7?5X The 1958 edition of the Ravenswood High School gridiron team had a tough season, still they turned in an impressive four won, four lost, two tied record. They opened their season with de- feat by a close margin, being downed by the Wahama White Falcons of Mason 14-13. The game was nip and tuck all the way with McCoy and Culp scoring for Ravenswood and Gould making the extra point. Next the Red Devils visited the Spencer Yellow Jackets who came to life to overcome an early Ravenswood lead of 7-6 and go ahead to trounce the Red Devils 25-7. The lone score of R.H.S. was made by Smokey -Wilson on a run around right end from five yards OLII. The Red Devils then were visited by Van at Flinn Field where the Devils tasted their first vic- tory ofthe season by capping off a perfect homecoming Friday night with a 7-0 victory. Several key blocks broke Daryl Culp loose for the score and Jimmy McKinley dropkicked the extra point. Once again the Red Devils went on the road traveling to Sistersville where they were up -ended 12 -6. Pete Gould made the sensational lone score when he intercepted a pass on the Ravens- wood 27 and raced 73 yards. The Red Devils hit the road once again and returned successfully with a close 7-6 victory over the Pennsboro Cardinals. lt was a tough and muddy game. Defensive standouts for the winners were Tucker, McCoy, Southall, Hendershot, and Cooper. On offense those looking best for the Red Devils were Gould, Cooper, Tucker, Hall, Culp, Wilson, and McCoy. The Red Devils went on the road for the last time to tie in a thrilling game with the Calhoun Red Devils 12-12. The Calhoun team which had rolled to five straight victories was not pre- pared for a fired -up Ravenswood team to turn the tide in the second period. The entire R.H.S. team stood out in their uphill battle with Culp, Gould, Tucker, Wilson, Norris,Cooper, McCoy, and Hannum being the leaders for the underdog Ravenswood eleven. The Red Devils returned home to take their third win of the season over the Wirt High Tigers 19-'7 at Flinn Field. A 90 -yard kick-off return by halfback Daryl Culp in the final quarter following touchdowns by Joe McCoy and Gerry Stephenson iced the victory for Ravenswood. The Red Devils rallied to their second tie game of the season by opposing a hard hitting Crum High School team at home base, the score 6-6. The first half was a defensive battle with neither club making a serious threat. The highly disputed extra point play will long be remem bered by the fans. Leading the defensive unit were Crow, Norris, Hannum, Tucker, McCoy, Culp, and Gould. Next by staving off three serious scoring threats, the R.H.S. team succeeded in downing Buffalo 13-6. In this game-fullback, Smokey Wilson, starred in helping the Red Devils hang up their fourth victory against a scrappy Buffalo team which turned loose an aerial barrage in three near scores. The Ravenswood Red Devils went down in their final defeat as the Ripley Vikings got lucky and hit daylight for their only touchdown to beat the hard fighting Devils 6-O in an action packed game. Despite the upsets the season will be remembered as a good one. Named to the first team on the all L-K Conference was Joe McCoy, honorable mention going to Smokey Wilson. The grid banquet where W, Va. Tech. Coach, Ray Watson, delivered the main talk, was a fitting climax to the 1958 football season, 40
