' if-ik QLULQ9 HISTDRY The flame begins to flicker, to die away and as the end of the day draws near I sit down to reminisce. A soft sigh escapes me as I think of the love and laughter, tears and joys spent in three years of close association with you, my friends. We were like new candles with beaming faces as we entered the nurses home on this day, September 7, 1950. Beaming, yes, but also a slight tremor could be noted as we realized the immensity of the task we were undertaking. We were greeted with a warm welcome and shown to our rooms where we first encountered our roommates and life-long friends. Never shall we forget our first trip to the dining hall where the strange faces and white uniforms brushed past with the unfamiliar swiftness which we later realized was symbolic of the profession we had entered. It didn't take long to fit into the pattern of a burning candle, slowly, surely burning on. Now we were having classes, along with our experience in the hospital. Then came February 16, 1951, the day we had longed for. As the whiH of the wind would brighten the light of a candle, so this day was brightened by the presentation of caps, which climaxed our pre-clinical period and sent us off for our first vacation-one week! A return from vacation and we were well on our way into our Freshman year which was not too eventful, but still full of studies and work. Still under close supervision of our instructors, we were skillfully guided into our Junior year which was filled with plans for the Junior-Senior, selling hot dogs, sponsoring movies and selling candy. Even more important than this was the fact that we were beginning to separate to go into our special assign- ments. Some were off to O. R., some to O. B., and some to State Hospital. Then came the gala event-our Junior-Senior which was held at the Woman's Club, music by Woody Hayes. Even through our happiness came a spark of sad- ness because we were bidding our Seniors farewell and the faint strains of Goodnight Ladies proved to be a final touch. Let us not forget our informal but impressive ceremony June 8, 1952 when our big sisters pinned our black bands on our caps to designate us as Seniors. Our Senior year was filled with many hours of work which was brightened by many unforgettable high-lights of graduation. We all enjoyed a nice dance at the Raleigh Country Club given us by the Junior Class, May 22, 1953. The date had been set-! The Baccalaureate sermon was delivered Sunday morning, May 31, 1953, at Edenton Street Methodist Church and Graduation exercises were held at Meredith College Auditorium June 5, 1953. The flame has lighted our paths with a bright glow through our three years here at Rex. As it flickers briefly on the shadows we cast as we go through the door to the future, the class turns in deepest appreciation to -our two sponsors, Miss Rebecca Perry and Dr. Alfred T. Hamilton, who have always been there with a helping hand. The flame is dying now, but we can still see in our minds the 54 frightened girls who entered training and the 31 women who leave. Testator. 35 CLASS PROPHESY September 7, 1963 Dr-:AR DIARY, Today I attended the reunion of the 1953 Class of the Rex Hospital School of Nursing, my old Alma Mater. It was really amazing to see the matamorphosis undergone by my classmates and to learn of the different places they have picked in life. Rex has national accreditation now. Part of the hard work was done by Barbara Cheek, Addie Williamson, Louise Stancil, Dorothy Blackman, and Jeanette Norman. Barbara is 3-11 supervisor. Addie is doing a fine job of man- aging the maternity floor. Louise is trying hard to keep the surgeons happy in the operating room. Dorothy is head nurse on Griilin Hall. Jeanette is work- ing night duty on Second East. ' Nellie Spruill came up from Sea Level where she holds a prominent position on the hospital staff. She still has a fond affection for ambulance drivers, as she is married to one. Jane Castelloe is head nurse in the obstetrical department at M. C. V., and I understand she certainly handles the job well. Betty Ritter flew up from South America where she has been doing medical missionary work. Motherhood really becomes some of the girls. Jenny and Jimmy live in Siler City with their three girls and three boys, After all, they did have a head start over the rest of us. Libby Peele is supervisor of the Currin Nursery in Oxford, She told me today it has a census of five now. The former Jeanette Reddick has been office nurse for Dr. Parrot except for a few leaves of absence to make additions to her family. Connie Hill was certainly bragging on the Johnson products. She has three- two girls and a boy. Jenny Pleasants carried out her plans for her family to the very last. She has six red-headed boys. Elsie has gone far with her leading ability.. She is now President of the A. N. A. Our class songstress, Peggy Kenan, was unable to attend the reunion as her musical, 'The Singing Nightingale, opened in New York tonight. Thelma Talton returned to her native state where she holds a prominent position on the staff at M. C. V. Cleo Baker is doing her bit for her country. She said it was very interesting nursing the President following his appendectomy. The reins of Smithfield Hospital are in the hands of Winnie Lou Bradley. Uncle Sam requires that his nephews have the best of nursing care. They get nothing less from Ruth Worrell and Helen Williams. Joy Bristow and Joe live in Rhode Island where she does office nursing. The hours suit her fine since she can be with her family when Joe comes in from work and the children come from school. Barbara Garrett and a doctor have won universal recognition for discovering and isolating a deadly bug. After three years at Rex, Daryl Tart has returned to Rocky Mount and mar- ried that mysterious John Brown. Ruth Gay is industrial nurse for a firm in Charlotte. Ruth Pierce is chief of nurses at the Veterans Hospital in Durham. I missed Mary Ann Conner and after questioning some of the girls learned she was in Bermuda on her second honeymoon. . John keeps Letha busy playing hostess to their friends in their Williamston mansion. Peggy Boyette and Doris Smith are doing public health nursing. Peggy is working here in North Carolina and Doris in the New York slums. My old roommate, Martha Rose Greene, is back at Troy as night supervisor of the Montgomery Memorial Hospital. May I add my name to these servants of mankind for I do feel like live been of service with my home for abandoned children. All the girls seem to have found happiness with their place in life. That's what success is anyway, I guess. How lucky I was to be a member of that out- standing class. MAE DELL SNEED. 36 CUZ 5 5 .SPOIKS OPS cb V683 .
