The team was handicapped to some extent by lack of experienced men at the opening of the season, and the Korean crisis re- sulted in a number of premature enlistments and actions which were disastrous to the team. Considering their lack of reserve and experience the team played good ball as a whole-but their opponents played better. The result was South- western's first poor basketball season in a number of years. Any chance the team had of salvaging their record Was lost when the schedule was can- celled. However, the ability of some of the boys deserves praise. Veteran guard Roy Gwin turned in out- standing performances and proved to be the co- hesive force of the team. Center lohn Austin could effectively control most of the rebounds, but the team as a whole was handicapped in this respect, as there were no other tall men o nthe team to give Austin the needed support. im 3 NNN e1fmi5- QW Although neither the Tennis team nor the Golf team has com- pleted their schedule as The Lynx goes to press, the Spring Sports program at Southwestern promises to be successful. The Golf team has defeated Lambuth and Wabash by decisive margins while they dropped close matches to Ole Miss, Mem- phis State, and Wisconsin. The busiest man on the campus during the Spring Sports season was Ted Fox who played in number three position for the Lynx Linksters and in number one position on the tennis team. Playing, and winning a golf match in the morning and then making a fast change for a tennis match in the afternoon is no mean feat, but Fox accomplished it on more than one occasion. The tennis team standing as The Lynx goes to press is five wins balanced by five losses with four matches yet to be played. The Southwestern baseball team got off to a com- paratively slow start being handicapped by a short pitching staff and lack of an experienced catcher. Gerry Bugbee was transferred to catcher from his outfield position and under the conditions has played excellent ball. Billy foe Crisamore, another outfielder, also saw action behind the plate. Of the pitching staff a freshman, lohn Dillon, was the most promising. Much to the discomfort of the opposition he was a master of the curve ball and turned in several fine performances before the sea- son was over. The mainstays of the infield were the men flank- ing the keystone bag, shortstop Al Boyd and sec- ond baseman Bill Sparks. Both men played con- sistently good ball all season. Coupled with the hardworking centerfielder-catcher Billy Ioe Crisa- more, they deserve much credit for providing the team with the experience and competitive spirit it needed.
