WALKING WITH GOD To be a nurse is to walk with God Along the path that our Master trod To soothe the aching of human pain, To faithfully serve for little gain, To lovingly do the kindly deed-- A cup of water to one in need, A tender hand on the fevered brow, A word of cheer in the living now. To reach the soul through the body's woe-- As, this is the way that Jesus would go. O white--capped girls, with hearts so true, The Great Physician is working through you --Author Unknown 2 Q W 1 , '41 54, WL Qs , I 1 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the seniors of Rex Hospital, being of sound heart, weak brain, and lame feet, do hereby bequeath, bestow, or just plain give away our most priceless possessions. ARTICLE I To our dear Alma Mater we hereby leave a will for Sl, 000,000,000 in hopes that in the future they will be able to overcome all their financial difficulties. ARTICEL VII To the incoming freshmen we leave stiff necks--you'll get them anyway from looking up to the seniors. The following people leave their most valuable traits to the school and underclassmen: Ruth Veit leaves her mile-long words to anyone who has a couple of unabridged dictionaries. Nan Dickens leaves her loud mouth and jokes to Mae Holder. Rose Hawks leaves her let's go someplace to Linda Lee. Jean Honeycutt leaves her dancing ability to Jessie Williams, Jean White leaves her scrapbook for anyone lucky enough to catch a design student. Emily Francis is just happy to leave for New Jersey. Miriam Farmer leaves her last minute scurrying to Mary Farrior. Sarah Adams leaves one of her picture hats to Miss Collie. Anne Broadhurst leaves her hospital bedg but oh, so reluctantly. Rachel Desern leaves Rex happily to make abetter home for Tookie . Joan Barnett leaves her soprano voice as a treasure to Rex. Vivian Brooks leaves a second thought and a brain wave to anyone who thinks nursing is a crip course for undecided girls Joyce Anderson leaves pharmacology ----- thank goodness! Jean Baker leaves her smile and personality to Barbara Bennett. Patsy Sholar leaves her prettiness to Pat---thank you! Elaine Phlegar leaves the phone booth to get a private one of her own. 30 Barbara Pearce leaves her ability to be faithful to one man to Pat Pridgen. Alice Smith leaves her Unexpected remarks , -X! Bobby won't let her take them with her, Esther Bradberry leaves her love for rock and roll music to Martha Griffin. Susan Taylor leaves her aquarium and a bag of Vigoro to Judy Rea, Iris Phillips leaves her vim-vam-vigor to the junior class. Marie Spence leaves her cross-word puzzles to Jo Ann Mitchell. Barbara Hill leaves her diet charts to any person overweight. Rachel Abbott leaves her love entanglements at State Hospital to no one but herself. Violet Sowers leaves her love for ambulance drivers to become an embalmer. Virginia Floyd leaves her ability to get along with the big wheels to Estelle Kleinert. Ina Tart leaves Rex---to go wild! Ellen McLawhon leaves her Oriental eyes and nickname Smoochy to Dr, Allen. Elizabeth Scull leaves her prompt report to work each day to Judy Buck. Joyce Keel leaves her sexy ways to Roseanne Arena. Nancy Futch leaves N.C. State's basketball team to join the bench with the goodlooking football players. Nancy Watson leaves her slow Southern drawl OJ to Cleone Ellis. Joyce Priest leaves all the left-over carbons for next year's annual staff. Nettie Moore leaves her job as bucketholder for Dr. Plonk to some poor junior. Peggy Britt leaves her athlete's foot to whoever wears a number ll. Betty Baskett leaves her place on the roof for the birds??????? Betty Capps leaves those midnight, let's bop parties , to any member of the Nocturnal Birds who doesn't need the beauty sleep. We, the Senior Class of 1957, in witness hereof, declare this to be our last Will and Testament. . . Testator, Betty Jane Capps 31 THE CLASS PROPHECY After ten years, lhave finally found my magic stethoscope and OH! What Iheard! The lives of thirty seven old classmates boomed forth in unmistakable tones. Emily Francis forsook THE profession to become one of the better-known women lawyers. Ihear she stands a good chance of winning the one million dollar alimony Nancy Futch is demanding in her latest divorce proceedings. lust between us, I think she 'll drop the whole thing as soon as Whitey breaks down and buys that mink coat she's had her eye on. From the sounds of things, Peggy Britt is going places fast with her new television program, PEGGY'S POT , on which she teaches young house wives to cook. She and John have just returned from a tour of Canada. Don't think all the