C R. BATES, a former band director of the high school, has shown us through his teaching and guidance in our chemistry and science classes that he is a real and true friend to all. His interesting classes and friendly manner of teaching are appreciated by all his students. His outstanding personality has long been, and always will be, an important part ofour school life. S junior class adviser and English and American history teacher, Mrs. Francies has more than contributed her eleven years of service to our Alma Mater. She has shown her interest and sense of responsibility in more ways than can be enumerated, helping us with the Prom, the iunior class play, selection of class rings, election of iunior class officers and in classroom prob- lems. adminlsirallo s Qs s sqkxstgxsx '-. six 1- s x 'O aw. s 'WX x -.V K .fx sts SX X Ref' - X 'wma S, x 'bw N 'xlsqx Nw x xx,:'NiXoX ' X 'X Selah' WCB -Nts t x 9 s Cx xxx W S x ' X WX Q s SC -f:,.QxQ'g N X .,'-,xs' XX 11321132325-.szixislzis .r?'?:5ri'-.4'2-'.+.hf:fJfE15T3- .'.g.,f.55-:,,- :-:- :Z'7.f .e:T:-g?g':-g+:g:Q:g5?jf,a-. Team- work between the line and the backfield paid off as they gained 338 yds. rushing to the Bearcats mere 109. Mike Watt, flashy iunior skatback, turned in a stellar performance by gaining over 100 yds., including several long runs between end and tackle and scoring one of the three tallies. Fullback Chas. Proctor scored the two other TD's by line plunges from handoffs by Louie Gray, deceiving the Bearcat defense . Q t f Q SALEM Ravenna's defensive alertness proved fatal to Salem's chances as the R eleven capitalized on two Quaker fumbles and scored twice in the first half to down Salem 13-7. Quarterback Tom Gray tallied the Ravens initial touchdown, climaxing a 46 yd. drive after sophomore Carl Reedy recovered the first Quaker bobble in the first ten seconds of the tussle. ln the second period, guard Dave Younkman fell on another Salem fumble on his own 19. After Tom Gray and Mel Pump combined for 36 yds on a long aerial and several line plays, Charlie Proctor drove over from the five for the Raven's final and decisive score. Salem took to the air in the final period and managed to salvage o six pointer to make the final score 13-7. 'I' k 'R Q ST. VINCENT Passes, the main weakness all season, downed the Ravenna gridders for their initial defeat of the season. Led by Carl Riesh, St. Vincent trompled the Ravens 41-13 at Green Street Stadium in Akron. Mel Pump and Walt Livingston did all the Ravenna scoring with one TD each. Q Q I 1' ASHLAND The R eleven almost pulled the upset of the year as they outplayed Ashland's A's in a 19-12 defeat. The Ravens had the ball on Ashland's six yd. line as the gun sounded handing the Ravens their second straight defeat. End, Dick Gardner and Captain Walt Livingston registered the Ravens' tallies. A safety was scored when Al Kaupinen and Ernie Fullum downed Ashland's quarterback in his own end zone. Q 'I 'I 'I KENT ROOSEVELT Our arch-rivals, Kent Roosevelt, suffered one of their worst losses in years to the Ravenites 44-7 for the visi- tor's third triumph. The Ravens outstanding players were their speedy halfbacks, Mel Pump and Mike Watt who tallied two TD's apiece. Mel started the ball rolling with a 44 yd. gallop for the Raven's first score while Mike's longest iaunt was 62 yds., coming in the third period. Everyone got into the act as Coach Gilcrest emptied the bench, Roosevelt finally tallied late in the game when Oliva broke through the Ravenna subs for their lone score. 'A' l 'I 'I KENT STATE One of the highest scores ever posted by a RHS football team was recorded when the Ravens tromped Kent State 54-6. ' Tom Burt and Walt Livingston led the Ravenites attack by tallying 3 and 2 TD's respectively. Others to break into the scoring were Butch Gilcrest, Mike Watt, and Charlie Proctor-each scored one tally. The Blue Devils spoiled the Ravenites chances for a shutout when Mick Mackey ran 55 yards on a deceptive double reverse for the lone Kent score. Q Q 'l I EAST PALESTINE A rugged, fleet East Palestine eleven handed the Ravenna gridders their third defeat of the campaign 33-19. Mel Pump. the lone star of the game as far as the home-towners were concerned, scompered 44 yards for a TD for the Ravens outstanding play. Howdy Miller and Joe Mazzola combined to score the remaining two tallies for the Ravens. Miller fell on a fumble in his own endzone for his only score of the season. Q' 'I 'k