This work I undertake Alone in Thy great name, and for Thy sake. Take them, mine eyes, and teach them to perceive The ablest way each sick one to relieve Guide Thou my hands, that e'en their touch may prove The gentleness and aptness born of love. Bless Thou my feet, and while they softly tread - May faces smile on many a sufferer's bed, Touch Thou my lips, guide Thou my tongue, Give me a word in season for each one. Clothe me with patient strength all task to bear, Crown me with hope and love, which know no fear And faith, that coming face to face with death Shall e'en inspire with joy the dying breath All through the arduous day my actions guide All through the lonely night watch by my side. So shall I wake refreshed, with strength to pray: Work in me, through me, with me, Lord, this day! l8l - - - -Author Unknown ,.,f Q- ,Q ' 224 QQ .W -2 X, 5 ,EQ-1313 . But, offlcer we dldn t Cfafm .jskafory The day was August 29, 1956. The Rex Hospital School of Nursing enrolled fifty-six girls exuberant with anticipation. The heavy schedule and the many en- joyable activities kept us occupied and soon all feelings of homesickness faded into the background. Along with the title pre-clinicals, we received our uniforms and wore them proudly. After many weeks of practicing on poor old Mrs. Chase is Nursing Arts, we began working on the wards. Following nine long months of theory and clinical practice, we received our caps on June 1, 1957, at White Memorial Presbyterian Church. We regretfully remembered sixteen girls who had returned home and did not have the chance to share that wonderful experience with us. The summer meant more work for us on the wards and each day we tried a little more to become better nurses. As autumn approached, we became Juniors. This was an interesting year as we remember those days on special services, such as the Diet Kitchen, Operat- ing Room, Recovery Room, and Obstetrics. We enjoyed planning the Junior-Senior Banquet and Dance. It was amazing how we made money sponsoring a movie, white elephant sale, and the sock hops. ln the fall of 1958, we received our black bands, classifying us as Seniors. For some this was the beginning of their affiliation at State Hospital, while others were venturing in the Emergency Room, the Out-Patient Clinic and Pediatrics. The day was June 5, 1959, graduation day. Forty-six girls marched down the aisle of Occidental Life Insurance Building to receive their diplomas. This was the day which all of us had anticipated for many years, but we all realized it would soon be a memory. As we look back over the past three years of our lives, no one can say that this experience has not been difficult. Like all worth-while things, the cost seems little when compared with self-realization which has made it possible. Testator, Vikki Teague Wittnessesg Sylvia Boyd, President of Senior Class Charles R. Gilliam, Annual Advisor l39l gfadri p 0l0AeCg The sun was shining and a breeze was blowing on the morning of June 6, 1964, as Istepped aboard a 'l',W,A, airliner at the Raleight-Durham Airport. Soon I would be returning to my home in the sunshine state of Florida. As the plane glided down the runway Isettled back for a long ride. Up into the sky we climbed and leveled out onto a soft blue velvet carpet. My mind began to wonder as I looked around in that wide open space. Sprinkled around on the blue carpet the clouds formed tiny white caps ---- white caps. The words kept ringing in my mind as I remembered the anticipated day back in Nurses' Training when we received those precious white caps. Last night I attended a five year reunion of my graduating class at Rex Hospital School of Nursing, and was now well filled in on all the events of the past years. Rosemary D'Angelo is owner and manager of a Spaghetti House up in the Bronx, New York. Reservations have to be made months in advance. The former Jo Anne Baker surprised us all by finally marrying Felton after three previous engagements. Maybe she isn't so fickle, after all. Ruth Council entertained us with an aura from an opera in which she starred two weeks previously. There were many other celebrities among my former classmates. Nancy Boyette was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, -S-Q la-Q Cathy Wood was so excited about the opening of her art gallery where she is featuring her latest painting, Angel's of Mercy. Escorted by her husband, Nancy Holt was wearing an exquisite gown which she designed. She 's putting Dior out of business. Carol Spivey has taken Broadway by storm because of her magnificent performance in The Wit . Also from the literary world, the former Judy Evans told us she takes time out from her busy family schedule to write an Advice to the Lovelorn Column. A few of us remained faithful to the old alma mater. Margie Hall is now work- ing for Drs. Hamilton and Neal, and Myrtle Henderson raved about her new position as Dr. Valone's favorite scrub nurse. Marion Mann is Supervisor in the OR and Melba Farrow is new President of the Rex Alumni Association. Her platform was no 3-ll for students. Sue Britt retired from the nursing profession to manage her Raleigh factory which produces hair nets since the new Director of Nurses' at Rex, Cathy Hamm, requires all students to wear them. Several girls settled down to married life. Kay Yates and Jacque Smith are living in Apex and increasing the population by leaps and bounds. Gloria and George Herring were showing off their t.hree'year old future seaman. Peggy Aber- nathy, Phyllis Gahagan, Jane Smith spent a great deal of time discussing the antics l40l of healthy 6 and 7 year olds and their favorite pediatricians. Ann Watson and Ralph were recently married and started house keeping with a well stocked hope chest. Ann Williams and Helen Gay have additions to their families and are living a life of leisure as homemakers. Rosa Mangum arrived with a new car--seems she decided to get her drivers' license. Glenda is married after three years of being pinned and an extended engage- ment, She's looking forward to moving to South America where Fred will be working, Lynn and Helen, Fowler and Sutton to us, were there with their new husbands. After years of indecision, they roped two millionaires from Texas. The former Helen Mullen is doing supervisory work in a Texas hospital while she waits for Jerry to come in from flights. Willa and Max were enthusiastic about their trip to Europe where they visited relatives and Tremilla and Roger Newby. Roger's still faithful to Uncle Sam and is enjoying his tour of duty in France. I was so happy to hear that Arleen Lloyd had re- ceived the Purple Heart for bravery beyond the call of duty, Judy Smithwick, over- come by her love for the sea, has a position on the famous Queen Mary . Ann Faison retired and moved to California. Five years on Third East was too much for her. All of us didn't leave the good Ole' North State. Sandra and Roy decided they liked N.C. better than Deleware. Nancy Matthews is industrial nurse at Leggett-Meyers in Durham. No more cigarette worries. Janice and John Dunn decided to make their home in Bear Grass. She's head basketball coach there, Vikki and Jobie are back in Waynesville where Vikki is knit- ting little socks and is the perfect picture of a lady in waiting , Betty and Edwin HTC married but Still CHi0YiHg those fabulous week-ends at Carolina. Linda and Dorisanne share an apartment in Raleigh. They are both sporting beautiful engage- ment rings and just bubbling over with wedding plans. Barb and Anita were unable to attend the reunion since they pooled their resources and took that long awaited trip to Bermuda. The plane tilted a little and I was brought back to reality by the voice of the airline hostess, Sylvia Boyd, reminding me to fasten my seat belt. As Isaw the ground slowly coming up to meet us the beautiful white caps took their places in the back ground. The reasons fall from my lips I admire thee for thy beauty of face Iadmire thee for thy movements ofgrace Thy loving kindness, tender care The faith you place in fervent prayer lnspires me to a height I never dreamed of coming near You set your sights in Heaven and by a star you steer Isee thy neatness, thy efficient ways Thy cheerful smile which lifts the haze Of loneliness and pain upon the halls Thy quiet confidence which never falls. My admiration rises when Isee The friendliness you show to ones like me And yet you set example for us, too, And I suppose You have your times of loneliness and fear But it never shows And thy purpose always seems quite strong and clear.
