To the class of 1960, Rex Hospital School of Nursing, this was August 27, 1957. That was the day that fifty-four of us left our homes and families to pursue our nursing careers. We did not have long to think of being homesick. After a few days of orientation, we plunged into classwork. Our class was organized and our officers elected. How proud we were when we donned our blue striped dresses and white aprons for the first time. At last, after weeks of study and practice, our reward came in November when we were allowed to go to the hospital to arrange flowers and take temperatures. In December we were rewarded with a week of vacation and several days of hospital work. After many more months of practice on Miss Chase, examinations, and tests, a happy group of girls received their caps at White Memorial Presbyterian Church on May 30, 1957. This was a time of happiness and also one of tears, as we realized that there were some who were with us at the beginning who were not in our number now. We finally became a part of the hospital roster and began our many months of work. We saw a new addition to our hospital in the form of a new laboratory and X-Ray department that summer. More vacations and happy times followed. How we looked forward to our junior year. Two more years to go! This year was filled with classes and much hospital work for us.We began our special services, and in May the first group from our class went to Dorothea Dix Hospital for our Psychiatric training. The highlight in our social life this year was our junior-Senior banquet and dance. Many of us spent long and happy hours working to make this a success. On August 11, 1959, we were duly rewarded when we received those coveted black bands to brighten up our white caps. We really wore them with pride. Only one more year to go! Our one goal at this time was to graduate. Our senior year saw many of our classmates getting married and starting their families. Some of them dropped out during this year. Finally the long awaited day arrived. On August 19, 1960, we were graduated from the Rex Hospital School of Nursing. This was one of the happiest moments of our lives. After graduation, many of our classmates would be separated. Some would be staying at Rex, others going to such places as California and Virginia to work, and others going into the armed forces. When we look back upon these three years of our lives, we will remember the wonderful friendships that have been formed and we will always be grateful to our parents, friends, in- structors, doctors, and all of those people in each of our lives, who have helped to make these three years possible. And now, on to State Boards! Respectfully submitted FRIEDA WIERSE, Class Historian u. gx 'QW-any 40- 5 f , ' X n ,,,..-T , ' ' fe Q class poem Vigor, vitality, vim and punch- That's the student nurse ! The courage to act on a wdden hunch- That's the student nurse! The nerve to tackle the hardest thing, With feet that climb, and hands that cling, And a heart that never forgets to sing- That's the student nurse! Sand and grit in a concrete base- That's the student nurse ! Friendly smile and an honest face- That's the student nurse ! The spirit that helps when another's down, That knows how to scatter the blackest frown, That loves its neighbor and loves its town- That's the student nurse. To say I will - for you know you can- That's the student nurse! To meet each thundering knockout blow, And come back with a laugh, because you know You'1l get the best of the whole show- That's the student nurse. The babies are sleeping, the mothers are sleeping, the aides are sleeping and so are the internes. You wonder about me I'm on night duty fDum De Dum Dumj for the thirty-fifth week. I can't sleep. The notice on the bulletin board plainly says so. l'll turn the notice over and catch a few winks anyway. ' It is 3:09 1X2 A.M. There's a crash outside. I jump over the bassinets and run to the window. CLARA WILSON Qdriving her new Catj just collided with PAT MULCAHA'S MG. Pat is uninjured. She is still upstairs counting the numbers of bottles with Mrs. Story-Can't decide which color to send downstairs. QDum De Dum DumJ. The only part of the car we can salvage is the radio. It's going full blast with Hami1ton's new program, Don't Step on My Toes, starring JUDITH CASTLEBERRY singing My Feet Are Too Large. Followed by MARTY BURTON'S One Hundred and Twenty Questions. 3:15 A.M. There is another loud crash! It's JEANIE JOHNSON, who just dropped everything, including a retractor she was holding for Dr. Neal, and struck out for a sale she just heard about in Gerner. Everything reduced half price. She never misses one. fDum De Dum Dumj My nerves are shattered! I turn the dial. It is 3:36 A.M. One of MARTHA TRIPP'S Rock and Roll Programs is on the air.The program is interrupted by a news flash-three patients just escaped from Dix Hill. The catasimophy has the new supervisor, VERCIE ELLER, standing on her he ad. Just as I thought, she's crazy about her work. fDum De Dum Dumj An ambulance just drove up. BETTY COBBS is at the wheel. Her assistant SANDRA PARKER, is flaked out in the rear. What happened? A bedpan fell on her head dropped by ANN LANGSTON. I picked up a newspaper lying in the foot of the ambulance. On the front page in bold p 'nt I read that JEAN LINTHICUM is trying for the fourth time to swim the English Channel.Keep up the goodwork, Jean ' m De Durn Dumj 3:41 A.M. I still can faintly hear that blasting radio. The announcer stated that MARY PARKER and VIRGINIA HOLLOMAN would be singing in New York for the next two weeks- none other than Opera. I was so sleepy when I heard the next programs would be sponsored by FRANCES BRADSHER now Mrs. Nordan on Understanding Hus- bands and Good Child Care What a Scream! ! She helps Johnnie drive a milk wagon-To show my appreciation I climb in beside her. She really tells me all the news. 5:35 A.M. We pass a little woman sitting on the curb-who is that? It is MTS.
