The paper must go on and even lohnny's most inopportune measles attack ailed to keep Susan-and her very feminine cleas-from running the show. CAWL .if-rec! ofeonlrarcl rincipa Jddrif. lgrinciloa Dear Seniors: In a few days now, you will be leaving Redford for other experiences. Some of you will be starting to college to continue training for some profession. Others of you will be starting on your first iob. All of you, however, will be leaving Redford's halls at a time when the temper of the nation seems often to reflect not faith, but fear. The uneasy armistice of 1918 flares a second time into war. We, of the faculty, hope for you that we have distilled from the elements of our rich American heritage, the courage, the faith, the enterprising spirit of our forefathers. They faced problems in every aspect of life as grave to them as ours are to us. If their life was less complex, so also were their means of abundant living less effective. We can build upon the facts they accumulated and the insight they achieved, but we dare not minimize their freedom-loving and freedom-winning spirit. Value our heritage, but also face the future with confidence. Whatever you do or wherever you go, there is one simple secret of success-acquire the habit of doing each day a little more or a little better than is required or expected of you. You will find your reputa- tion enhanced and your responsibility increasing. Be sure to keep this splendid book. lts purpose is to help keep a clear picture of the many events and acquaintances of these happy carefree days at Redford. Yours has been a fine class. May you have every possible success in the world. Sincerely your friend, Homer A. Clark 0111150 0I'5 Marian Devine Ellen Egan Frieda Harsch Regina O'Meara C. H. The first, Redford vs. U. of D. virtually decided the West Side Championship. The second, Redford vs. Northeastern, decided the League Championship. The Huskies' season opened against Chadsey on Sawyer Field. Redford won 27-6, but the game was closer than the score indi- cated. The following Friday Redford met Mackenzie under the lights at Mackenzie Field. The Huskies won 16-0. Redford's traditional game with Cooley saw the Huskies nip the Cardinals 27-6. Central was next on Redford's list. The Huskies were lulled by reports of Central's inferiority, and Redford was lucky to come through with a 7-6 win. The outcome of the season depended on the game with U. ol D. The Cubs were undefeated, and were sporting almost all the backs that led them to the Metro League Championship last year However, the Huskies were up for this game and licked the Cub: 27-13. It virtually gave Redford the Championship since our only remaining games were with Southwestern and Northwestern. The Prospectors from Southwestern fell before the Huskies 30-6 Redford's gridders will remember this game for its roughness. ln the final game the Huskies spanked Northwestern 27-O, am became West Side Champs. Stadium. Redford's opponents, the Northeastern Falcons, had an impressive scoring record, piling up 227 points to their opponents 58. The Huskies went into the game in the role of underdog. Northeastern lived up to pre-game predic- tions and gave the Huskies a run for their money. Redford grabbed an early lead, scoring a safety and a touchdown. Then the Falcons bounced back with two touchdowns to take the lead 12-9. Redford 'egained the lead with two touchdown drives in the second quarter. The half ended with Redford leading 22-12. In the third quarter the Falcons started rolling again and smashed across two touchdowns. Redford, behind 26-22, scored the inal touchdown in the fourth quarter. The final score: Redford 29, Slortheastern 26. This see-saw battle was described as follows: It vvasn't that defense was lacking, the offense of either team was just oo hot to handle. This marked the first time Redford was undefeated and untied n 8 games. One of the maior factors contributing to our success vas the Huskie line. This line, averaging 200 lbs., was the heaviest n Michigan High School Football. Three of its members, Ken Shields, Russ Varin and Brad Lemerand, were All-City. The backfield had All-City Larry Price at left halt, T95 lbs., Zen Pattinson at fullback, Duane Hadley at right half, and Dick isher calling the signals. Redford's attack was varied, having good 'nds, good runners, fair passers and a plunging fullback. KEN SHIELDS Second Team AIl.5fqfe KEN CORNWALL All-City tackle center edford Six clays after their victory over Northeastern the Huskies took on the Catholic League Champion, St. Gre- gory. This was the annual