HE Board of Education is the organization that formulates school policies, initiates school programs and makes the necessary improvements through- out the Ravenna school system. One of this year's main projects is the build- ing of the new Chestnut district grade school. The members of the board are elected every three years. They are E. G. Willyard, presidentg Mrs. Gertrude Cunningham, vice-president, Dr. I. C. Beal, Dr. C. L. Naylor and I. B. Yoder. Miss Mary Moncey is the clerk. Mr. Willyard, representing the group says, It is the earnest desire of the school board to provide the finest opportunities possible to the students of Ravenna schools for an education to help them become good citizens. MISS MARY MONCEY MRS. ANN WORDEN, a who is a graduate of graduate of Miami Uni- Ravenna high and Bo- versity, has completed hecker's Business Col- her first year as secre- lege, serves as Superin- tary to Principal Wayne tendent Brown's secre- E. Watters. tary. 8 IK GCI HIS year, the uncertainties of the future have taken on unusual significance for the young people of our community and nation. They are compelled by circumstances beyond their control to view the future with more than usual apprehension. The happy events of the past year recorded here in picture and story are viewed more soberly by young people as they contemplate their places in a world of unrest and turmoil. Today our youth are asked to place service to their country ahead of service to themselves. This means that normal careers such as high- er education, business, and establishment of homes may have to wait until the present gen- eration of young people take time out of their lives again to defend our American Way of Life . It is the fervent hope of all of us whose lives have been spent with yotmg people that another world war can still be averted, so that our youth once again can live normal, peaceful and happy lives. ' This message is given by H. L. Brown, Superintendent of Ravenna Schools. Mr. Brown has a bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Union and a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University. DUCATION is, without doubt, the most ex- I citing and at the same time most gratifying of the creative arts. Its raw material is the mind of youth, its formula is the wisdom of the ages, and its product, the citizens of our dem- ocrac . Is it any wonder that one thrills to the y ii title of educator? These views on education are expressed by Wayne E. Watters who is the principal at Ra- venna High School. Mr. Watters has a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree from Hiram College and Kent State University. 9 FSQQES df- , i f .gr ....., ,If 'fag' w g .. L QQ M : .L jg. fx y ff Q?. I didn't have anything special planned for a vacation this summer C196lJ so I visited my old classmates. I found Janet Bender, Alice St. Clair, and Diana Chiappone working in New York. The girls are doing a fine job of designing the latest fashions. Janet read a letter from Ann Miles telling about her job as a fashion illustrator. Ann is working at the MGM studio in Holly- wood. It was a pleasant surprise to find Pat Anderson and Nancy Jones teaching in some of Ohio's best elementary schools. Also, after receiving her degree, Marjorie Stewart was hired to succeed her father as principal at West Main. Others who have made good in the education- al field are Barbara Bankson and Mary Lou Hartle who have the task of teaching girl's physical education. When I talked to these girls they said that Joe Meduri is head football coach at Ohio State. John Mascio is coaching basketball at the same place. According to Betty Mansfield, secretary to Dr. Bud Rice, Helen Rudd, Ianet Schwenk, and Theresa Damicone have excellent jobs in prominent Ravenna business establishments. Lois Collier has taken over Miss Green's job as school nurse. As superintendent of nurses at Robinson Memorial, Pat Rupert is doing a fine job. Rose Sarrocco, Iune Gill and Suz- zanne Klein have been accepted as efficient nurses at the same place. The hospital's ex- cellent meals are planned by head dietitians Betty Postlewait and Carol Bassett. Ted Gray is editor of The Evening Record. Walt Serafin, Frances Nagella, and Ray Coia, have helped him to succeed in having the best possible newspaper. Ted doesn't have to worry about the financial arrangements for the paper because Virginia Kohl, Betty Rose Cline, and Nancy Delin are taking care of that. Betty has recently been honorably dis- charged from the Spars. Larry Harper, Kenny Wolff, Wayne Short, Mike Bica, and Bob Hull have formed their own band. They play for all the important dances and I've heard that they are very sweet and mellow. By the way, Wayne's playing is only a sidelight. If you are planning a new home, hire him as the architect. He's tops. Dorothy Roppel, Valerie Ward, and Bob Kauffman are the stars of a new hit being di- rected by Donna Ridenour. Don't miss it. Tony Filomena is the new manager of Schine's