Here we were in a new place with new people, and I do mean scared literally to death. Not knowing what would happen next, we all watched each other. Off we went to bed that first night getting little sleep, because we knew we would never awaken the next morning for chapel at six-twenty A.M.g but we made it--half asleep. Then at eight o'clock classes started, and we thought they would never end. Study! Oh, yes, we didg .with our doors open so Miss Arbogast could walk down the hall and see all of us. Quizzes fwe called them examsl came by the dozens. Then came Christmas, Santa Claus and all, and then-home for three long days. Time went by, some of our girls left, but on February 18, 1949, the great day came when what should we receive but our-CAPS, all thirty seven of us! ! Yes, the prettiest capping there ever wasf! Then-a whole weeks vacation and back to work as real nurses. Our second year started and we weren't the 'cgreenestl' ones any longer, because a new class was under us. In fact, we thought since we were Juniors, we were the smartest things around! We were restricted quite a few times during our Junior year and given the name of the meanest class, we lived up to that name! ! ! Classes had become easier, and we were planning our Junior-Senior Banquet, which we thought turned out to be very nice, and everyone had a fine time. More exciting things happened day after day, but the most exciting was on September 5, 1950, at six-twenty A.M. when thirty two of us became Sen- iors. Black Bands and all . . . and the two Hover-sleepersl' became Seniors at six-twenty-five. Everyone was happy, especially The Seniorsf' To tell all we did during our Senior year would take too much space, so a few of the highlights would be the parties, picnics, and dances given to the Graduating Class. Yes, we had been so different fthis we were toldj that they decided that we would not graduate in May but September 3, 1951. This great day we have awaited for three years! Now as we complete our training days, we remember the experiences we've had togetherg and as we go out into the world may each of our lives be filled with bigger and brighter things. FOWLER CByrdl Testator 65444 za Well Bobbie, sit down and let me tell you all about my big plans. Vacation time will soon be here, and I'll have a whole month of leisure time. I decided this would be a wonderful chance to visit all the girls I graduated with from Rex. It's been a long time hasn't it, Bobbie? Yes, they were the good old days. Seems like only yesterday when we walked down the isle with a bouquet of red roses, and oh how proud we were. Enough of dreaming. I'll have to get out their addresses and start making my list, so I can make my reservations. You can help me on this, Bobby, for I have lost track with one or two of the gang and you may know where they are. Let's see now-I'll start with Beverly Jordan, my roommate for the three years of our training. I wonder if she has changed much. Can you picture Beb's milking the cows on the farm? Where is that little place they live? Oh, yes, Siler City, N. C. I told Bebs she would never work in a hospital after she got married. Says she is too busy raising chick- ens now. Oh, I'll get to see Frances and Charley McGinnis while I'm at Beb's. Frances wrote me they are going there on their vacation. I never would have thought that Frances would join the Army, but they say Charley got to traveling so fast when he was promoted to Sgt. that Frances couldn't keep up with himg so she joined the service to keep Charley in line. Isn't this some address: Sgt. and Captain McGinnis. Poor Charley! Where is that letter Joyce Bunn wrote me? She and Duck Stacy are going to Nevada sometime this summer, but I might get to see them for a day or two. There's no man shortage there. Stacy has finally decided nine years as a caudal nurse is enough. She was with Dr. Ruark you know. Joyce is still looking for that tall, dark, rich man. She's had three jobs since graduation, Infirmary Nurse at State College, Carolina, and Wake Forest. So she's leaving old N. C. Don't blame her. Millie and J. L. Allen are still in Raleigh. J. L.'s Chief of the Fire Department now, I'm dying to see their kids. Gosh I guess little Jordan Jr. is eight by now, Millie Ann is six, Lizzie four, and there will be another by the time I get there. Grace Jones is office nurse for a doctor in Apex. 4'Sweet Williamw is still giving Square Dance classes in Cary. Virginia Osteen is still Supervisor on Maternity Hall in Alexandria Hospital, Virginia. Lawson's stationed there. The Army wouldn't move him for anything. 