Goodfellow game held under the lights at Briggs Stadium. Over 30,000 spectators saw a spirited St. Gregory squad nearly upset the favored Huskies, Redford won by a single point, 7-6. Irvine kicked off into the St. Gregory end zone. The Cherokees went off tackle twice for their first down on their 30. Here they were stopped and were forced to kick. Larry Price took the punt and ran 55 yards for a touch- down. This play, unfortunately, was called back and Red- ford was penalized T5 yards for clipping. The Huskies couldn't get rolling and so Irvine punted on the fourth down. St. Gregory took charge but couldn't make any headway and so George Ridella punted on the fourth down to Price. The game seesawed back and forth in this manner for the first half. ln the third period Frank Boscovitch kicked off to Price who ran the ball to the 36. Two plays later St. Gre- gory's Tom Hamm intercepted Price's pass on the Redford 44. The Huskies held there but on the fourth down George Redilla kicked out on the Redford T foot line. On the next play lrvine, standing 9 yards behind the goal line, punt- ed to St. Gregory's 42 yard line. Here St. Gregory was stopped once again. The kick on fourth down was bad and the ball went out of bounds on St. Gregory's 43. Six plays later the ball rested on St. Gregory's 'l foot line. On the fourth down Pattinson fumbled and fell back to the 'l0 yard line. Here the Cherokees took charge but were stop- ped cold. The kick went to Price who ran it back to St. Gre- gory's 30. The Huskies started rolling again and made the first score with Pattinson going over from the l yard line. Irvine kicked the extra point. St. Gregory bounced back in the fourth quarter. Price fumbled on the Redford T4 and Jim Swoish of St. Gre- gory's recovered. Three plays picked up 3 yards. On fourth down George Redilla passed to Jim Clayton in the end zone. St. Gregory failed to convert. The heroes of this game played on defense. The en- tire St. Gregory team played sharp football. Outstanding for Redford was Dick lrvine who not only kicked the win- ning point but punted the Huskies out of trouble several times. a A163 1 3 an if ,,,w- lx K, 1 N-gr 35-'SK 51 Qi W 5, N X wx N x x 3 SK x A Xxx ' L v NX . -Y x We SA N t f.:.::-:,:,::g.,,:g: as Ai-w.:.-. ......, S as X Q xl xx X X :P ggi X N S SN ..,.,.b:.:: . gk Q 'R if :M 'M I E5 if J eaerue ROW ONE: Marvin Olds, Phil Spielh, Dick Bagnall, Roger Williams, Richard An- derson, Larry Pehrson, Andrew Sommers, Tom Williams, Al DeLuca, Gary Sanders, Douglas Gembis, George Ridley. Redford eat the Cowboys with Alan Batsford finishing in front. Redford's second meet saw the Huskies beat a strong Central quad 29-34. Hatcher of Central finished first but Redford captured 'tough of the first 'IO places to win. The third meet of the year brought together Mackenzie, Chad- ay, and Redford in a triangle meet. Mackenzie finished first, Red- ard second, and Chadsey third. Redford met Northwestern in the final meet of the season. The olts trampled our Huskies 15 to 56 with Roosevelt Evens setting new track mark of 9:34.6. The Huskies finished fifth in the West Side Finals. Redford's -st place was taken by Barry Batsford, who finished ilth. Twin 'other Alan finished 'l7th. Redford didn't have any exceptionally fast runners this year. owever, they had six boys who ran fast enough to outpoint two their opponents. Alan and Barry Batsford, Tom Sweetman, Ger- d Teitz, Chuck Worthington, and Deem Hirschfield accounted for ost of Redford's points. Team spirit is a great thing. Occasionally it can win games and even championships. Take, for instance, Redford's T950 swimming team. At the end of the T949 season all the stars of the team graduated with the exception of Burwell Bumpy Jones. It was generally agreed that Redford didn't stand much of a chance to win any championships this year. However, Coach Richard Stuckey went right ahead as if he had a championship team. The funny part of it is he did have one! ln seven meets the Huskies collected seven victories. The SCOFGS Were! Redford . Chadsey T8 Redford . Mackenzie 38 Redford Northeastern 20 Redford . . Western 35 Redford Southwestern 2l Redford . . Central 32 Redford , . Cooley 43 The Cooley meet was the test of the season. The Cardinals were also undefeated in six meets. Five points was the margin of victory but they were enough to win Redford's third consecu- tive West Side Championship. Redford placed sixth in the City Finals. The only bright spot for Redford was Team Captain Bumpy Jones who placed first in two events and earned almost all of Redford's points.
