GviL c j-CaQ 3 1833 02871 8788 Memorial review (Evansville, I n d . ) Memor i al rev i ew THE 1961 MEMORIAL RE VIE W PRESENTS Progress AT REITZ MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL IN EVANSVILLE, INDIANA DEDICA TION Sixteen years ago the diocese of Evansville was formed. You were sent to conquer the huge task that lay ahead. Those prosperous sixteen years have seen the establishment of many new institutions dedicated to God for our further religious development. Included among these are two new high schools, innumerable parishes and grade schools, a home for the aged, and a multi-million dollar hospital . The new Sarto Retreat House especially signifies your unending love for God. In appreciation of these and of countless other services to your flock, we dedicate this yearbook to you, our shepherd, Bishop Henry J. Grimmelsman. • • J I Streel ! %? « SCHOOL PRESS ASSOCIATION Administration 5 Faculty 8 Students 16 Religion 90 Activities 96 Sports 120 Social 138 Publications 146 Other Activities 152 ADMINISTRATION THE REVEREND ROBERT DEIG Our superintendent is looked upon as one who is intensely interested in our achieve- ments and accomplishments . His example has furthered our appreciation of our Catholic heritage. Through his spiritual inspiration he has given us a healthy con- ception of our Christian adult responsi- bilities . He has executed his adminis- trative duties skillfully and in a manner of dedicated self-sacrifice. SP£5 VN CA During three years at Memorial as prin- cipal of the Boys ' Department, he has made many changes for our benefit. Brother Leonardo has always been wil- ling to listen to any of our problems, whether academic or spiritual, and to offer constructive advice . More often than not he is seen in his office after hours working on a matter pertaining to our welfare. He has shown us what it means to love God and to respect our fellow man. BROTHER LEONARDO, C. S. C. Enthusiastic and dedicated Sister Helene is now completing her first year at Me- morial. Her pleasing personality and true inner concern for the welfare of her students has made a lasting im- pression on everyone. As principal of the Girls ' Department, she has no easy task. Nonetheless, she has had remarkable success. Her confident attitude has created an air of refine- ment and mutual charity . Sister has proven to be an outstanding leader and a true friend. SISTER M. Through this you forfeited all of the worldly pleasures which others enjoy in favor of strict dedication to the ser- vice of God. Have the years been profitable? Only you can answer that. But if reward can be measured in terms of sacrifice and ser- vice, your life has been one of success and merit. You have been stationed in several different schools in these twenty-five years. At one of them you have served as principal . You have been here at Memorial for seven years teaching subjects pertaining to math- ematics and science. You have given patient and qualified instruc- tion to countless adolescents, many of whom are on their own as adults in the world today. So, congratulations, and many returns on your Silver Jubilee . Once again the Student Council, com- posed of twenty-nine students includ- ing its president Jeff Blackwell, has continued to encourage, guide, and direct the student body toward a more earnest sense of school spirit and respect for school property. Advised by its sponsor, Brother Richard Reaume, C.S.C., the Student Coun- cil has been operating in five differ- ent committees - prefecting, student trips, assemblies, parking and safe- ty, and special activities. In 1959 the Memorial Student Council re- ceived accreditation as a member of the National Association of Student Councils. Since that time, the Stu- dent Council has done a superb job in living up to its constitution ' and providing competent leadership for the students. SCIENCE F.S.A. During the past several years ' here at Memorial ' s High School, there has been an intensified interest placed on the sciences. This interest is reflected in the students, the faculties, and the curricula. This year it was climaxed by Memorial becoming the first high school in Evansville to receive a charter from the Future Scientists of America. Through the efforts of its members, the second annual Science Fair was a grand success ' and many other programs of a scientific nature have been presented. Another group of school organizations which cannot be overlooked is the science clubs. Through the combined efforts of the FSA, the science clubs, and the faculty, a deeper, wider, and more thorough interest in and appreciation of science has been imparted to the students of Memorial. 106 LANGUAGE CLUBS SPANISH CLUB: Jane Anne Dodson, Carroll Leich, and Carolyn Weil.
