sr. J, . DIARY OF AN R. H. S. GRADUATE JUNE 12, 1942 Well, diary, I've had a pretty full day, I'm going to confide to you all the exciting events that have happened. First of all, I went to my office as usual. What do you think happened after a very few minutes? In popped an old acquaintance, Nick Carter! We had a fine chat about the good old days at R. H. S. I fired an avalanche of questions at him, and asked him among other things, if he remembered the time Grace Madge Essig stepped on his hand so hard in the Junior class play of '29. He replied that he certainly did! Did he know what Grace Madge was doing now, and where she was living? He informed me that she was married and had a home in Akron. I asked Nick what he himself was doing to which he replied that he was editing a newspaper in Ravenna. Ravenna, he continued, was avery populous and flourishing town. Edgar, Doc , Knowlton had his headquarters there and was quite famed as a M. D. Mary Jane Fairchild was a doctor, too: she was p1'acticing in Arizona. Thomas Mariana was running a first class restaurant, and was making a tidy sum for Emma and himself. There was a new contracting firm somewhere in Pennsylvania, and the person who head- ed the company, Howard told me, was none other than James McLendon, Jr. Well, I said, 'Td like to see Ravenna again. Tell me about some of the rest of the class of '30. Nick continued: Cha1'les Hagerty had made a reputation for himself as a chemist -I remembered then of having seen an account of his discovering a new element. Jamile Farres was the manager of a new dance hall at Sandy Lake and was doing well with it. What about Belva Fisher? Nick told me she had followed up her desire to become a kindergarten teacher and was teaching a class of little children in Kent. It was rumor- ed, however, that she was to be married soon. Phyllis Childs was also teaching kinder- garten. Jeanette Rosenthal was teaching dramatics at Clearwater, Florida, and was mak- ing real actors of the pupils there. Dolcie Murphy was teaching French in some high school in New York, and a very good teacher she was, from all reports. Janet Jones was a popular song writer, she had written several big hits. Loduska Matthews was a buyer for some big store in Cleveland. James Fitzgerald was a foreign language professor at Kent State College. Swinton Swanee Matthews was also a teacherg he was teaching high school history at Hiram. Willard Dickinson was a salesman for the Hudson Motor Car Companyg Marie Coates was a nurse in a Cleveland hospital. Then, there was Robert Jones, who had just been sent to South America to do busi- ness for a fruit company. Bob had made his headquarters in Ravenna, and was married. Hilda Severance was traveling in Europe. Robert Johns had gone to California a few months ago, as a member of the same fruit company. John Nestor, Nick continued, was an airplane pilot, he flew a mail plane. Austin Fall was manager of an airport at Man- tua. Charles Moncey owned a chain of drug stores in Cleveland, by the way he was married to Zeta Welsher. Eugene Ruckman was one of the chief officials of a new bus company that had a route between Warren and Akron. Morris Lotte was connected with the air-way division of the same company, and both were making names for themselves. William Whitey Damicon was coaching at a Junior High School in Cleveland, and his team had won every football game they had played. Dominic Corsino was the sports editor for the paper Howard published. Ralph Vigluicci was an export officerg Peter Cipriano was a televis- ion radio announcer, Frank Di1'odis was an athletic coach at Ohio State University, and called Rockne the Second. - Howard said all the rest of the boys from our class had moved farther away, so he didn't know what they were doing now. Therefore, he proceeded to tell me the news of many of the girls from the class of '30. Evelyn Balo was a secretary for one of the prominent lawyers in town, Georgia Prichard. Arline Pfeil was recuperating from injuries received in a wreck when her mil- lionaire husband steered his car off an embankment. Loretta Elson was a swimming in- structor, Lillian Dietrich had just set a new endurance record in flying. Martha Krieble had married a vaudeville actor but wasn't satisfied with her choice, consequently, she was suing for divorce. Winifred LeRoy was married to a minister, while Margaret Mc- ' . -. .----ff 1 4192- I rw- w .. rl H Un .D ww bw,,,::.,,g,:,:,g2-.I-Jr, -9,-,,.