i' TIMKEN Once again the Ravenite's pass defense bogged down as they went down to defeat at the hands of Canton Tim- ken 27-13. Tom Gray and Mel Pump started things off right for the Raven squad with a TD pass covering some 87 yds. The Troians came right back, however, with two TD's and led at halftime 14-13. ln the second half, the walls caved in on Ravenna's pass defense as Timken's Hiben completed passes right and left. Although the Raven's forward wall limited the Troian's ground attack to almost nothing, the Cantonians came out on top 27-13. . Q I' Q 1' GIRARD ln the final game of the 52 season a top ranking team of the state handed the R eleven its third straight loss and fifth of the season. Girard's pass defense was the straw that broke the Raven's back as they downed the home- team 21-13. Both Ravenna tallies came on long runs. The first being a 57 yd. iaunt by Walt Livingston and the last score of the game and the season was Tom Gray's gallop in the third stanza. He went 62 yds. 41 CGACHING STAFF Seated, Dick Hoskin, Harry Gilcrest, Don Vance. Standing, Glenn Rutan, Harley Seiss, Art Fesemyer 97935223 6- FOOTB MANAGERS d Lam, Gxovinazzo Dick Hoskalgl. The seniors stepped to the footlights to present R. U. R. , an intriging play by Karel Capek. Our play takes place in the office of the factory of Rossum's Universal Robots. ln the first act, Helena Glory, portrayed by Rosemarie Audino, comes to appeal for the improvement of the conditions of the robots. Larry Bonham, as Harry Domin, captures her heart and hand in the speediest courtship ever recorded on our stage. The last two acts take place ten years later. Due to the desires of Helena, Dr. Gall. played by Bob Hutchison, has secretly humanized some of the robots. While there are only a few hundred such robots, there are enough to start a revolution. The rest of the play is a magnificent melodrama in which Mr. Fabry, Dr. Hal- lemeries, Mr. Alquist, and Counsel Busman, portrayed respectively by David Younk man, Roy Hoskin, Ernie Fullum and Jerry Smith, await their fate at the hands of their own robots. Then comes the epilogue, and Alquist finds he is the only human being left on earth. His life has been spared because the robots thought he could reconstruct the last formula for their reproduction. All his efforts seem in vain, and he fears that the earth is doomed for he knows that the robot's bodies will wear out in time and there will be no new multitudes to replace them. But, like all good stories, ours has a happy ending. In the final seconds Alquist discovers a robot, Dick Gast, and a robotess, Cecilia Mendiola, comparable to Adam and Eve. Others in the cast include: Dolores Reed as Nana, Burt Allen as Radius, a robot, and David Huffman, Allen Warner, Lawrence Giovinazzo, and Floyd Minor as ro- bots . 47 Secretary-Treasurer .... To get the ball rolling, a weiner roast was held soon after the club was organized. With a little entertain- ment under their belts, the members got down to work and started a get out the vote cam- paign. Hi-Y boys drove voters to and from the polls. Soon after election time, the annual Thanksgiving canned food drive was started. Over 700 cans of food were gathered and distributed through the county welfare agency to needy families. Toys, toys, and more toys were gathered by the boys so needy children could have a better Christmas. The final count showed that the boys gathered and repaired over l,00O toys. Two Red Cross packages were sent to Europe by the club. When the Muscular Dystrophy Association needed volunteers to help in their house-to- house canvass of the town, the Hi-Y came to their aid. The first Friday of each month was set aside as Hi-Y dress-up day, and all members were seen wearing suits. Raven fans outnumbered Kent fans at the Ravenna-Roosevelt football game mainly be- cause the Hi-Y sponsored a car caravan which consisted of over 50 cars. Each month the boys worked at the concession stands at the USO wrestling shows. Swim- ming and basketball rounded out the year's activities for a truly active Hi-Y. 51 4th row- L. Postlethwait, J. Salem - Victory number nine went into the record books as the Ravens started the new year off right with a 60 to 48 win over Salem. Deadly accuracy at the foul line again spelled the difference. Ashland - A full house was on hand to witness Ravenna's encounter with the high rated Ashland Arrows. After trailing most of the game the Ravens pulled out in front in the