and the dedication uf Richard Bwlyn Byrd Hall at Virginia Institute of Marine Science. During 1970 BYRD partlclpated ln Sprlngboard prlor to startlng her fifth Med deployment. While ln the Slxth Fleet BYRD took part ln exercises Dawn Patrol. National W'eok and Deep Express. The countries of Bardlnla and Turkey were added to her llst of countrles vlslted. Awards received were 1'I 's ln C1C.Gunnery. Mlaslle. ASW A , Engineer- lng and Supply. Ill 1971 BYRD'l second shlpyard period was completed and she commenced an lntenslfled work up with Destroyer Dlvlalon B9 for her sixth Fleet deployment. Yugoslavia was added tu B YRD's schedule along with numerous exercises. Upon return to the U.S.. BYRD became a major platform for tralnlng various elements lnrludlng Mldshlpmen and Destroyer School Department Heads. During the latter she visited llallfu. Nova Scotia. Spring brought on two LAN- TREADEX and a Sea Consx as preparations were made for her next deployment. Awards recelved were Battle E , Mlssle E , CIC E and Top Shooter ln LANTREADI-ZX thus establishing her nlcltname as The Shootlng Richard . Durlng her seventh Med trlp. BYRD participated ln Exercises Mag-lc Sword i0 and Swift Move. Upon departure from the Med a port call In Edlnburg, Scotland was curtailed ln order for the ship to return to the Med to partlclpate ln Mlddls East Contlngsncy Ops. BYRD returned to the U.S. In December of 1973. Early 74 brought exsrclse Springboard and a Destroyer School Dept. Head cruise followed by the MPA School and Protra Mldsx 74. W l Commander Theodore R. KRAMER was born September 28. 1934, ln Greensboro. North Carollna. He was graduated from the U.B. Naval Academy. Annapolis. Maryland and commissioned Ensign June 7. l967. He served aboard USS NEWMAN K. PERRY KDDR-883D from August 1957 to May 1960 as Gunnery Officer. In May 1900, fLTjll KRAMER became a student at the George Washington University School of Engineering before reporting for duty the next year as Instructor ln Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at the U.B. Naval Academy. Following two year of thls duty, LT KRAMER reported to Subu- Bay RP. tu the Staff of the Commander, Amphlbloua Group One-Amphibious Force. SEVENTH Fleet ae Alde and Flag Lieutenant to the Commander. During thla tour. LT KRAMER participated ln the flrlt and three other amphlbloul operations on the coast of the Republlc of Vletnam. LT. KRAMER3 next aulgnment was that of operations omc-er aboard USS DEWEY KDLG-10 ln Norfolk. Vlrflnla. ln March 1967. LCDR KRAMER then reported to the Staff. Commander Naval Forces. Vietnam where he aerved a year ln the oapaclty of Head ol the Navy Operatluns Center. Returning to the United States ln March 1968, LCDR KRAMER became a member of the Polltlcalvhillltary Divlslon, Studies Analysis and Gaming Agency. 0fKlDlllll0hl of the Joint Chllfl of Staff and served ln the JCB until ordered to report aboard the gulded mlule frlgate. WILLIAMH. STANDLIY, Mayport. Florida. CDR KRAMER assumed the dutlea of Exerutlve Offlcer on 21 December 1971 and eerved aboard untll 30 March l974, CDR KRAMER la married to the former Dorothy N.
