USS RANGER 1917-1919 A chart of the world shows the Pacific Ocean to be a watery abyss where east and west boundaries are separated by one third of the world's circumference. This expanse of water is both barrier and highway to man as he seeks to move about on the surface of our planet. For Ranger, the Pacific is a home and a place of business. Ranger courses this ocean exploiting the surface as an omni-directional highway. Periodically Ranger's duty takes her to the waters of the Far East where, to preserve order, to uphold the rights of man, to defend a just peace, there are stern responsibilities to be honored. Ranger is the largest aircraft carrier and greatest warship the nation has been able to muster to this cause. We of Ranger are keenly aware of our responsibility to make certain that both Ranger and her mission prosper. This book is the story of how Ranger did her cruise duty in a period she was in our hands. May z't bring proud and happy memories to the Ranger man who reads and relives the story in these pages. For those friends who followed the cruise from afar, may these pages bring to life the events and may they convey the pride and esprit of a crew of nearly four thousand Airmen, Sailors, and Marines who can say- we were Ranger's. W. N. LEONARD
