A Drop in the Bucket Blessed by the return of six lettermen, some from last years B team and other experienced boys, and the able coaching of Polly Wilhelmsen, the Pioneers streaked through their series of victories with a forty-four point plus average. In the first league game the Pioneers made a score almost double that of their opponent, Orosi, who previously In the next game, with Dinuba, Visalia took was unbeaten. an early lead and held it without difficulty. At Hanford, however, fans, coaches, and players were held in suspense as they watched the Pioneers holed up for three quarters. At the end of the third quarter Visalia finally tied the score, and in the last quarter spurred ahead to limit their opponent to one point and to win the game. The Pioneers repeated their victories over Orosi and Hanford and thus had won the league championship. Captain Merritt Gilbert was chosen as the season's most valuable player, and his name was put on the All-American blanket. George Clark recevied a white sweater as the most inspirational player on the varsity team. With only- one returning letterman, Coach Wilhelmsen chose and trained a willing g1'oup of boys who developed into a championship B team. In the first league game with Orosi the Voodoos obtained a score more than double that of the Orosi B team. This was accomplished in spite of the fact that the first string failed to play the entire game. The sec- ond game was slow to get startedg but when it did the Voodoos had to battle hard to keep up with Dinuba's Baby E-mps. The game with Hanford, ending the first round of play, was even closer. Pushed very hard throughout the game the Voodoos emerged victors by only- five points. As a result of the flood the squads of both teams found themselves with only two night's practice for the second Orosi game. In spite of all this the Voodoos finished on top with a 12-point margin. The final victory came when the lightweights again defeated the Hanford B's. This game ran very close in the first half, but the Voodoos finally straightened out and came out with a fairly large lead, enough to win the game and cinch the cham- pionship. Lonnie Low was captain. Bill Andrews was pre- sented with a white sweater as the most inspirational Voodoo player. For the first time in thirteen years the Porterville Panthers bowed down to the Pioneer eleven. Concerning total points of the jseason, the Pioneers outscored their opponents by a large margin. The Armistice Day' game unfortunately tilted to the Tulare side and the Redskins scalped the Pioneers by a score of 13-7 to make up for their last yearis defeat. Probably the most spectacular play of the season was a 90-yard run for a touchdown by' Rufus Aker in the Porterville fracas. Another victory, over Lindsay, closed the year. Considering the teams that our A squad played this year-their weight and ability-the student bodyj may be rightly proud of their Pioneer team and Coach 'lMoose Disbrow. The chant of the Voodoos, according to the beliefs of the jungle, is supposed to cast a spell of defeat upon all its enemies. However, this time That Old Black Magic seemed to have lost its devastating effects. The Voodoo team started the season this year with a group of nine returning veterans, a large batch of red-hot frosh and a new coach in the person of Bob Widger. Things looked great until the first game when the Voodoos suffered not only a defeat from Delano but also injuries to several of their star players. It seemed it just wasn't their year to come to the top. Although they fought hard against heavier squads, they suffered defeat in every game. The annual Armistice Day game showed some of the real playing abilities of those gallant fightersg the Tulare Papooses had all they could do in breaking through the de- fenses of the Voodoo team. But only the two points against Exeter kept it from being a goose egg season. Dave Byrnes coined the brilliant headings, and Darryl Jerlow wrote the sports write-ups. Betty Bechtel was chief clerk, doing the typing and editing the senior biographies. Nell Mainwar- ing did all odd jobs, one of which was proof-reading. The photography staff collected and took the snaps and decided on figure arrangements. The 1945 edi- tion could not have been completed without those willing hands who came to our rescue at the close of the term. Sam Farsakian finished the sale of the ads, Louise Smith and Barbara Joseph helped with the typing of the copy, and Bea Cox and Diane Perkins checked names. Salesmenx front-PM Crowell. From then on, it operated on a bi-weekly basis, publishing sixteen issues throughout the yea1'. At Christmas. the staff published a special six page edition in green ink commemorating the holiday spirit. Shortly afterwards, one issue of the paper was postponed by the flood, and the Pioneer staff brought out an early Tuesday edi- tion giving the facts of the flood damage to the school. On the Week preceding April 1st the Pioneer published a blue ink edition for April Fo0l's Day. Appropriately titled the Pie-On-Ear , the issue was the first at Visalia in three years. A. A. is the Girl's Athletic Association. This year's program in- cluded baseball, basketball, volley- ball, hockey, and soccer. Tourna- ments were held at noon with team competition. The girls invited the Hanford, Tulare, Dinuba, Porterville and Woodlake organizations to a playday at which intermural contests were played, and entertainment was provided at noon by each town. The girls made pom-poms to sell for the athletic games. The profit they netted was used to put on a dance in honor of the football teams. The Boys Block V also asked them to be in charge of the decorations for their dance. The highlight of the year was the Mother-Daughter banquet held near the close of the semester in the cafe- teria. Awards were made at this time. w . 4 Managers: fall in front-Lupe Mi- randa. basketball: Mary DeLaCruz. speedball: Evelyn G-ummow. tennis: Shirley Meissen. archery: spring in back-Bebe Bailey, tennis: Betty Stevenson. badminton: Pauline Pot- ter. hockey: Allene Langdon, softball.