crew gave up nursing, Iris Phillips and Betty Capps are tied for supervisory positions in Chapel Hill, the opening being made by Alice Smith, who finally got Bobby through school with a degree, PhD, , that is, Barbara and Herbert are enrolling Number 4 in the first grade this year. Barbara is doing private duty in Goldsboro so she can work the hours she chooses, -ten to three, with an hour off for lunch. Lib Scull went by Iowa to pick up Jim on her way to Alaska, where they're planning to open a first aid station known as THE LAST OUTPOST , The last I heard of Joyce Priest was when she was in Chicago. Now, l don't know whether it was with Joe who could possibly have been enroute between stations, or John, who should be in school there about this time. Rachel Abbott Altman and husband Billy have really set Dix Hill straight--she being Director of Nurses and he, President of the newly formed society D.C. O. 'S . It's coming in slowly but I believe that Ed and Betty Hicks are the proud parents ofa bouncing baby boy. This is their first and they had the hardest time finding a good nurse for Little Ed, however Marie Spence flew in from the middle west where she has made quite a name for herself in the field of preemies . We all have dreams of traveling some day, but Virginia Floyd is riding on Cloud No. 7 , a car especially designed for her by hubby Richard, wealthy railroad executive. It didn't look like county come to town when Elaine Williams flew into New York with a signed check from Gene to pick up her summer wardrobe. And where else would she make such a fabulous purchase but BAB'S , an elite dress shop owned and operated by Barbara Pearce. Violet Sowers' success story stems from a portrait Bob entered at a photographer's convention in Chicago in 1960. Since that time she has been seen on such famous covers as Nursing Today , and The Spirits of Nursing . Jean and Austin Baker are very well off from what Ihear. Aside from the fact that he has made plenty as an Army officer, Jean has mopped up during their travels by lecturing under the title of National Director for Student Nurse Recruiting. We knew her interest in this field would carry her far. Disappointed in love, Ellen McLawhon packed her knap-sack and moved to darkest Egyptand wrote one of the greatest novels of all times, MEN . The only objects responsible for her returning to civilization was her Florence Nightingale lamp, a package of Winston's, and the hope that someday, another Perky would come along. One of Altanta's most entertaining socialites, Nancy Lou Fox, had President and Mrs. Graham Farmer as house guests last week. Miriam and Nancy had a grand time discussing the good old days . 32 Most Likely to Succeed Joyce Keel lived up to her title when she was recently named Director of Nurses at dear old Rex, She was unanimously elected when she announced that her platform would be every other weekend off for the students. Nannie Dickens has been in Burlington ever since graduation making the perfect wife for Don. She is working on Pediatrics in the local hospital. Vivian Brooks is working at a plush sanatorium in Florida where she is compiling material for her latest book, T. B. OR NOT T. B..THAT IS CONSUMPTION. Patsy Sholar doesn't stay in one town long enough to get a position in a hospital. Pat became auditor for some Eastern trucking firm. She is doing rather well as Fuller Brush Girl, though. Troy could never have made a go of his funeral home if Rose Hawks hadn't married him and started driving an ambulance for him, which just goes to show that a good nurse can adjust herself to any situation, even to the extent of talking the Raleigh patrolmen out of speeding tickets. One would think after ten years of morning coffee and afternoon bridge Esther Bradberry and Susan Taylor would tire of such a life of ease, but keeping house in their spare time breaks the monotony. Tommy and Eddie are co-owners of the big red and white filling station on Hillsboro Street. Nettie Ruth Hagwood drops in on them occasionally to pass on some trash she picked up over at Rex where she 's doing a fine job of holding down the emergency room. Any sunny day usually finds Harold playing golf out at R. G. A., but with his favorite caddy, the former Ioan Barnett, on O. B., he's pacing the floor up there. Ina Tart can thank Joan for introducing her to a wealthy Elonite who has made her slightest wish his command. Rachel and Tookie Desern packed the kids in the car and took off for a weekend to visit Jean Carol and Dave Hall. Determined to teach her children the value of a dollar, Jean Carol is helping