theater, Dave Borden, jim Cartwright, and Jim Ensinger have jobs under him. That new team of midget auto racers about which we've heard so much belongs to Warren Nelman. When I stopped in the A Ka P market managed by Way Anderson, I met housewife Eleanor 28 Westfall doing her shopping. Eleanor told me that the best milkman around here is Deryl Porter. lim Mahan has his own service station. Hall Baker, Gerald Boggs and Al Brode are his best mechanics. Lois Fulweber and Norma Clark are teaching in Nancy Knapp's new business scnool. Mari- lyn Schlauch has opened a similar business in Akron. Ellen Hoff has made Ravenna her home since her marriage. Once in a while she sees Pat Garro and joe Miniscalco who are athletic instructors in our dear alma mater . Dick Collette is in business for himself now. Janice Cope and Donna Dix are his secretaries. Warren Thomas, Don Shutiok, and Ned Underhill and jack Vacarro have completed their graduate courses in the field of science. They are planning peacetime uses for atomic energy Marlene DeAngel and Gloria Fullum have passed civil service examinations and are working in their laboratories as secretaries. Bill Hughes, Bob Iverson, and Roger Smith left for the wild west. We've heard that Bill will star in a new movie. Phyllis Eikleberry is Mr. Watters new secretary. The job has become so pressing that Donna Kissel has been hired to help out. By the way, Matt Schugar and Charlie Maimone were re- elected to the Board of Education in the last election. Erla Jean Lewis and Suzanne Miller are traveling throughout the United States to observe organizations of the Rainbow Girls. When they were in the western states they saw Bunny Portale and Dave Papiska who are looking for gold. Doug Peters is a big shot in the Isaly Dairy now. He serves special meals when the class of '51 visits him. ' . Ray Neiswanger, Gary Postlewait, Keith Kruger, and Dick Prisby are working in Ravemia. When I talked to Dick I learned that he was going to see the Kent State basketball team per- form. The team has won several championships due to the coaching of Ronnie Stefanisc and Wayne Paris. Leon Proctor and John Watt have gone to Europe. Leon is studying music and John is an exchange French teacher. Frank Bosko has gone back to Cuba to encourage more friendly relations between the countries. Paul Iaqua is opening a new factory. Ronnie Burt and Jerry Spinelli are in charge of two of the departments. Ruth Weisenberger has been accepted by Phil Spitalny as a member of his all girl orches- tra. I learned from some of the girls that Mary Karaffa, Mary Prusak, and Elisa Tambur- rino are employed by the F. B. I. Pat Whittam is also in government work. When I heard that Betty Trivelli had made the Air Force Cadets, I had accounted for all my classmates except for one. I found her when I visited Florida. Cleon Wilson is resting there until her next modeling contract is signed. As you can see the class of '51 has spread out and grown ten years older. 29 . 7 , President -- Carol Bassett Q Vice-President -- Warren Thomas Y Secretary -- Erla lean Lewis .J Q Treasurer -- Betty Trivelli QC' M 4 a 'Y K Class Motto -- Give to the world the best ' JJ you have and the best will come back to you. Early in the game the Ravens' drive of 75 yards was climaxed bv Pat Garro's plunge for the first score of the year. Ronnie Stefansic grabbed Miniscalco's pass for the second TD, and Miniscalco raced 11 yards for the third. Captain Ioe Meduri bulled his way through the line for the fourth six pointer, with Miniscalco adding the extra point. RAVENS 13 - SALEM 14 We'1l call this one the heartbreakers of the year. Trailing 10-0, going into the second half, the Salem Quakers bounced back behind the brilliant passing of quarterback Iim Callahan to score two TD's and wrap up the ball game. Garro and Meduri scored the six pointers, and Miniscalco booted the extra point for the Ravens. RAVENS 6 - BOARDMAN 20 Pat Garro kept up his touchdown-per-game average as he scored in the first three minutes. However the Youngstown eleven caught fire and scored three quick TD's to sew up the game. RAVENS 13 - CANTON CATHOLIC 20 The Ravens jumped off to a fast start by scoring early in the first quarter when Garro scored from 18 yards out. Melvin Pump, fleet-footed sophomore, thrilled the vast crowd in the late stages of the game with a 53 yard TD run off tackle. Deryl Porter snared the pass for the extra point. RAVENS 26 - ROOSEVELT 7 Garro gained 157 yards and averaged 14.3 per carry as he led the Ravens to a 26-7 victory over arch rival Kent Roosevelt. Pat scored three touchdowns, one on a 78 yard gallop right up the middle. His third was a plunge from the six yard stripe. Miniscalco scored the other TD on a 25 yard pass from Meduri, Mini also kicked the two extra points. RAVENS 6 - NEWTON FALLS 12 This was the game in which more players were laid out than during a boxing mara- thon. Late in the fourth quarter, Garro bulled his way over from the two for the