estraint lt's all right here in a vertical city on hills, reaching down to touch the su- pine bay. A unique bit of serendipitv containing opera and topless, cultural and crude, Nob Hill and l5c ham- burgers. lts people are radical, reac- tionary, conservative, rniddle-0f-the- road, and left wing. The architecture is as varied and distinct as San Fran- cisco's inhabitants. Cf s e F ,v E l f KX I f 1 ' L f and Freedom

K Things Unchanging schwartz if T xp E I' v . zula ss, l if t t, 7 Ultra-modern skyscrapers in the center of town contrast wildly with the ornate dignity of China- town and haughty aloofness of quaint apartment buildings constructed in the early T900's. Trans- portation also reflects the conflict of time periods. Brightly painted trolleys still toil over the roller coaster streets of San Francisco, while the Bay Area Rapid Transit System shortens the time in- volved in getting from point A to B. As early as T859 the singularity of California was apparent. Richard Henry Dana opined that tear that the customs of California are free. And so they are. A stroll through -Xquatic Park, coffee in Ghirardelli Sqtiare, a surreptitious peek at the Haight-Ashbury natives all reveal the do your thingn attitude prevalent in the Bay Area.
