Boy meets girl in almost every activity on the campus, in classes, at lunch time, in assembly, at football games, at Yfnight, and at dances. Therefore, the Makio staff takes this opportunity to portray hovv the academic side of school life and the hoyfandfgirl side are inseparahly inter' mingled. We invite you to take a trip through the school year to view all the various sights and activities that make up our Redlands High School. -j table of contents 1, mi1u1CAT1cvN 2. DLLING happily to school every morning in his little green model A, Mr. Clarence Hardy rushes to his oihce, receives last minute briefing for the day's work, and dives inf to his neverfending task of educating the younger generation. Since 1916 he has persisted in his ellorts to enlighten a considerable portion of the R. H. S. student hody. ln addition to his duties as head of the Nlanual Arts department, he teaches mechanif cal and architectural drawing. Besides the practical training, his Nlanual Arts classes are taught the significance of a smile and a friendly greeting, Because of his democratic principles of equality, his ever present helping hand, and his long service as an excellent teacher, we dedicate this Makita to Mr. Hardy. . B. cabinet members: president. vicefpresident, secretary, commissioner of finance, commissioner of athletics, Boys' League president, Girls' League president, Hobachi editor, Makio editor, and commissioner of publicity. The cabinet met on the average of twice a week sixth period. They discussed solutions of school prob' lems, passed all budgets for the clubs and organizations, and took care of C.B.L. affairs. All the members of the cabinet are automatically on the student council. On April 24, Redlands was the scene of the all C. B. L. cabinet dance. This dance was given to prof mote better relations and to get bettera cquainted with the other schools. Mr. Bland was the very helpful and understanding cabinet adviser. The administrative council was newly organized on the campus last year for the purpose of promoting a better understanding between the faculty and the students. There are six faculty representatives: the principal, the two deans, the cabinet adviser, and two representatives of the faculty at large. The A.S.B. prexy, Hobachi editor, Girls' League president, Boys' League president, and the three class presidents make up the student representatives. The council was scheduled to meet once a month. The Hrst meeting was held in the flats at the begin' ning of the school year to make out the school calendar and settle the problems and questions of the facf ulty and the students. The graduate felt obliged to explain some of his escapadcs with the third party in the eternal triangle, Past. The first few hours were spent reminiscing . . . treasure hunt, class day, continuous victories in bond drives! Fun, excitement, competition l Ah, Past and I really went in for things in a big way signed graduate. Together we paved the way to dramatic success, scholarship achievements, and final happiness he' cause of cooperation and unity. She wore a pearl gray and mulherry gown to our wed' ding, but I went to Baccalaureate with the rest of the gang. I guess I realized then that you, Future, are the one for me. That faith is justified by the impressive record of events that this class has made in the traditionally difliicult Junior year. Things started off with a special sweater assembly presided over by Ferren Christensen, Junior class president, during which representatives from local clothiers exhibited what they had to offer in the way of class sweaters. After some deliberation an emblem was chosen and kelly green was designated as the sweater color. It was at this assembly that Luster Hauth, elected treasurer in a special election, officially opened the Junior dues drive. Later in the year a class ring committee headed by jim Read, Junior vicefpresident, and Bernice Purf vis, class secretary, chose the ring which is destined to be worn and traded by many classmates. Along about March, Ferren and jim began plans for a talentffilled junior assembly to rouse the spirit of their mighty class. just to do things up right the guys and gals sported their new sweaters for the first time at the assembly. Finally the big test came-the fabulous JuniorfSenior Prom of 1946! Its theme, delightfully centered around the mythical tale of Cinderella, gave way to many lavish ideas on decorations which were used to advantage. The success of this event alone satisfied the weary seniors that the student body would be in good hands next year. f--.J KA I Rl lcltlulellitlt lll'CI'. Despite all this they've come through as one of the largest and liveliest class' es old R. H. S. has seen in many a moon. The first Sophomore class meeting of the year was a highly entertaining talent show with Bruce Risely acting as master of ceremonies. Much promising sports material for future varsity teams came into view this year. The driving team spirit and ability of the boys resulted in some fine playing. They were especially good in basketball, tying for second place with Colton. The only major activity of the year was the Soph Class party on May 31 fin honor of the Editor's birthday, naturallyj The party was planned by the cabinet. All Sophof mores were invited to attend. Dancing was the main form of entertainment. The class ofhcers for the year were Don Higdon, president, Jerrold Fronk, vicefpresif dent, Beverly Davis, secretary, and Gail Glass, treasurer. Meeting with Mr. Bowles, their adviser, they have handled all the class business. The council members are chosen from their sixth period classes: A. S. B. cabinet members are automatically on the council and A. S. B, prexy acts as president. The council is supposed to meet once a month, but advisory periods have been so crowded with other activities through the year that the council has not had a great many meetings. The representatives bring problems for discussion from their sixth period classes. These discussions