PIRATE EPIC On a serene September mornrngm 1948 tlurty three members of the sturdy Puate crew hoisted anchor, and the mighty slup the Reliance set sarl for Semor Island where a gold laden treasure had been buned for erght years Realizrng that the voyage was to be perilous and that competent leaderslup was rmperatrve, the puates appomted Jim Mecca as Captalfl Bob Gramos as co captam Glenda Bare as keeper of the log and gold and Mr Donald Freeman as navlgator On February 14, a Sweetheart Ball was held at wh1ch Oscar Prmar rergned as lang In FHA, a puate orgamzanon, Shuley McCleam was elected presldent and Came Patterakrs secretary Jolm Maffon1 made all toumey at athnlhng Jumor Hrgh game m Evanston Hrgh honors were presented to the Grrls Glee and Arthur Nyqmst at the Kemmerer Mus1c Femval Although a new member Bob Reay had Jorned the puate crew, Eddre Stemack, Donald Pockett Leland Rmer Eunrce Keywaa and Ruth Shupprng departed w1th well wxshes when the shrp anchored at Freshman Island So termmated the frrst year of our Journey We resumed our search for the lost treasure on a qurescent mommg rn 1949 with Arthur Nyqmst actrng as captam Leslre Zelenka as co captam, Dolores Ramrrez as keeper of the log and gold and Mr Thomas Manatos as navxgator New addmons to the crew were Darlene Manlove Paul Gurgh and Mananne Kovach The puate crew became Southem half State Champrons when they defeated Glenrock rn football John Maffom and Oscar Punar were eager wrtnesses to the Washrngton Wyommg basketball game rn Laramre that year Slurley McC learn was agam appomted presxdent rn FHA and Carol Matson replaced Came Patterakrs as secretary Several prrates parncrpated rn the Kemmerer Mus1c Fesuval Thrs was the f1rst year that the Puates attended the Speech Festrval held annually rn Laramle Marianne Kovach and Came PBRBIBJKIS were acnve partrcrpants Sorrow laden was the atmosphere when we lost our f1rst mate Tommy Potter who dred after suffenng from a long rllness As we anchored at the harbor of Sophomore Island Pat Trujrllo Jo Ann Mrllhon Max Nlchols Glenn Wrlhamson Charles Tucker and Jack Cunrungham bade us farewell and wrshed us smooth sarlrng Thus our second year of sea fanng came to an end Our tlurd year at sea was an extremely actrve one Because the crew antxcrpated rough sa1l1ng eff1c1ent leaders were chosen Carol Matson assumed the posmon of captam John Maffon1 co captam Jack Rafferty keeper of the log and gold and Mr Douglas Johnson who was later replaced by Mr Wrlham Schwe1r1ng navxgator For recreatron the Puate crew presented the Jumor play Professor How Could You 1n whrch superror acung abllrty was requxslte Arthur Nyqulst and Mananne supported leadrng roles and other members of the competent cast were John Maffon1 Wllma Bolhnger Conme Gaylord Glenda Bare Norme Borzago J1m Mecca Jack Freeze and Wallace Mayo Restless antxcrpanon was evrdent among the crew untrl the class nngs arr1ved An operetta Sunbonnet Sue was presented by the musrc department Slurley McClearn Arthur Nyqurst Carol Matson Marianne Kovach and Darlene Manlove played actrve roles A memorable evenmg wh1ch wrll forever remam rn the mmds of the prrates was the nrght the beautxful Junror Prom Story Book Land was grven Shrrley McC learn re1gned as Queen w1th Connre Gaylord and Frances Korogr actmg as her attendants At the Casper Mus1c Festrval Shuley McC learn Mananne Kovach and Arthur Nyqurst eamed supenor ratlngs We gamed the full S1gl'llflC8I1C6 of our Journey when we were requested to pubhsh the Sand the prrate newspaper, for the f1rst nme The offrcral staff pos1t1ons were occupred by the follow1ng people Carol Matson Edltor and Jack Freeze Busmess Manager Reahzatxon that we were nearmg our destmatron dawned on us when we escorted the semors on Commencement mght As our thud year of sarlrng drew to a close and we anchored at Junlor Isle we bade farewell to our old classmates John Peterson Avrs Wrllrams John Hams Wallace Mayo LaRee Greenhalgh and Betty Jean fortune thrs was the last Joumey Determlnatsron was wr1tten all over thelr tanned weather beaten faces as they holsted anchor The captam Dolores Ramrrez stood at the helm and alongsxde were Slurley McClearn co captam Carol Matson keeper of the log and gold and Mr Gerald Zappellr navxgator Th1s was the frrst year eleven man football was employed lt worked very successfully wrth the team tak1ng thlrd place The Semor Hop Blue Chnstmas was a gala affarr presented by the lrvely pxrates Annual staff offxcxals were elected of wh1ch the Edrtor was Came Patterakrs Asslstant Edrtor Sh.1rley McClearn Busxness Manager hm Mecca and Assrstant Busrness Manager Glenda Bare The semor boys recerved thexr Jackets and wh1te sweaters deslgnarxng then senronty The Journahsm Conference held rn Laramle was attended by Carol Matson and Came Patterakrs Carol Matson was elected as vrce president of the Student Councll and J1m Mecca was appomted as a representatlve The operetta Lady of the Terrace presented by the musrc department rncluded three semors rn 1ts cast The sen1or play marked the clostng actxvrtres of our class As we neared our destrnauon land was srghted and we cast the anchor Stepplng upon Semor lsland we observed the tree wh1ch mdxcated the area of our buned treasure Eagerly we dug untrl we struck the cold heavy rron The chest was elevated and pned open and there lay the fabulous treasure our diplomas However rnstead of expressrng Joy at our discovery an lnexphcable sorrow enveloped our crew Only now drd we reach the conclusxon that although we had gained the treasure we had lost something far more valuable our happy school days . .
