The U. S. Cadet Nurse Corps was created by Act of Congress passed unani- mously in June 1943, to provide for the training of nurses for the armed forces, government and civilian hospitals, health agencies, and war in- dustries .... To furnish to students . . . without charge for tuition, fees or other expenses, courses of study and training, uniform, insignia, and maintenance in accordance with regulations of the Surgeon Generalf' Rex was one of the first schools to enlist in the Cadet Nurse Corps. By taking this step on July 1, 1943, we, as a school, received: Education as a student nurse to meet the requirements for gradua- tion in our school of nursing-with tuition fully paid. Board, room, and uniforms-outdoor and indoor. A regular monthly allowance of S15 during the first nine months of training, S20 a month for the next fifteen to twenty-one months, 9530 a month for the three additional months provided by the Senior Cadet period. Assured employment-as graduate nurses ,we must pass State Board examinations to become registered nurses. Then we may choose essential civilian or military service for the duration of the war or as long after as we may wish to serve . . . and the uniform and insignia of the U. S. Cadet Nurse Corps is ours, as symbols of service to our country. The area in which the war is being fought is vast. Thousands of graduate nurses must yet leave civilian posts to take on the enormous task of providing enough of the right kind of care for the servicemen who are our husbands, our brothers, our fathers, and our friends. We are proud that we could answer as Cadet nurses the urgent needs of the people at home-Mothers and their babies, war workers who were ill or injured, and men and women to whom an operation meant the difference between life and death. With our heightened perception of humanity, professional and scientific training we are ready to go into all branches of our country's services and civilian work, which is an emergency need alone. 7
