Class Prophetg Commencement Marshal, '30. Twenty-tw0 My Task O learn to use the hands the Master gave me, To ease the pain that day by day We see, To strive for patience, kindness, understanding, That true and steadfast may my motto be. For shining clear and high forever before me May hope lead on and on to show the way, That I may help some soul in pain and anguish To gladly cry the night is gone, 'tis day. Oh, may I ne'er lose sight of one great purpose, For one high, noble cause may service be, For inasmuch, the Master said to others Applies no less, I think, to you and me. To think that e'en the simple cup of water Is remembered in God's Book! and so I ask, Give me in large measure of Thy spirit, And make, oh, make me worthy of my task. Twenty-three Rrupbecp uf fllllass 1931 PPROACH with hushed voices, Softly tread, See-are these waiting with joy or dread? They watch as each must take her turn, Eight lovely maidens-that they may learn WVhat the future holds-and she speaks, nor falters, The crystal gazer bending o'er the altar Where is placed the crystal clear as clear- She is speaking, hush, for we must hear- She calls a name- Bertie Warreii, you- But Miss Warreri gasps VVhat shall I do? The Crystal Gazer: You long have searched for your ideal. The superman awaits you. No longer must you wait for within the year you are to meet him. It will be a cyclonic affair for he will sweep you completely from your feet! Tall he is and dark, his wavy hair, thick and black, his eyes-and there lies your capitulation, fair one, for you are powerless under the gaze of him who shall away your very life. His outstanding mental ability makes him the leading figure in his community and a social triumph wherever he goes. Learn well the qualities of sweet submission to a dominant will for therein lies the secret to your happiness. Miss Annie Harris-I see you in a large Pediatric Hospital in New York City. You are now entering the ninth year of your Nursing career. Due to your outstanding work as superintendent of nurses and to your high ambitions, in three years you will be made superintendent of this famous hospital. Courage, pluck and perse- verance will carry you through. Oh, Miss Helen Harrell Moonlight and roses Have wonderful power o'er you, Your heart reposes In romantic love so true, June night discloses Love's golden dream coming true, Weddiiig bells are ringing Making one happy heart of twog For you cannot resist the great white moon, You will be no longer Helen Harrell after June. The October . ., 1950, edition of the Raleigh News and Observer comes into view within the crystal. On the front page I see a picture of the magnificent North Twenty-four Carolina Neurological Hospital which has just been completed. Beside this picture I see another entitled, Dr. Elsie Mae Barnes, Chief Diagnosticianf' A court room slowly comes into view within the crystal-Can this be Clara Bow or who is the sweet, demure lady with the soft, low voice, downcast eye, and winning smile? I see the Judge as he solemnly pronounces her sentence, Guilty! The headlines of the Extras which were being sold in all directions read: Miss Marta Selma Morgan, Sued. Summing up the details it appears that Miss Morgan has appeared several times in like scenes before she finally retired to her quiet suburban home with the real choice of her heart-he having been convinced that these trials before the law for Heart Balm served only to make her sure of her own heart where he was concerned. I see a huge sign confronting me: WILLIAMSON FUNERAL HoME flncorporatedj FUNERAL DIRECTORS, EMBALMERS Miss DOROTHY WILLIAMSON ESTABLISHED 1931 In a few years, Miss Williamson, this sign will be changedg for yours, and another well-known firm in Raleigh will be merged into one. The Scene changes yet again. I see a telegraph office-the workers are all young girls. Happy smiling faces are everywhere darting about the large room. Even the delivery is made by these same laughing maidens. Miss LaRue Barbee has devised a place whereby all young girls receive daily a telegram which hinders good work. Her vast fortune left to her by a distant and unknown relative is being used to bring joy to untold thousands of young ladies who are making their way in the world. Miss Barbee's explanation is that telegrams always brought her so much joy that she longs to share the gladness with others of her age and sex. Her office will continue after her marriage which is to take place within two years. Another court scene comes to view. Miss Sudie Boykin is on the stand. She is proclaiming loudly and vehemently against the opposing forces, which seem to give way before her force of argument. Her practice in argument while in training serves her successfully in her chosen profession as a lawyer. The Crystal Gazer slowly raises her eyes from the globe before her. The curtains drop and the crystal is hid from view. Thus passes the Class of Thirty-one Into the future one by one. Training school inspectors are active in many states to keep the educational standards up to the requirements, North Carolina being one of these states. The Examining Board for Nurses meets semi-annually. In order to qualify for this examination applicants must have satisfactorily completed the curriculum spon- sored hy thc League of Nursing Education. It is interesting to note that North Carolina was the first state to require a state examination for the registration of nurses. The bill was passed in 1902 through the efforts of Miss Mary C. Wyche, first Superintendent of Nurses at Rex Hospital. Throughout the entire three-year period the patient is the center of all training. A young woman preparing to he a nurse is thoroughly drilled in elementary nursing procedures before she comes into actual contact with the patients. VVith thorough training in theory and practice, this actual contact enables her to fit into the atmos- phere and surroundings of a sick-room and render indispensable service in the care of the patient. VVith hospitals doubling and redoubling their efficiency and equipment, the evolu- tion of the nurse is evident. Today a new type person is required, typifying Florence Nightingalcis ideals of education and l'Ci'lIlClI1C!lt. and embodying the qualities found in such outstanding nurses as Miss Lillian Clayton and others Who by their ideals and examples have placed nursing education among the leading professions of today. KING Q9ur library Srrhirr ODAY library service is spreading from one hospital center to another, and it is impossible to estimate the value of recreational reading as a therapeutic agent. Public libraries are seeing the part they might play in helping cure the hospitalized sick, and the advantage of carrying books to the bedside that the patients may make a selection themselves. The book cart rolls into the corridor-the word library goes from bed to bed and the librarian is fairly overwhelmed by a variety of questions and rcfquests for certain hooks. The service given Rex Hospital by the Olivia Raney Library has the hearty endorsement of the superintendents, the doctors, and nurses. Mrs. J. S. Atkinson is librarian of the Olivia Raney Library and Miss Ellen C. King is hospital librarian. Fifty-eight , ,- . ti, 1' 1.
