Ranger’s History The USS Ranger (CVA 61) is the eighth U S Navy ship to bear that name The first Ranger built in 1777. was a Continental Frigate with 18 guns She sailed for France in late 1 777. with 140 men under the command of Captain John Paul Jones who. on February 14 1778 negotiated with the French the first salute to the American Flag It was the first official recognition of the American repubhc by a foreign power Ranger harrassed British shipping and defeated HMS Drake. 20 guns, off Belfast.
