V. P. FLORENCE B. BEITENMAN On the occasion of the l5Uth anniver- sary of the Bill of Rights, it is fitting that, in a Year Book dedicated to Liberty, there should be some mention of the four liberties that our forefathers, fearful of later oppression, especially safe- guarded: Freedom of speech Freedom of worship Freedom of the press Freedom of peaceful assembly Our most fervent wish for you, the Class of l942, is this: May the land in which you live continue under your guidance to be a land Where these four liberties, properly observed and protected, are to you, as the air about you. With this great inheritance, may you develop a feeling for the rights of others, a desire to secure the same privileges and op- portunities for others that you Wish for yourself. God speedl V. P. WILLIAM L. FINK The long voyage home from Europe in the little ship Orca had almost ended, and We were in our cabins preparing our baggage for disembarkation. Sud- denly a fellow-passenger who had been on deck rushed past our state-rooms, shouting enthusiastically: We've seen her at last! Hastily we finished pack- ing and hurried on deck Where there had gathered an excited crowd intently gazing upon the Statue of Liberty. That statue means much to persons ap- proaching Plmerican shores. To the stranger, it is a silent suggestion of hap- pier tomorrowsg to the returning citizen, it symbolizes those principles of govern- ment that have made our country great and kept her free. Class of l942: by means of precept and practice, your school has sought to ac- quaint you with the privileges and re- sponsibilities that are inherent in de- mocracy. We know that you will per- petuate your heritage, that you will ever strive to keep Liberty's torch shining brightly in a world where so many lights have gone out. if . V we-2 .-1 . 'fini 'Suv' ' Z