Ravens' TD. Because Miniscalco had been injured, captain Joe Meduri elected to run for the ex- tra point and was stopped just short of the goal line. RAVENS 0 - CUYAHOGA FALLS 28 There was too much of the Falls' Glen Buss in this one. In a driving rain storm he swam for three TD's and floated four extra points over the crossbars to grace his team to a 28-0 victory. Meduri reeled off most of the Ravens' total yardage of 8 . RAVENS '1 - coLUMBUs NORTH zo This one will have to take a back seat to the Salem game. Leading 7-0 with five minutes to play, Columbus blocked a kick attempted by Tom Gray and turned it into a safety The blow was fatal to the Ravens for they couldn't get together after it. Columbus went ahead to score four TD's in two minutes to kill the Ravens' chances of a big upset. Ioe Meduri scored all of the Ravens' points and played the best game of his great career. RAVENS 13 - GIRARD 12 In what may have been Coach Harrg Gilcrest's final coaching effort at RHS, the Ra- vens came through with an amazing 13-1 upset of the Girard Redmen. Garro scored two TD's to bring his seasons total to ten. However the two standout players of the night were Ioe Miniscalco who scored the all-important extra point, after being hit hard twice, and Dave Younkman who blocked an attempted Girard extra point. 78 ' cha ze J LAYERS end up with'the credit, but endless hours are put in by the I 'W coaching staff in turning out the teams at RHS. From August 20 until the gi? end of the season, Mr. Gilcrest, Mr. Vance, and Mr. Hoskin toil out on the gridiron along with the players, plus their nightly skull sessions. ' ' ' i Immediately after the grid season is over, Vance and Hoskin start con- centrating on basketball. The court season is about a month longer than WX ' football, and of course twice as many games are played. When the basketball uniforms go into mothballs, Gilcrest takes over the position as' head track coach, which lasts until the end of the year. The men who get no break at all are Mr. Montecalvo and Mr. Seiss. Monte- calvo is the faculty manager and must make out entry sheets for every event ,f the Ravens plan to enter in any sport. His work is endless, and takes up h all his extra time. Seiss is the eighth grade football coach, takes the V -1 movies of the football games, is the official scorekeeper for basketball, .gang and is a timer for track meet. L Q .. Filling his shoes will be quite a job. Gerald Boggs--This rough defensive center's football career goes back a long way. Ge- rald first donned a Raven outfit when he was a spry eighth grader and has been knocking 'em down for RHS ever since. Al Brode--The injury jinx could never seem to stay away from Al. He was injured every yqeag he was out, but injuries didn't keep him from coming into his own in the Columbus o . Ray Coia--Ray was the main sparkplug of the steamroller line. His fire and intestinal fortitude may never be equalled at RHS. Pat Garro- -This agile right halfback was the cylinder of the squad as his drive pumped out ten TD's to lead the team to its victories. Bob Iverson-- Hard to move, but quick to think, suitably fits this huge tackle. Bob was a defensive specialist and was in on almost every play. Charles Maimone--Charlie enjoyed his greatest year in 1950 as he played fine offensive and terrific defensive football. He is a big boy and he'll be tough to replace come next fall. F Joe Medllri, captain--joltin' joe was the brakes on the squad, and he often applied '? them as opponents were stopped time and again, short of a gain. If he takes advan- tage of it. a great future lies ahead for him on the gridiron. iv' Q joe Miniscalco--Mini, although injured in mid-season, was the carburetor of the ' team as his knife-like thrusts through the line thrilled many a crowd. 0 A ,fi . Carl Portale-- Bunny, took charge of keeping the team in high spirits when the going was tough. A fine blocker, his spark will be missed next fall. N Deryl Porter--Tough in the clutch, Deryl played an old type of rock-em, sock-em football. He will be another tough one to replace. Richard Prisby-- Rich was the overshadowed man on the team, but kept putting out and finally showed himself in the Columbus North clash. Ed Rice-- Bud was the offensive mainstay in the middle of the line and paired up with Meduri to give the Ravens two vicious linebackers. Ronnie Stefansic--Wearing number 47 and playing his fourth year of gridiron war for the Ravens was the 6' 1' ' rugged tackler. Ron was an outstanding defensive end. Ned Underhill--Although this was only Ned's second year of football for the RHS men, he played his guard position like a seasoned veteran when the opportunity came. A good, clean cut ballplayer, you won't find many more like him. Jack Vaccaro--Tough luck had plagued jack since his junior year when he tore a ligament in his leg. However, it wasn't enough to keep him out of action, and he proved to be a main clog in a well-oiled machine. s C' g? V as mlm Mu 80 XX A 3, B E .
