I ll 5, I v I l P i I I Q I i DE ICATI WE, THE CLPISS OF 1940, DEDICHTE OUR YEQRBOOK TO YOU, OUR SPON- SORS. DURING THE PHST THREE YEHRS, YOU HPIVE BEEN OUR CI-IIEFTHINS, GUIDING US IN OUR PLHNS HND LEHDING US FORWPIRD SO THHT WE MIGHT SUCCESSFULLY REHCI-I THE TERMINHTION OE OUR FIRST HDVEN- TURE INTO LIFE. MESSHGE FROM MR. ENTERLINE Now that you have come to the end of your public school career, it is easy to conclude that your tasks are ended. Still, with your maturity and judgment, you have already sensed the fact that the great school of out-of-doors is immediately demanding practical answers to many questions. Your answers will depend, in part, on your recognition of the problems, your understanding of them, and on the sincerity and the enthusiasm which you exercise in attacking them. Find you may expect a reward, either material or spiritual which accom- panies sincerity of effort and devotion to a cause. May your theme, Indian Lore , help you to familiarize yourself quickly with the practical aspects of life. Then too, may we remind you that your understanding and appreciation of life will be enriched by the worthy friendships you make. The pleasant or unpleasant associations you make will depend upon your tact, judgment, and self-control. Thus, you should be both a practical and a sociable person. Your sponsors have had many delightful experiences in working with the class of 1940, and here is their wish. May every member of this great class be fortunate enough to find some worthy endeavor in life to which he can devote himself with such zest and zeal that it will bring him honor, a most satisfactory means of support, and promote good-will in the environ- ment in which he moves. MESSHGE FROM MR. HILLEGHSS Your slogan, Life Begins With Forty is quite appropriate. You stand at the beginning of a new decade. Despite the economic, social, and political troubles of the day, there is a very heavy demand for competent, dependable, and well-trained workers, Through the ages, the ability to think clearly has always been considered a desirable quality. The young man or woman, who has learned to think clearly and is equipped in character, in personality, in competence, and in skill, is not likely to wait long to Begin Life with '4O. May l extend my sincere wishes to each one of you, and hope you will live a full life so that your reward may be a life fuzll of real happiness. MESSHGE FROM MISS HICKS With what ideals and ideas do you face the future, O Class of l94O, here and everywhere? What do you consider the most important in life, what really matters most to you? Upon your answer depends the character pf our world of tomorrow. May you have the courage to aim at the highest for yourself and your fellowmen.

F T THEME EXPLANATION SINCE THE VERY FIRST EXPLORER SET FOOT ON THIS CONTINENT, THE INDIAN, HIS LIFE, HABITS, RELIGION, AND CEREMONIES HAVE PROVED A SUBJECT ABOUT WHICH MEN HAVE SPECULATED, STUDIED, AND WRITTEN. BECAUSE OF THIS INTENSE INTEREST, THE INDIAN MOTIF HAS BEEN CHOSEN FOR OUR YEARBOOK, AND, BECAUSE THIS YEAR EVERYTHING ABOUT OUR GRAD- UATION PROGRAM IS TRULY AMERICAN, WE COULD NOT COMPLETE OUR PROGRAM WITHOUT GIVING THE AMERICAN INDIAN A PROMINENT PLACE IN THE ARRANGEMENTS. TRULY, WHO CAN MEASURE THE CONTRIBUTIONS THE AMERICAN INDIAN HAS MADE TO OUR HIGHLY SPECIALIZED MODERN SOCIETY AND WHO CAN JUDGE THE EFFECT WHICH HE HAS HAD UPON OUR CIVILIZATION? S A Wf.