'cause Virginia told them not too. I won't get to see Willie Willetts I guess. She's in Reno getting her fourth divorce. Willie always did say ua good man is hard to find. Irma Ruth Jones ain't got that preacher yet, but she writes she is still trying. Irma Ruth is working in Bifrlington Mills doing Industrial Nursing. Mel and Edwin Stewart are still in Chapel Hill. Edwin is Head Coach at Carolina. Mel is still one of the Supervisors in the hospital there. -C Jessie Childress is too busy these days to see anyone, so I'll mark her off the list too. After years and years of hard work and school. she finally finished studying Anesthesia. Her problem now isg which would sound better. Childress and Ogle or Ogle and Childress. Peggy Cannady and UVic Goodwin are doing Private Duty. Peggy wrote in her last letter that Cecil snores so loudly that she prefers ll-7 duty. I believe Vic still prefers 7-3. She helps Philip at the Dairy Queen in the evenings. Which reminds me, Jean Tyndall said the last time I saw her that Peggy, UVic , and she were planning to go to New York to visit Mert and Irving Page. Irving's Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Mert is recuperating from taking State Board in N. Y. She writes, one more State Board, and I'll open my own School of Nursingf' I know ,lean will enjoy herself after working for five years to get a hospital built in Kenansville and five more to get a trolly to get to the hospital. She surely must be tired. Grace Newton is quite the stuff. Kathryn Bonner said in her last letter. She owns a Sew- ing Machine factory now. Her slogan is 6'Sew with a Gracie and keep your HIM straight. Kathryn is Director of Nurses in one of the Florida Hospitals. I wonit recognize her with a tan. I know. Two Director of Nurses in one graduating class! Well. l always did say we had the smartest class. Annie Adams is Director of Nurses at State Hospital in Raleigh, and she is crazy about her work so she wrote. I sure want to see Mary Byrd and talk to her. They say she argued so much that Duke Hospital took up too much of Durham that the trustees gave in and sold two wings. She's Head Nurse in O. R. there. Pat you know is Chief of the Child Guidance Clinic there. lt must be a little embarrassing to them for their six kids, all boys and all redheads, to be brought to the Clinic every week. I still wonder why Moxie Bernhardt is doing night duty. Can you imagine Don awaking at 2 A.M. to feed Jr. Don't get excited. Bobbie, they finally put him on the bottle. 'LBubba Baughn of all people finally got to be Medical Supervisor at Rex. She worked hard for this job and writes she loves her work. She said she made the Supervisor on Griffin Hall come back on duty three times in one day to clean a unit and draw a straight red line through the cardix. and put a pencil back where it belonged. I may get to see Velma Heath. She is on leave now for a few weeks. She wrote in her last letter that she liked the Navy fine, but would like to pick her own stations. At present she is Lt. Commander of the Navy Nurse Corps in the Virgin Islands. I'll have plenty of time to see Betty Lee, because she finally got those Business Office Hoursf' She works 9-5, ofcourse. and still at Rex in the Clinic. Old Ruth Mewborn writes she likes Texas fine. She moved there after marrying a bareback rider in a rodeo. She says he's teaching her the ropes, twirling the lariat that is. fContinued on Page 521 gundam Q 7 ,I I Q 1 ! She has a starring role as Chief Hog Caller for King Nausea in the Opera Emesisf' which is playing at Carnegie Hall for three months. On clear nights you can hear her all the way down the Hudson. And speaking of Hudson. that reminds me that Hudson and Joyce Emerson are expecting for the sixth time. Hudson says if it's not a boy this time that he's joining the Foreign Legion. Shirley Jordan is busy doing Private Duty with Charles. Somebody rocked his dream boat too hardg he fell off the bow and Shirley got a job. Since Ed decided to make the Army his career, Iris is tagging along from camp to camp with Ed Jr. Iris says this is a cheap way to see the world. Madge and Ralph have opened a concession stand at the beach. Madge is Chief Nurse at the First Aid Station there. Christine Smith told me she would be home all summer so I'll get to see her. What a kick I got out of her last letter. She wrote. I was Captain of my fate. I married. now I'm just a mate. Shirley Short is so busy raising her kids, John and Marsha, that she can't work outside the home. Now I'll get to see her. She's always home. I I see Ann Stone all the time. She and Dickie are living here in Washington now. Ann had to give up nursing to concentrate on how to keep Dickie out of the Army. You can bet your life she found an answer quick. Bobbie. I'm so glad you came up. Imagine me knowing a movie star. So you're co- starring with Bugs Bunny in your next film titled, Which Twin Is The Phoneyf' I saw your picture in a movie magazine last week. You and Aly Kahn are plenty good looking together. Well I guess I've got everything lined up now. It is so nice to have such a long vacation. Who would ever think I would have ended up as Private Nurse to the President of the United States. Oh well, I always did say a woman could be swept off her feet if she'll only practice a little.
