Cfafm .jskafory The day was August 29, 1956. The Rex Hospital School of Nursing enrolled fifty-six girls exuberant with anticipation. The heavy schedule and the many en- joyable activities kept us occupied and soon all feelings of homesickness faded into the background. Along with the title pre-clinicals, we received our uniforms and wore them proudly. After many weeks of practicing on poor old Mrs. Chase is Nursing Arts, we began working on the wards. Following nine long months of theory and clinical practice, we received our caps on June 1, 1957, at White Memorial Presbyterian Church. We regretfully remembered sixteen girls who had returned home and did not have the chance to share that wonderful experience with us. The summer meant more work for us on the wards and each day we tried a little more to become better nurses. As autumn approached, we became Juniors. This was an interesting year as we remember those days on special services, such as the Diet Kitchen, Operat- ing Room, Recovery Room, and Obstetrics. We enjoyed planning the Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance. It was amazing how we made money sponsoring a movie, white elephant sale, and the sock hops. ln the fall of 1958, we received our black bands, classifying us as Seniors. For some this was the beginning of their affiliation at State Hospital, while others were venturing in the Emergency Room, the Out-Patient Clinic and Pediatrics. The day was June 5, 1959, graduation day. Forty-six girls marched down the aisle of Occidental Life Insurance Building to receive their diplomas. This was the day which all of us had anticipated for many years, but we all realized it would soon be a memory. As we look back over the past three years of our lives, no one can say that this experience has not been difficult. Like all worth-while things, the cost seems little when compared with self-realization which has made it possible. Respectfully submitted, Melba Farrow, Historian i281