third quarter and led the rest of the way to regis- ter an impressive 58 to 51 victory. Kent Roosevelt - The smooth running Ravenna basketball machine registered their tenth straight victory and made it ll wins in I2 games by blasting arch-rival Kent Roose- velt 66 to 49. Taylor, Livingston, and Gray led the Raven scoring parade. Stow - Since the Ashland game, Ravenna has been re- ceiving state ratings. With this fine record to protect, the R five showed no mercy as they slaughtered Stow 77-44. The now experienced bench brigade played most of the last half to rest starters for the following night's game with Newton Falls. , Newton Falls - Flu, fouls, and tough breaks failed to stop the seemingly tired Ravens who edged the Tigers 62-59. The Falls crew led most of the game but tottered in the final minutes. Canton South - South and the officials snapped the Ra- vens' l2 game winning streak with a 65-58 upset. Canton Timken - Ravenna really proved that the South fracas was a freak as they downed highly rated Tim- ken 51 to 47. Gray, Kane, and Livingston combined forces to take scoring honors. Akron Hower - Nothing went right as the not-too-potent Howerites edged Ravenna 48 to 43. Taylor and Livings- ton garnered l3 points apiece. Kent Roosevelt - ln the final scheduled game of the sea- son arch-rival Roosevelt fell 56-47 to the R five. It was a hard played game and one of the best thrillers of the season . Bruce Anderson scored I3 points to grab scoring honors. Newton Falls - A little more poise and superiorfoul shoot- ing meantthe difference as the Ravens nipped the Tigers 62-58. Dick Taylor bagged 2l points to lead Ravenna scoring . Akron Garfield - Old Father Time caught up with the Ravens as they staged a thrilling last half comeback. Behind 24 to 38 at the half, only time could have stopped the fighting Ravens who lost a heartbreaker 69-70. Akron East - The R five came back into the win col- umn as they bested the Orientals 60 to 53. East almost caught the Vancemen in the third quarter, but swishing long shots by Taylor, who hit for 2l points, kept the ' team ahead . - With center Bruce Anderson leading the way, an outclassed Stow team fell 7-l-44 to the rampaging Ravens. Coach Vance used the bench brigade for the first time and the anxious bench warmers poured it on in the final quarter. Louisville - The more they play the better they get would best sum up the Louisville game. After shellacking Stow on Friday, the Ravens came back on Saturday and shattered the school scoring record as they blasted the Leopards 80-45. Kent State - Everybody got into the act as the Vancemen K O'd Kent State 75-45. A well-rounded scoring attack was headed by Anderson, Taylor, Kane, and Gray all of whom hit double numbers. Alumni - This year's Alumni game was almost a carbon copy of last year's contest. The grads were hot, but a little rusty and they fell to the varsity 6l to 59. Er - ln the initial game of the Roosevelt holiday tour- nament, slow starting Vancemen downed the stubborn Stow aggregation 58-4l . The win entitled Ravenna to meet Kent Roosevelt for the championship and the trophy. Kent Roosevelt - The '52-'53 Ravenna quintet won the first trophy and the tournament championship with a 52- 4l victory over host Kent Roosevelt. Alice Hull and John Hamilton shared the leads as Marge and Herbert Gage who decided to get away from hectic city life by moving to the country. The peace and quiet of the country provided the worry ridden father with an opportunity to finish writing his book. The 200 year old farmhouse, badly in need of repair, gave Marge, a lover of an- tiques, a chance to redecorate it in fine colonial style. Living in the country gave Margaret Delano as tomboy Paula, a chance to run loose. Mariorie Monroe, as Sarah, could now be near the horses she loved so well . Where they lived made no difference to Barbara, Mary Lou Rickert, who existed on her love for her fiance, George Husted, Fred Yontz. Shirley Walker and Bob Easter were the Rockwoods, the former occupants of the Connecticut farm- house and the dating parents of Matt, Randy King. Bob Rice portrayed Uncle Walter, the newscarrier of the countryside. Frieda, the maid, came to life when enacted by Judy Beal. Joe Giulitto was Loomis, the Gage lawyer. Ted Ziemba played Carson, the constable, while Bob Adams was his assistant. R. Richard Banker directed the play. Mrs. C. R. Francies, iunior class adviser, worked with the production staff.