help promote better relationship between the administration and the stu' dents and also bring to light what the students like and dislike about school. These meetings give the cabinet members ideas about what kind of activities are popular with the students and they are able to plan accordingly. l'lRZNl Rim Ia-II Io Rigliiz 1-Illia-II Ki-Iglei. Heading the list of interesting programs are HifY dances, HifY f HifTri banquets, movies, speakers, and, of course, basket' hall and baseball games with other clubs outside of Redlands. Having a tradition of two elections for officers during a school year, the cabinets consisted of the folf lowing boys: During the first semester George Fletcher was President: Bob Herman, vicefpresidentg Mu rray Grant, secrctaryg Bill Wilscin, treasurerg ,lim Miller, devotional chairman, and Tom Farrington, ser' gcantfatfarms. The second semester cabinet had Bob Herman as presidentg George Fletcher, vicefpresif dent, Frank Brown, secretaryg Tom Farrington, sergeantfatfarmsg Bill Wilsruii, treasurer: and Sam Sallie, devotional chairman. With his return to the student body at the U. of R. from the Army, Harold Wy' mer was made adviser and sponsor of the club at the start of the second semester. Also at this time a program of expansion was begun, and the HifY increased to about thirty members. I As a boys' service club under the Y. M. C. Being one of the best in Southern California has led the choir into many performances before large groups ol people. Three broadcasts at KPRC brought great acclaim from the community of Redlands. Besides several engagements with service clubs in Redlands, the choir has journeyed to March Field: Fontana, San Bernardino and Yucaipa, to perform for the musicallyfminded audience. A party at Christmas was preceded by a group of carollers who rode a bus to be carried to the Comf munity Hospital and the Elks Club to sing in recognition of Christmas. Assemblies such as Armistice Day and Thanksgiving allowed the 140 people in the Angelic Choir to make their debut in Beverly Hills to contest with the voices of ten other choirs. The team, sparked hy the return of six returning letter' men, pleased Coach Anson Bowles hy the showing of such excellent talent. lrl Denniston, captain of the leather lungers led his crew to place third in the CIF entries. Two meets with Colton offered more confidence in the Terrier team as they placed the Yellowjackets helow them. Although Moses, the Terrier threat did not run in the CBL entry, Redlands placed first in the league, Denniston running the course in 9.28.8, followed hy Berdoo, Colton and Riverside respectively. Then it was in our grasp but it slipped, faltered and then decided to remain in our hands for at least another season. Practice meets went badly for the mermen this season. The Riverside Poly Bears and Black Foxe Milif tary Academy both triumphed over us in practice meets, but to keep the ledger straight, the mermen swept through dual meets with Mt. Carmel, Huntington Park and Challey. Two fine showings at Comp' ton and the CIF midwinter relays rounded out the practice season in time for the Redlands lads to he set for the CBL meet on May Znd. Terrier fans have never witnessed as exciting a meet as this. Prefrneet dopesters rated it a tossup hef tween Redlands and the Poly Bears. First event of the afternoon was the medley relay. Riverside came through with the win but not until a new CBL record had been set. Bethell and Miller were both double winners for the Redlands paddlers and Hansen came through with his usual hackstroke win, but this didn't seem to be enough. For when the final tally was posted it was Riverside's meet by a point and a half. But for once fate was on our side and a retahulation found the Terriers champs again by half a point. No small amount of credit can go to Bethell and Hansen, who swam their third and final year un' der Terrier colors. Also to Coach Del Henrich, whose rigorous training program brought that final punch and victory. With most of the squad returning, it looks like a great season again next year when the Terrier athletes are called to the old swimming hole. teen years Miller and Phillips chalking up points against competitors in thc meet with Riverside. l i 74 ul- t 'f 1 ! An otherwise drab season showed brightness in its Hrst week with good showings against the U. of R. squad. The Terriers journeyed across the wash for their first C.B.L. encounter with Berdoo. For the first time in three years the Redlands lads broke a Redbird jinx and scored two points, but that was not enough and they were sent hack to the navel orange center on the short end of a 9 to 2 score. Failure to score a single victory against a seeming' ly weak Colton squad again caught the Terriers on the short end, this time 6 to 5 . Disheartened, the Terriers went to Pomona to be sent home again in defeat, 8 to 3. As this goes to press the Redlands boys still have the league leading Chaifey Tigers and the cellar dwelling Poly Bears to play. At least one victory should come from these encounters to save the Ter' riers from the cellar. ' e-4-me if i 4..lhin-l Fl RST ROXV, Left to Right - George Taylor, Richard Casey. Veteran Bob Ballesteros is in comtnand of the mound, while sophomore Mervin Sliger operates as catcher. George Fletcher, senior and veteran, is planted at the initial sack. Vince Figgins is responsible for the second base. The hot corner is handled by Bob Fedderson, last year's vet. Abel Tena is holder of short stop po' sition. The outside patch is composed of Bill Engleman, some new material from Missouri, ,lim Mead, and Boyd Jeffries, both veterans from last year's squad. The Terrier boys have no seasonal chalkups, the nearest to victory being with the Colton Yellow' jackets, to lose 1-0. Coach Erwin H. Simpson is the able leader of this ball club and intends to send a few into national competition. Entering CBL competition for two rounds, Red' lands has accepted no certificate for contention on the league ladder.