them with a hot dog stand at Coney Island. Sarah Russell postponed remodeling their home in Tennessee long enough to follow Kent to Italy. She never dreamed the ritzy hotel she stayed in was one of a chain belonging to Anne Carol and Vince Vital. The cunning of a fox is not surpassed by Jean Honeycutt who has a certain State College student thinking she was positively not interested in matrimony till he popped the question. Just for kicks, think l'll misplace this stethoscope for another ten years and see what has taken place. Then l'll see if Joyce Anderson is still the luckiest of all, for you see l am an American in Africa with the Preacher' of course . CLASS HISTORY Remember how we have looked forward to the time when we could fill out our MONTHLY RECORDS-- Class of '57, 1957. No longer do we look forward to this but now we are planning for our future jobs as graduate and registered nurses. Our nurses' training at Rex is nearly over. Three years ago on September 1, 1954, sixty of us arrived at Rex Nurses' Home very much unaware of what the future held in store for us. This was indeed a new life. We were branded with the name Probies and truly we lived up to this name with our many innnocent yet dumb questions. The first nine months was made up almost entirely of classes. We had to learn different terminology, a language almost foreign to most of us, to be able to understand the lectures. Many nights the midnight oil was kept burning in preparation for classes on the following day. Then came the morning we donned our uniforms for the first time to go over to the hospital to give our first A. M. care. That was the beginning of our hospital duties and we will long remember the time we took giving our first bed bath. Probably the most exciting and one of the most impressive days of our life was May 27, 1955, the day we received our caps in White Memorial Church. This was a day long anticipated, and we wore our caps with pride. We were no longer Probies ! Our Junior year was the longest. We did not have capping to look forward to and graduation was just too far off. Our time was divided into going to class and work in the hospital. This was also the time some of us started our special duties. The operating room was one place we all had anticipated with wonder and awe. Now some of us were actually part of the operating team. It was different, exciting, and an interesting leaming experience. Others were in the recovery room, the dietary department, obstetrics, and still others were learning to do general duty in the hospital. On August 25, 1956, we received our black bands. At last, we were SENIORS! We were now at the top of the ladder, Our duties on pediatrics, the clinic, and the emergency room began, also our three months over at State Hospital of which we were all a little wary. Needless to say we have enjoyed it and feel we have gained much from the experience. There have been many events other than hospital duties to brighten the years. We have had dances in the nurses' home, and we have attended dances away from the nurses' home. Our Junior-Senior banquets, both our years as hostesses and as guests were important dates for us. The Platter Parties over at State were very much fun for those who attended. The Square Dancing classes every Thursday night proved a very good outlet for our repressed feelings. During the first year our Glee Club had many singing dates engagements in Raleigh and away from Raleigh. Even though some of us couldn't sing we enjoyed the trips. Those boxes of food arriving from home, all those parties we had in the middle of the night! We really crowded Pebble Beach when the summer sun started shining. Some of us even managed to get suntans too, along with the time we spent at the pool. Some know these tans proved extremely sore and painful too. Rememberl? As we all know these are only a few of the things we have enjoyed doing together, but we all have our own little memories. Now we are graduating! June 7, 1957, is an important date to us and one that we will never forget. There are thirty seven of us now. Some have gone to take on new responsibilities as wives and mothers, some just didn't like it here, and others could not quite make it. We wish you all were here now to share our achievement and satisfaction but we know you must be happy wherever you are. As we graduate and take our different paths, we will always remember the three years at Rex and the very close friends we have made. No matter where we may be, our Nursing Profession shall bind us as one and we will be inseparable in our thoughts and memories.
